The Golf Thread

Well when I was on vacation last week we had a family golf tourney and my sister absolutely wiped the floor with me. This will not stand. I now play golf.

I went up to golfsmiths on Monday and picked up some clubs.

Got a set of used ping eye 2s they look old but are in pretty good condition.

I went with a new Adams Insight XTD a3 Driver, good price for $169.99 (i guess, from what I could tell online)

However, the second time at the driving range the club head FLEW OFF THE SHAFT and landed about 20 yards down range. Are you kidding me? I rarely hit the ground hard when I swing, and this sucker came right off.

Fuming, i raced back to golfsmiths and told them about it, that said "ah, it happens" They offered to replace it no questions asked, but they didn't have an exact copy (10.5, stiff). So they offered me a new Taylor Made Burner Draw for only $10, they were on sale or something, and the manager took some off.

By the time all of this was over it was dark and now it sits in my garage, as I wait for the morning to try it out. Anyone try this yet? And yes, I have an amazing slice, i seriously think it defies physics.

I also got a 3 wood, putter, and a 56 degree wedge all used.

Any other recommendations? I go next week to get my swing analyzed, since it's within the return window (even for the used clubs) they can switch them out if needed.

I am addicted. I plan on doing nothing this summer but playing...

I think the head coming off that Adams driver was probably a good thing. You'll be happier with the Taylor Made that is set up for a Draw.

Yeah I sure hope so. I am heading out to Fox Meadows here in a few, although the first time I am going to swing it is on the first tee. Memphis needs more driving ranges

About to go and bestow a late Father's Day round on my dad, I haven't played in a while so god knows how this is about to go.

I couldn't agree more, try down here in Olive Branch if you get a chance man. If I wasn't so busy this weekend I would meet you out there for a game today.

Played until dark yesterday. I have never hit the ball as well only to score so poorly. I shot a 46 on the front and 31 for 6 on the back before the dinner bell rang. Aside from a disastrous misclub and two consecutive snap-hooks, I was really happy from tee to green. However, I seem to have a rare disease that causes a violent seizure every time I make a putting or chipping stroke.

Seing as how that was about the 3rd round I've played this year that wasn't in the dark or in a scramble, I wasn't that disappointed, but it looks like I better spend a little time on the practice green before packing my bags for Kapaluha.

My round in microchasm: the 20' eagle putt I had on 4 turned out to be a somewhat ticklish par.

Well, we could only squeeze in 10 holes, but I shot 64 to that point. I did shoot 9s on the first 3 then a 37 on the next 7 though, so I didn't actually do that bad after I got into a groove. I was happy about one thing though, I hit a pretty sweet shot onto the backside of the green on a par 3 that was about 190, the impressive part (at least to me) was that it was the first shot I got a lot of air under, and I had to, because the bulk of the distance comes in the form of a giant water hazard. At least if you take the straightest line to the green, which I did. I stilled bogied the damn thing when I three putted though.

I highly recommend GAVol's modified scoring system which involves picking up once you get to triple bogey.

Played in a scramble, and it's the first time I've played a charity scramble and they had the tee boxes all the way back..

It's the third year in a row, I've played this one, and it was long..We only shot 5 under

The new Titelist 905r is working nicely,

Good call, so far I have tried the Southaven one and Putt Putt on Summer.

I don't know if I am ready to have people see me play...unless you need a good laugh!

Ill bring the beers

Interesting because i always knew it as doozer's modified scoring system.

As a hacker myself (about an 18 handicap; give me a 6,000-6,200 yard course and I'll throw a 83 or 84 out there sometimes, move me back to the blues and it's more like 95), I will say this: when you reach double par on any given hole, you should pick up and take your 6, 8, or 10, in the interest of speeding up play. Golf takes long enough as it is without someone really, really taking his time to read that crucial 4-footer for a 13.

thank you for your honesty. I can't stand players who act like they routinely shoot in the 70s or low 80s only to find out when you make them play their actual tees or even step back to the tips they shoot in 90s or worse. That or they play on a 5700 yd tipped out course that is somehow still a 71 or 72.

However, I've won quite a bit of money of that type player too, so maybe I shouldn't gripe too much.

I'm really frustrated and think that I may have screwed myself (heck, I suppose that's a given if you play golf). It all started early this year when I decided that if I was ever going to really score well that I need to add a power draw to the arsenal off the tee. I had been able to draw the middle irons but had never been able to bring it to the tee. I have always played a fade that resulted from a strong grip to combat a big slice. That quest has resulted in a swing that has become much too shallow I think. I'm able to hit the draw off the tee, and I'm hitting my long irons well but I have lost a ton of consistency in my short and middle irons. I think that it's the shallow swing that is causing my inconsistent ball flight. However, there is another thing. I think I'm digging the toe of my irons...at least that's what my divots look like. Is this because I'm finally, for the first time releasing through the ball and I need to actually get fitted and get the lie adjusted on my irons? I'm playing Cleveland CG4's with S300 shafts that I'm pretty sure are bone stock. I'm 5'8. Help anyone? I'm going nuts over here....my ball flight was so nice and consistent before, and now I just can't get comfortable.

Usually sticking the toe in the ground is a result of a bad lie angle or a steep swing with an "over the top" move . . . which is the exact opposite of what you are describing. A guy your height with a shallow swing would typically fight sticking the heel in the ground; not the toe. I guess there is a possibility that you've gotten your hands on some clubs that are set way too flat for you, but chances are you've got a stock set with standard lies.

I think I'd get a pro to watch me hit a few balls before I did anything. It almost sounds like that power draw you are hitting off the tee is really an outside-in slice swing that you've turned into a modified pull hook with a strong grip.

I've got a round in about an hour. I think I am going to try to dose that whole putting seizure thing with beer. That's gotta help, right?
