The Grill and BBQ thread

I use the Cowboy brand you get at the grocery store. Big bag for under $10. Burns well. Some big chunks, some medium, some small. Have also tried royal oak and B&B. Also like the B&B. I tried a brand one time that was busted up hardwood pallet charcoal.

the biggest thing i've noticed is the lump charcoal burns far better in the smoker than it does in my weber kettle grill. It will not last long and dies out in the grill. So, I use briquettes for that. And lump coal or briquettes in the smoker depending on what I have in stock. In my smoker, I get good burn times from either. I have also tried a few premium brands of charcoal. there's a reason why Kingsford costs you some bucks.

I love the smell of Cowboy...I think they use some maple wood. It just leaves too much ash for me....but other than that, if it's on sale I use it. I like Royal Oak for the price, tbh. Under $10 for a 16lb bag at WalMart. Paying over $1 per pound for lump is pretty pricey. FOGO is supposed to be really good but it's almost $1.50 per lb.

Asmoke 100% Apple Wood Pellet and Grills

I was look at the zgrills special about 2 years ago BOGO and now I see this. I am still debating
Just by looking at the link it seems small. I don’t know what would fit on there. Pellets can get expensive too. Not sure what the price is on a mini rec tec right now but I love the build quality of those

It's hard to tell much from thier website. It's tiny for sure. Good luck doing a pork butt, decent size brisket, or turkey on it. Pellet grills tend to be good at smoking but struggle with searing. So the choice of marketing it as a grill and not a smoker is puzzling. I see several misleading claims on their website as well. The price they list as bottom end for charcoal grills ($399) is laughably wrong and they act like applewood pellets are something new. They also show a picture of burgers as "BBQ" (pet peeve). It's made in China as are the pellets. That and the initial price point make me question it's build quality. I'd wait on some reviews for sure. Lord knows I've been wrong before. But my initial reaction is to be sceptical.

For the price point it seems pretty reasonable. If it is just you and wife/gf it should work just fine. 500 is hot enough to cook most things. I wonder if their pellets are a special size where you have to use theirs? Why wouldn't other pellets work if you wanted to mix up the woods?

Thanks guys.

@kiddiedoc, I took my wife to the new meat market. Besides the steak and scallops, she picked out a rack of lamb, sausages and some salt/rubs. There's a reason this is a successful marriage. 😁

Smoked chicken thighs, and 4 types of German sausage today... made a large batch, more than I could eat. So, I made a sampler plate and carried to the elderly neighbors (they are 85). These two work in their yard daily and keep very active, impressive to see. They were appreciative of my gesture, and talked forever. Nice to see that.
