The Golf Thread

I used to play Andrew Johnson regularly and River Trace quite a bit too. I still think Graysburg is one of the greatest hidden gem golf courses in America. Never cared for Cattails.
I was a member at River Trace when it first opened. It changed hands some time ago, changed its name, and is now closed and an overgrown mess. Not a big fan of A.J.

Ironically I never cared for Link Hills. While AJ wasn't overly difficult, I liked the overall layout. I've played courses all over the country, especially the South and East Coast. To include a lot of the high name courses in the Carolinas. I just love Graysburg. The original 18 for me is as good as it gets. I'm biased I guess because it's the course I honed my game at, but it's just the perfect blend of challenge, risk/reward and easy pars. Chimney Top is a little harder than the original 18, but I don't think it's as good of a layout. That first par 3 is a b**** if you screw up your tee shot.

I agree with all that about Graysburg, but I am not too fond of A.J. I guess you knew that Munson moved on a couple of years ago. I find the greens at Graysburg to be a challenge. It is hard for me to get close to the hole on some pin positions, even chipping the ball. I grew up at Link Hills, when it was only a 9 hole course, but it's nothing special.

Yea I know Munson moved on. Last I knew they were operating without a pro? I still go play every time I’m home and I know I’ve yet to see a new one. I learned to chip at Graysburg. Maybe that’s why it’s the strongest part of my game.

There is a lot of slope on certain parts of some of those greens. I learned to play on those flat greens at Link Hills. I like Graysburg, but I find it harder for me to play. Not hard, but harder. I have only played Chimney Top about 3 times. I don't like it, especially the downhill par 5 with the pond. I find it near impossible. I hit my second in the pond the first time, and up on the hill behind the other 2 times. Then I hit it in the pond. I guess I should lay up, and hit a wedge 3rd.

Unless I just really hit a great drive, I layup most times. I’ve literally hit driver, pw, gw often. It’s just not worth it. You’re dead if you’re on that hill behind the green and obviously you can’t be short. It’s not my favorite hole, but those next 4 are a lot of fun. Hole 8 on Chimney Top is just awesome. Have to really trust yourself aiming your tee shot to have any prayer of a good approach. I don’t like ending on par 3s though. I have a friend that can drive hole 6 by flying it over that massive dog leg. I’ve come close hitting shots for fun, but it’s too risky. I don’t think there’s a spot on the original 18 that I haven’t found myself in. Also, closest I ever came to an ace was on 17. Needed maybe a quarter of a roll more. I struck that shot as pure as I ever have.

I was thinking the big dogleg hole was number 7 on that side?? Like I said, I've only played it 3 times, so I could be wrong. I like the original 1st nine best. I think that's Knobs. I never really learned the names. I just knew it was the first nine, and the other (Fodderstack?) was the back nine. Then, they added that other mess that I don't like.

You’re right. It’s seven. Knobs is the front nine, followed by Fodderstock. I like Fodderstack the most. Just a great track. Now I’m homesick

That par 3 on Chimney is #2 and it's just a 4 or 5 iron straight up the hill to a large green. It's not that difficult a hole really unless you jerk it bad short and left in jail behind the trees. The big slope on the 2 tiered green can bite you in the ass if you're up top and the pin is upper bottom.

It’s #3. Start with the par 4, followed by the par 5. Then that par 3

Knobs is the easiest of the 3 nines for me although the wind can be a real bitch on #s 5,6 and 7. I don't really dislike Fodder, but it's the hardest on my scorecard, always has been.

I know a lot of people that don't like #4 on Chimney, but after I had played my first four or 5 rounds on it I learned to love it. I learned that if I couldn't get my drive in that little spot in the fairway long and right where it's not such a downhill lie to just make it a 3 shot hole.

#8 on the Knobs 9, my favorite par 3 on the course and closest I have ever come to an Ace, literally less than an inch from the cup. I also hit one long and left there a few years back and hit a goose dead in the ass, poor fella was just getting ready to swim off when I unfortunately and accidentally drilled him.

That's a good par 3.

I have airmailed that green before, right into the drink.

Same, on more than one occasion. They didn't use a back pin placement that much, but when they did and you wanted to try and get close, then giving one to the fish was definitely a possibility.

I have hit a drive or 2 in that same pond off of #9 tee too. I have got Titleists in every pond on the course.

I have a few left of # 2 and #6 fairway.

A high school friend bounced one across then frozen pond onto the fairway once playing #9. I laughed for ten minutes. Same round, I got to 6 on Fodderstack and hit a perfect wedge into the center of the green. Only problem? Green was frozen. Bounced like I had hit the cart path.

Craziest play in my life though: totally mishit my tee shot on #7 on Knobs. I was no joke over beside the #6 green. Hit a flyer over the trees onto the green. Made. birdie

😲 beside #6 ? Man that's a serious dead shank right. I've played from just about everywhere on that course, but never there. What club did you hit from there ? That's a helluva birdie, that two tiered green can be an ass kicker.

Yea I was feeling nervous about trying to hit my 4 wood off the tee and get it out far enough. I just shanked it dead right. I think I hit a seven over the trees, but I honestly don’t remember.
