The Golf Thread

Think it’s 43 with a cart on Friday Saturday and Sunday. That and some balls on the range ends up 49 for me each time I’ve been this year. If you can get over there on a Tuesday it’s like 29

Tennis isn't a whole heck of a lot easier, and it's harder to play when you get old.

Tennis was always a pretty good workout when I played someone around my skill level, which wasn't all that great. But when I would play someone who was even just a little bit better, it was a slaughter. Plus I never got the backhand down very well.

And yeah it sucks as you get older, especially if you have bad knees.

I grew up playing lot of tennis, even some tourneys. It’s the one sport I can’t dial down. I can goof off with softball, football or basketball, even badminton, volleyball, etc, but tennis it never fails I go on the attack while I play. Had a few dates that wanted to play and it always wound up awkward.

Has to be less frustrating. Golf gives you too much time to think.

It kind of is, because out of the gate you have to be in at least decent cardio shape to play tennis. If you aren't, you already know you're going to suck.

But parts of tennis I found to be almost as frustrating, like the mentioned backhand. I would either hit it way too long, and then the next time I would take too much off of it and hit the net.

Has some similar satisfying moments though; I would say hitting a good return that paints the line was on the same level of hitting a great chip shot or putt.

Got a BirdieBall green for the house today. It’s pretty nice got a 3x10 with the contour shims as well.

You hit a great return that your opponent somehow gets to. Or not only gets to, returns with spin and suddenly you’re on defense just trying to stay alive, despite doing everything right. Tennis can be VERY frustrating.

The parts you mention are why I can’t go easy playing tennis.

I’m physically stronger now than I was a decade ago (thanks Army). My iron distances are still the same, my driver and 3 wood distance is up (but I credit club technology instead of me). All that to say a decade ago 100 yards was a perfect SW. Now, as mentioned, I have to muscle into it for 100 yards. I don’t get it

So update: a decade ago I was almost exclusively playing in East TN. Up in the mountains. My duty stations have all been at or near sea level. Played for the third time since coming home today. My sand wedge is back to 100 yards and my irons are prolly 5-8 yards further than sea level normal. I think it’s more an elevation thing than anything.

I hadn't thought of the elevation difference. I play near Tri-Cities and just got back today from my place in Florida. I noticed that I didn't hit as far there as here, but chalked it up to humidity.

Very plausible if you're up high enough. Rule of thumb I've always heard is 1% per thousand feet. You might also be getting a yard or two because of the temperature.

The 1% rule would average out. Don’t really think it’s temperature. I notice that difference

Fourth and final round back home in the books. Two at Graysburg, one at the Crossings, one at Warriors. I’m convinced it’s elevation. My added strength from being better fit balanced out the irons to where there was no real difference. I’m 5-8 yards further with my irons. Takes some adjusting.

As well as I’m hitting the ball, I need to figure out a better schedule in DC to get some rounds in.

One day I’m going to figure out how to use a driver.....

I swear I hate that club with my entire being. Slice, slice, push, try to correct, left hook.

Any tips would be wonderful.

Got a video of your swing? Hard to say without seeing it. Most amateurs could definitely stand to shorten their driver swing a bit. Should help to make much more consistent contact.

Why do you think that it is easier to hit an 8 iron than it is to hit a 4 iron? A 7 wood compared to a 3 wood? Loft and length. The driver is hard to hit because of both.

My correction for that was putting my right hand further on top and shortening my backswing

Can you clarify further on top? Top of what?

Yeah I know that was very vague. I'll try and clarify. So I'm right-handed and with the driver my right hand would always come in slower than my left. This cause the club face to open and get the slice. So I moved my right hand towards my left hand. Looks like my right hand covers my left thumb. Another thing I did was put the club between my finger knuckles on my right hand. Like if only my right hand fingers held the club. I also focused more on keeping my left arm straight. This causes the shortening of my backswing.
