The Golf Thread

Ordered a Bombtech Grenade, will be in tomorrow (of course it's going to snow all weekend after a week in the 50's)

My buddy has their 3 wood and i like it, and after talking to a fee guys who have one I decided why the hell not.

Regripped everything to Golf Pride CP2 Tour Wrap then went beast mode playing with them for the first time yesterday. It was like I had brand new clubs. I'm an idiot for not regripping sooner.

I'm a Lamkin crossline loyalist. I'm on the border between standard and mid, regripping to midsize was the best move ever for me, so much more feel.

Also, my driver came today, naturally we got 5" of snow with the possibility of a foot Tuesday.

Been a Golf Pride Tour Velvet guy for a long time, but the irons I bought have Wynn Dry Tacks. So, 5 through gap have Wynn's, and the woods, hybrids, and sand wedge have Tour Velvets.

What wedges do you play?

I (dodges rocks) bought a set of Gigagolf irons because I wasn't planning on playing much. Love the hell out of them, more than the G5's i sold when I was getting divorced.

The wedges seem clunky to me though, and as that's all I can practice at home (have a range membership but sometimes I just want to hit in shorts and flip flops) I'm leaning towards that as my new toy.

I absolutely hate Dynamic Gold iron shafts, and that is what is in most wedges. So, I carry the Mizuno Gap Wedge (JPX 825 Pro) that matches my irons, and I made a sand wedge. It is a old Dynacraft 56 degree with some bounce ground off the heel side. It looks about like any blade style wedge (like a Vokey or Cleveland). I have a somewhat heavier graphite shaft that is an old UST brand.

Since I have gotten older, I went to all graphite shafts, but most graphite shafts seem too light to me around the green, and the Dynamic is too stiff and heavy. I don't carry a lob wedge.

I started playing in the mid-1960's when there was no such thing, and learned to play shots with other wedges. My problem with a lob wedge is that I can't seem to get the ball to the hole. I think that for every shot I may save, I may lose another somewhere else.

Another thing about irons.....the brand isn't that important to me. I seem to hit them all about the same, unless the shafts are too stiff, or they have a big difference in offset, or a wide sole. I am not name conscious. I played my last set for 14 years. I have played with whole sets that I have made. I have bought $7 iron heads, $6 shafts, and $2 grips, glued them together, and shot low 70's.

I know the feeling. I came along in the 80s right as the lob wedge started being used, but like you, I learned to pitch everything with the SW or PW. The hardest thing for me to overcome is the urge to try and create loft by opening up a lob wedge. I used to watch Dave Pelz teach that robotic approach to controlling pitch shots and think he was nuts.

My hands would measure for standard probably, but I went to midsize just to try it out and it really seems to have relaxed my grip. One thing I didn't expect is how much more feel I seem to have around the green.

I do the same thing with a lob wedge (open up the face to add loft). I can't seem to overcome the urge, so I took it out of the bag.

Titleist Vokey 50/10, 56/8, 60/7.
Does your 56 have a wide sole? That seems like low bounce for a narrow sole sand wedge, if you have fluffy sand and heavy rough.

Of course, you may have a shallow angle of attack that won't lay the sod over it, or dig too deep in fluffy sand..

I never use a sand wedge in the sand anymore and the course I play is notorious for tight lies around the green, so I'm all about low bounce.

That's what I figured with your wedge selection. We have some fluffy, lush grass around the greens and heavy sand.

You use the 50 or 60 out of the sand, or both? I have hit many different clubs out of the sand, especially if I am a long way from the pin with a lot of green.

I like to just use the 60 and control the sand depth with the sole of the club. Back in the day, I just threw it up in the air all the times spun it. Now, I'm more of a chunk and run guy.

Me too. I hit a fair distance behind it, and let it run. I don't have the guts to try to nip it close to the ball.

I learned how to play the sand while living on the beach in Connecticut in the early 1970's. I used to have a tendency to pick it clean, and hit it a mile, back when I was young. I went to my back yard (the beach), and practiced hitting toward the ocean. if I picked it clean, it was in the water.

I use 56 almost exclusively out of sand. Same issue as GA around the greens here, so I have low bounce in the 56 and 60. Regular bounce in the 52 just in case I'm in a lush spot, but I've learned to just work it more with the 56 to make it spin
