The Headed To The DTG&B Postgame Report.

Bollocks, im not one to take up for thuggary, but think it was pretty well proven he was just trying to cover for his boys and the DA balled up and threw him in with the murder charged to get him to turn.

Don't let facts get in the way!

1. Its good to hear Tenn and Championship in the same sentence. Period.
2. Scotty Hopson was as aggressive as I've ever seen him for 40 minutes. Kudos Shop
3 The team defense is as you said. They are REAL fun to watch when they defend like that. Not coincidentally, I think we can play with anyone when we do it.
4. The passion for offensive rebounds was crucial. That's effort.
5. This team can be as good as they want to be.

good points

Hat, nice write-ups the last two games. It helps when UT wins, but I agreed with every single point.

That Villanova game reminded me of when we won at Xavier a few yrs back. Balanced attack, aggressive defense. We threw the punches in both games. Goins was as much of a pest (if not moreso) the other day as Ramar Smith was against XU.

Goins is as valuable to a team's defense as any player I can remember. He disrupts the other team's offense from the get-go.

1. Given the surrounding circumstances, that's as big as regular season win as Tennessee has ever had. As winning Maui did for UCONN, that'll get at least some of the discussion back on what's happening on the floor.
2. Tennessee was spectacular in both games this week defensively. I'll be shocked if Corey Fisher is throttled like that at any other point this season.
3. The four guys who will have to carry the offensive load did so tonight. Harris, Hopson, Tatum, and Williams have to put up big numbers to mask the offensive deficiencies of their teammates.
4. Aside from an awful night from the field, Melvin Goins played his best game at Tennessee tonight. He had a huge challenge and met it.
5. It's great to get a tournament title after a long drought. Even better, I think the NIT might actually ask UT to come back in four years.
6. Villanova still has the same problem they did last season. They are absolutely dependent on their guards to score.
7. Yarou may eventually be the answer to that problem. Pinkston being cleared to play wouldn't hurt, either.
8. UCLA has serious, serious problems. Howland is going to wish he had actually taken the DePaul job.
9. I can't wait til the officials back off this ridiculous "by the book" style. There's no reason for every game to have 50 plus free throws.
10. There's now no excuse for Tennessee heading into conference play with more than one loss. Other than the game at Pitt, Tennessee is markedly better than everyone they play before SEC play tips off.

I want to believe, but is it possible that Nova is overrated? They were exposed in the big dance last year.

That may very well be the best defensive effort I've ever seen in the half court defense. If they continue playing like the last game, this team will be hard to beat.

Yes. They don't have much in the way of post presence, and they don't have tons of depth.

OTOH, their guards/wings are for real, and UT completely shut them down. For most of the game Nova just couldn't get any kind of shot they wanted at all.

I think there are two definite things we can take away:

1. Our perimeter defense is legit. We're probably one of the top five half-court defensive teams in the country, especially as regards perimeter D.

2. We haven't been tested by a team with dominant big men yet.

I think that given #2, it's pretty fair to stay on the fence for now.

SC while I agree with 2 I am having a hard time finding a dominant big man on the schedule. Not at pitt. Is the sophomore from uconn alex going to be the best we face until the tournament?

Maybe none of Pitt's posts are dominant, but they have more quality size than anyone we've faced up to now, in McGhee, Taylor, and Zanna. Of course, their guards do all their scoring, which is good for us.

Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and Vandy all have some size. Kentucky's Jones, Georgia's Thompkins, and Florida's Young are all good enough to test us.

Mississippi State, of course, has the much-awaited Renardo Sidney.

We should know by March whether we can guard the post or not, IMO.

I'm not sure that our post defense is that great, but we do have three bodies and 15 fouls to give at the five position.

Teams have got to start making adjustments soon when they see UT's opponents, particularly the guards, shooting such a low percentage from the field. This is good defense not luck. They will be more patient and come inside with it. Hopefully this plays right into UT's hands.

I am liking this short transition game they are playing, push it up quick and go to the basket if its there otherwise pull up and start running the offense. They have scored a lot of points in transition quietly.
