The Golf Thread

I used to play Andrew Johnson regularly and River Trace quite a bit too. I still think Graysburg is one of the greatest hidden gem golf courses in America. Never cared for Cattails.
I used to play River Trace regularly and have played Andrew Johnson quite a bit as well. I always really liked River Trace, it’s a shame it’s closed. The lake that ran next to #2 at River Trace was also a good fishing spot (it’s a slough accessible from the Nolichucky River). I’ve only played Graysburg once and would like to play it again sometime.

Number 2 was a pretty tough hole. We always played the back tees then, and I would aim my tee shot at the strip of rough between the cart track down the left side and the fairway, just in case I leaked it a little right. I was afraid to aim for the middle of the fairway in case I pushed it right. That strip of rough was only about 10 feet wide, and I would hit it time after time, or even left of it, which was worse. I didn't want to be there because the ball was a little below your feet there, and water on the right, but it was amazing how many times I wound up right there. Any other time, there was no way I could hit a target that small.

That's a blast from the past, haven't played there in at least 25 years. I always enjoyed playing there which wasn't very often. I always carded a good score there, helped me that it wasn't very long. What kind of shape is it in these days ?
It is pretty easy, and in about the same shape as always. Of course , the Bermuda fairways are still dormant.

I had an excellent chance to win what may have been the first tournament held at Twin Creeks when I was in college. At that time, it was a 9 hole par 3 course, then it became a 9 hole par 36 course with a driving range, then an 18 hole course. In that tournament, I was tied for the lead at even par after 36 holes, and I had been playing about 4 or 5 years, and had not played but a couple of tournaments.

I was so nervous. I hit the ball well, but three putted about 5 times, and wound up 3rd I think. It was a neat little par 3 course with the holes anything from a wedge to about a 5 iron, from what I remember. That was probably around 1967 or 68, at a guess.

#2 was definitely a fun but difficult hole. #6 was probably my favorite hole on the course.

I never cared that much for that hole. For some reason, I tend to hit the ball left on downhill holes, and right on uphill holes. It must be a visual thing or something. My first cousin lives in a house left of the fairway at the bottom of the hill. I have hit her house, her yard, over her house, etc. more than the fairway. I had a mental block on that hole.

One day, I was playing with my brother and the pro there. I was last on the tee, and after they hit, I was standing on the tee, waiting. They said "wtf are you waiting on? Hit it while we're still young." I said "Judy is pulling out of her garage" and it was on the tee facing side of the house. Even though it was 250 yards away or whatever, I just knew I would put it in her garage while she was backing out.

Is the back nine of Twin Creeks still absolutely wide open? As in it doesn’t matter which fairway you hit, as long as you hit “a” fairway you can still score well on any of the holes?

Been forever and a day since I played it, but that's the way I remember it. I don't even remember one tree on the whole 9.

There are a few trees between some of the fairways but most are short. Holes 10-14 run parallel with one another so you have multiple fairway options. The downside to the open nature of the back 9 is the wind. I’ve played there many times where decorations from the cemetery adjacent to 14 blow across the fairways like tumbleweeds.

Another downside with opposing fairways is that you can get shelled from somebody playing back toward you on the next hole.

I never experienced much wind at Twin Creeks and always found myself in the most danger from other holes at Tri Cities. Had way too many close scares there. Plus they ticked me off one day a long time ago and I decided to never go back

Has anyone played River Island since they changed the name and apparently cleaned up the course? The last time I played that course I thought it was pretty meh, but the layout was always cool.

Probably been 10 yrs or more since I played there, but it was in pretty good shape then. I always like the layout too, not too difficult, but certainly not too easy either, always made for a fun round of golf.

meh, the cat's out of the bag at this point. I don't care that Kostis spoke up on a podcast.

That said, he mentions he's not sure, and the media would create a huge controversy if they brought up cheating.

All he needed to do was speak to Slugger White in private and say to keep an eye on him. Very simple and would not have been made public.

Kostis job is to report stories. If Slugger White and his rules crew didn't figure out to watch Reed from Kostis saying 'Well, the lie that I saw originally wouldn't have allowed for this shot,' live on air, then the rules crew is dumb.

He only said he shut McCord up by saying it. I didn’t see where he said it was said live during a tv broadcast.
