The Grill and BBQ thread

Thank you, it is my 40th bday and my wife has been open to getting me something nice. Like I said I am looking for something very easy to get started and then I look to hone my skill and become better and more educated..

Anyone recommend a pellet smoker?

Happy birthday.

I love my Traeger. Set the temp and roll. I can even check the app for temp / time from bed for an overnight cook. LOL An added benefit over electric has been the ease of cleaning afterwards.

Where do you guys buy your grilling meat, other than local grocery stores? Are they regional or national Fancy Meat stores?

We have several excellent small butchers, but their prices are painful.
I have a butcher friend of mine who sells wholesale. Hidden gem in my area. I can get a whole filet for $25. Granted I have to take the silverskin off and trim it up real good but can’t beat his prices.

Agree with this 100000%. If you have the look in window on the masterbuilt electric smoker you won’t be able to see into it after the first smoke and cleaning it is a b*tch.

I will list a few.

Snake River Farms - Used once would do again Expensive
Porter Road - Want to try
Simpson Meats - Want to try
Crowd Cow - Used multiple times and will continue to use
Butcher Box - Used once for a special deal Subscription Service
Chesire Pork - Used multiple times
Catullo Prime Meats - used multiple times and reasonably priced.

There are plenty of others so others can add to the list with their experience. It is best to signup to receive emails. That way they will let you know when deals are going on. I almost never but unless it is on sale and they are always running a sale somewhere.

Thanks! I'll start googling them, but are they pretty much local to you? What area do you live in? I'm in Asheville.

I have a place in Burnsville, NC but I live in the Charleston, SC area. These places are all over the USA. I never had a problem with shipping, everything is packed with dry ice. They all have only certain days they will ship so nothing sets somewhere over the weekend.

Let us know what you try out. I like Crowd Cow because you know what farm or boat for seafood it came from.

I have seen these are the meats frozen?

I started with a Weber Smokey Mountain several years ago, bought a Pit Boss pellet smoker when my gas grill died last year. Haven't touched the WSM since. The set and forget factor is huge when I have other things to do, plus startup and clean up are so much easier.

I love my rec-tec pellet smoker. It’s way better than the masterbuilt electric smokers but also more expensive. They have different sizes in different price points. It’s easy to use and the food that comes off it is really good. However, with that being said when I smoke foods on my Kamado Joe the Kamado tastes even better to me. What you’re going to find is each smoker you use is going to give you somewhat of a different taste and it’s personal preference on what you like best. The Kamado is also more work than the rec-tec because you have to watch your temperature and play with the vents a bit to get it where you want it and I can’t fit as much food on the kamado as I can my rec tec. They all have pros and cons.

I always wondered how much are we talking for pellets in use? If I make 4 racks of ribs, how much would I use and what is the cost in a sense?

So there are different brands of pellets with different prices. I use a brand called Cookin Pellets. It comes in a 40lb bag. That bag costs me about $40, so roughly $1 a pound of pellets. The rec-tec I have has a 40 pound hopper so it’s perfect for me. Most pellet smokers have much smaller hoppers. What I like about mine is I don’t have to refill it for a few cooks. I actually have 2 rec-tecs. I have a big one and a mini one. The mini would only be able to fit 1-2 racks of ribs. The large one I can fit 6 racks on at once if they’re laying flat. If you use a rib rack you could make even more. I can’t tell you the exact number of cooks you can get because it depends on how long your cook is and the temp that you cook it.

Snake River Farms, Simpson's Meats (TN based), there are lots of choices for premium meats. Grab you wallet! LOL

In my Timberline 1300, which they claim will hold 15 racks, I use about approximately 1 lb of pellets per hour at 225. So for a 6 hour smoke, avg $1 per lb price, = $6. But it is a large smoker. I would imaging it would be less for a smaller size.
