The Golf Thread

A good friend of mine who is on th PGA Tour *cough name dropping cough* Eric Axley recommend the Nickcent hybrids if were to switch my 2 & 3 iron to hybrids.

i worked part time in a pro shop to help pay bills in grad school the last two years and my boss had a website he could log into that had pics of players bags on the range and on the first tee and we saw them everywhere. Even began carrying the hybrids and they sold quite well. Hit them in the simulator and they were smooth.

I am going to Demo Day and will give any brand a try. I was looking for opinions from anyone that plays blades on this board.
forget frickin' opinions. If you can demo them, go with the club that fits your eye and provides the ball flight you seek, blade or otherwise.

If you have carte blanche, go in with eyes open to anything, but focus on setup, flight path, and shafts. People spend a lot of time hung up on brands and looks in the bag. That's absurd.

Mind you, I hit a set of MacGregor VIP "Nicklaus '62" retro look blades. Got there by hitting all of them and liked this setup best because it fits my eye and the shafts in them produce mid trajectory.

If I were buying blades right now, I'd choose between several of the Mizuno's (it's what I grew up on), Hogan Apex (prettiest club in golf) or the Taylor Made TP muscleback's with the vibration absorbing notches carved out.

I hear great things about the MP-32 "cut muscle".

Do you have a good reason to move to blades? I stick with 'em because of the aesthetics and I hit enough balls to keep hitting them solid. That said, there are several players cavity backs that I'm going to look at because they have removed the offset and thinned out the toplines. Setup looks like a blade and forged metals, but the forgiveness and higher trajectory long irons have to help everyone.
I played with a set of Nike Forged Blades and loved the way they looked, responded and how I hit the ball. I am a little longer with the blades 2 iron blade 235+ / 2 iron X-16 220+ and just feel it is time for new irons.

I am partial to Callaway because I have played the for so long, but I am completely open to an club that I can a) hit for distance b). work the ball any way needed and c). produces the ball flights I need.

You do your thing, but I love that I can pull by hybrid 2 when I've gotta carry some water or bunker rather than the little butter knife I used to get out. I can miss that thing and still hit a high respectable shot. Missed blade, not so much.

I tried to hit a 2 hybrid and failed terribly. I don't know what it is I just can't hit a hybrid.

so with this thread heating up this past week and the weather getting above 50 here, i made a trip to the driving range.

Results were far better than expected which I think is a bad thing. It means a trip to the actual course is on tap soon. However, I must work with my wedges a little more. I'm afraid chipping might be a nightmare.

chipped and putted for about 2 hours on Sunday. sold on the new putter. chipping was atrocious. my touch looked like Chism from 20'

so sorry to butt in here guys but just wondering on some suggestions for courses in Knoxville since I'm here now, preferably on a college student's budget thanks.

In college I really liked Lambert Acres out in Maryville. One, it is cheap and two, they don't take tee times so could just go whenever I had some free time without planning for it. Also, it is a 27 hole course, so there is more variety.

have to play it back a bit and hit down on it like a 7 iron.
I think playing it too far forward and trying to sweep it like a fairway wood is the most common mistake people make with hybrids. I fought a hybrid hook for months before it finally dawned on me to just back the ball up in my stance. :banghead2:

my problem with hybrids (and I think i may have already brought this up) is that I hit the stupid things too far. Sounds odd I know, but I hit a typical 3 iron 205-210. I hit a hybrid 3 230. I hit my 17 Degree fairway wood 235. the hybrid eliminates my need for a fairway wood but it leaves me with a gap from 195-225 if I don't have a standard 3 and 4 iron.

So get a 15 degree 3 wood and stick a steel shaft in the hybrid.

So get a 15 degree 3 wood and either shorten the shaft or go from graphite to steel in the hybrid to slow the clubhead down.

I've thought about that. But I like the current distances of my clubs. I hit the 17 degree very well. It's an old school Adams Tight Lies with a steel shaft. I have a callaway steelhead plus 3 wood that I can crush, but i'm not consistent with so it typically stays in the trunk and allows me to play 3 wedges. I also am pretty consistent with my 3 and 4 iron when I play on a regular basis. The way I look at it, my bag currently has a club for every distance that I should even be considering going for the green on. If I don't have a club that'll go 250, I won't be stupid enough to try for the green when that situation comes to pass.

I play the MP 32's and love them.

If your going to demo, try the Mizuno 57's and MP 60's.
The 60's are a have a little more cavity back, than the 32's and 57's.

Good luck with them

2 words - Ben Hogan

I play the Apex Edge Pro Series irons, I personally haven't found anything else better for me or my game but everybody is different.

What's up guys. I had no idea there was even a golf thread, much less a Sports Forum. In the past I have really only checked the Vols Forum and the Recruiting Forum. I went to school at UT and played all around there, I'm now back in Memphis and thus play pretty much all around this area. Not sure if newbies list their gear/stats but I'll give mine. I play Titleist 650MB blades, Nike wedges(52, 56, 60), Cleveland Launcher (8deg) driver and Launcher 3 wood, Odyssey White Hot putter, and I'm a 6 handicap.

welcome. the golf thread is a pretty good spot for the majority of the golf season. there are a few gear junkies in here who'll talk a lot of equipment. Unfortunately, I'm one of them. Bear with me.
