The Golf Thread

a few times right after grad school. buddy has an uncle that lives on the course so we rolled down and played for a week, nearly gratis.

great place and well done, but didn't like the course much. Has a very tricked up, gimmicky sort of feel. that was several years ago and I'm sure the changes since then have helped. One of the most difficult courses I've ever been on.

I agree 100%. From the pot bunkers to the cross ties to waste areas sloping into water hazards to the artificial mounding, in a lot of places it feels like something some 12 year old designed on his computer.

...but I did finish 4-3-3, so I thought it was great.

3 on 18 is pretty salty.

The drive on 18 is flat out scary with that lake up the left side. I killed one up the left side and then fanned one high and right into the stadium mounds but got a perfect lie for the pitch shot and lucked up and holed out from the moguls.

As far as tour courses go, Harbour Town is a fun one to play. I also enjoyed Waikoloa GC in Hawaii. The course wasn't very memorable, but it's cool to read putts based on where the ocean is vs where the snow capped volcano is.

it was much prettier before the description, but those are the ones that stick out the most.

the moguls on that place give it a very lame feel. The course argues that it is akin to stadium seating, but I'm not buying it. It tricks it up and further punishes errant drives.

The biggest letdown to me was 17. I know the tournament adds a ton of pressure, but the shot just wasn't that hard. The green is bigger than I thought. It was 9 iron to the middle . . . 2 putts . . . take a picture or two . . . yawn . . . go to the next tee.

Agreed. we did play one day with a pretty good breeze and had I not hit 3rd (following a sweet little double on 16), I would have flown the thing. Other days it was a par 3 with a wedge or 9. It is a pretty nasty green. You could see some pins that you definitely don't want to be putting to.

I need you guys' connections. The only TPC course I've played is Southwind here in Memphis. It was not exactly a memorable experience since it was 100 plus outside and I had to carry my bag due to it being a tournament. trying to set up a "work trip" to Starkville so I can join a customer at Old Waverly, but that's about as close as I'll come to playing a "big time" course in the near future.

you're gonna love Old Waverly, unless you play late June - Sept.

I went to the sunday players as well and was surprised at how big the green was....of course it would be pretty difficult with all the fans there....that place was packed.

those guys are accustomed to the fans. Adrenaline might get the best of a few of them, but most are prepared for it. I'd say the ramifications on their tourney and the wind are the biggest factors.

way to go
ruin it for those of us that's not played it :)

when you see it on TV it's made out to be a mythical experience

ugh, I played 27 holes several days this summer walking in tallahassee...that's a great loss plan if anyone is interested in dropping about 5 pounds in one day.

eh, I live in Memphis and play alot during the summer. I'm used to it. You just gotta have an extra glove and a towel.
good. then you can drive to the course, because it's in the middle of nowhere. In fact, they told me that the majority of their members are absentee memberships owned by folks in Memphis and Birmingham.

Yep it really is like a golf oasis in the middle of a bunch of crop fields. We have a customer that is in Starkville which is a few min away from there, and luckily they play golf and are members there.

Wow. I drove by my home course over lunch, and there is severe tree damage everywhere from last night's storms.

I hate to see 100 years worth of growth wiped out over night, but if mother nature is going to do some rearranging, I hope she got the one on the left side of the fairway on #10. I've been convinced for some time now that it had some sort of large cosmic magnet that attracted ballata.

Maybe this is nature's way of helping me improve my handicap.

What is your home course? There was a course here in Memphis that had a tree on it and I used to swear the same thing about it. Luckily they redesigned the course and that included moving the fairway so that the tree was out of play. Although now that I'm older/stronger it is one of those holes that the fairway isn't exactly in play.

i'm sure that if it fixed that hole then the golf gods will get you on another :)

What is your home course?

Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.

#10 is about a 440 yard par 4 with a gentle dogleg left, and the green is severely downhill from the middle of the fairway. There are woods on the right and one lone, humongous tree on the left at about the 200. The hole screams for a draw down the right side that takes the dogleg then plays down the slope of the hill to the green.

A straight drive down the middle will go through the fairway into trouble. A straight drive down the left gets eaten by the tree. The hole doesn't fit my eye or my game, so I usually play it by aiming down the right side, pulling it into the tree, and complaining.

The worst news is that it is the #18 handicap for women, as the teebox is almost even with that d@#%ed tree on the right side, so while I'm usually laying 3 and chipping, my playing partner is generally laying 1 on the fringe.

but as I recall, you're getting strokes from her. does that help?

We are engaged, so I'm not sure how long that will last. I've heard that things change after the exchange of vows.

And actually, I don't always get strokes. She is free to back up and play even from the blues on any hole she chooses:)
