The Golf Thread

I’m physically stronger now than I was a decade ago (thanks Army). My iron distances are still the same, my driver and 3 wood distance is up (but I credit club technology instead of me). All that to say a decade ago 100 yards was a perfect SW. Now, as mentioned, I have to muscle into it for 100 yards. I don’t get it

Impossible to say what it is without seeing you swing. Your plane could be different. Your angle of attack could be different etc etc. All in all though, as long as there's not a huge gap between Sand and Gap, I wouldn't sweat losing 5 yards.

Does anybody in here have tips for a beginner.

Understand that you will have bad shots. Have fun no matter what shot you have. Once I understood that I was bad off the tee and accepted that those tee shots were going to go everywhere I started having a lot more fun. Also, if you can afford it, lessons are not a bad thing when getting started.

If you can't afford lessons start with videos that improve your grip. Took me a while to figure out a lot of my bad swings started with a bad grip. There's plenty of videos on the internet that are for beginners, intermediates, and advance. Watch those you can learn a lot from them.

Thanks. My plan is to start at the driving range and practice with my driver, 3 wood, and iron or 2 and a wedge, and get comfortable with those before I start playing courses

Have fun no matter what

The range idea is great. Lessons for beginners are tricky. If you have friends that can get you started, I’d go that route.

Have fun

Find clubs you can hit and work on the basics. If you really like it, then you can look into lessons. Between lessons, get to the range 3-4 times minimally to practice what you learned. It’s worthless to have lesson after lesson if you’re still learning lesson 1.

Have fun

I’d get the whole set of clubs and practice with most, if not all of them.

Most importantly, have fun.

If you’re contemplating lessons, do it now. Don’t wait a year until you’ve developed bad habits and spend half your lessons trying to break them.

Most important thing: you suck at golf. Accept that, don’t get in your head about it. You won’t sniff under 100 for a long long time, enjoy it and be proud of every ounce of progress you make.

Learning golf is not a sprint, it’s a slow process. Also, there are days you will hit the ball well, and days you won’t. Some days your body will just feel in sync and your swings will flow naturally, others you will just feel off. That’s at any level, all the way up to the pros, that’s golf.

Have fun and don’t beat yourself up. You will get better, it will just take a long time, but the payoff is so worth it.

Ive got a whole set besides the putter. Ive just figured that the driver would be the easiest to learn to hit

I know a lot of people have the hardest time hitting the driver. Noobs and 20 year vets of the game alike. But once you hit the course, you'll quickly find that you need to know how to hit most of your clubs.

creekerballer, I get to come home Thursday for 10 days. I'm playing Graysburg Friday, and at least twice more while I'm home. What courses are in the best shape right now?

The Crossings is in amazing shape right now easily the best I’ve played on around here this year. Pine Oaks is in nice shape again this year they’ve done a lot the last couple years. Crockett Ridge was pretty good. Elizabethton and Tri Cities have both been pretty rough recently.

Tried to play Crockett this weekend. Too expensive for my blood. When did that happen? It used to be affordable.

They raised it right at the start of the year. Use to play there a lot but hardly go now since they raised it. I know someone related to the people who own it and I think they are struggling across the board. They shut down one of the courses they own and one of the ones they own in Myrtle Beach got ruined with the late frost they had this year.

I'm sure a lot of courses got damaged during the late winter. I know a lot of people who played that course because it was affordable but stay away from it now since they raised the rates

Yeah I think she told me they were one of the courses that was shutting down until September at the beach. I played there about 2 times a month last year and have only been that many times all year.

Thanks for the info. Sucks to hear about Crockett’s Ridge.

My top three home courses were Graysburg, Crossings and Crockett’s Ridge.

I can’t believe Pine Oaks is as good as you’re advertising. If it’s still super cheap I might try at least the front nine

I think pine oaks has improved a ton. They shut down buffalo valley so now the city only owns pine oaks. They did a bunch of work 2 years ago. They just fixed up all the bunkers recently. I think it’s 33 on the weekends for 18 with a cart, something around that

Guess this will sound hypocritical, but I’m not against paying $40 for CR. Can’t fathom paying 33 for Pine Jokes though. But I’d prolly walk on a weekday anyway
