The Heisman race is really just beginning

The heisman race is only just beginning. I guarantee that unless the players mentioned on the first page all start snapping it together, they won't be in NYC. (Maybe Troy Smith)

I know most of you cried when Manning didn't win but the award isn't as bad as you like to think it is. People are there now, but to be there at the end of the year, the candidates will have excellent numbers except maybe Smith who can get there on his record alone. The rest will have teams with solid records too.

What were Tee Martin's career stats? What were Peyton's? Considering it was an Arkansas slip-up that our defense capitalized on, Tee couldn't have made it to that title game.

I think the point everyone is trying to make is, Ainge has a long way to go to be put in the same category as Manning. Manning had his number retired last season. Ainge still needs to put 2 seasons together comparable to Mannings last 2 at UT. He's playing well now.

If Ainge runs the table on offense the rest of this season and in a bowl and then duplicates next year, he can be up there with Peyton. He has last year still in people's minds and there are those who still despise or dislike him because of that. I don't think Peyton ever came close on being called what Ainge has been called and labeled.

Well the bowlless season was bad taste for everyone, not to be forgotten for a while, but at least Ainge can make it better for himself as he is doing.

If Ainge keeps up his performance this season, then he will get an invite to NY (he will most likely not win the Heisman.) If he enters 2007 healthy, he should be the front runner. Looking at our 2007 schedule, it sets us up nicely for a championship run. If that happens, Ainge wins the Heisman, the SEC, and the BCS, and UT fans are still placing Manning above him, then that says something very sad about UT fans.

It's awesome for Erik to be mentioned on someone's list THIS year, after the debacle witnessed last year, but for the fair minded, the Heisman race is supposed to reflect the best players of the CURRENT year, not tainted by what may've happened in the past. Erik is doing well enough to be on a list or two, but I think we have to look ahead to next year for him to merit any serious contention for the Heisman. :good!: And as some have mentioned, I would concur that it is nice for this very special season we have going, that the boys just play ball and stay a little under the radar until closer to season's end - no high profile junk to distract them.

haha:crazy: Dennis Dodd has Reggie Nelson 4th in the Heisman race. He consistently writes nonsense, he has to be the worst journalist ever.

In the future, please warn me whenever you link a page with Spencer Tillman's mug shot displayed on it. I'm still cleaning the eye makeup off my monitor.

He's obviously just trying to act intelligent and have people think "oooo he's got a defensive player on his list. He must be really smart."
:lolabove: which we all know is NOT the case...

He is doing far better than Manning ever did at UT.

He has played far less than a full season. You can also add up all the mistakes Manning made in his 4 years and they don't come close to being as bad as Ainge's sophomore season.

...Manning never beat Florida, something Ainge can say.
Face it. The SEC is not as loaded like it was in the Shuler, Manning and even Kelly ERA's. They compared Casey Clausen to Peyton to. Back then the SEC was stout from top to bottom Bama was good GA. was good Auburn was good Hell even Miss. State was winning games. To compare each of them isnt fair. They each bring something to the table. If you want to really open a can of worms it was a blast watching Andy Kelly and his uncanny way to win a game.

Its way to early to make this comparison!!

However, it appears Ainge has the tools & the coach ( Cutcliffe) to make his mark in VOL history.

There is no freaking way Ryan Leaf is anywhere near as talented as Joe Montana. That is one of the most ludicrous things I have read on this board.

The NFL Draft process is about the greatest judge of raw talent that the football world possesses. Montana was drafted in the 3rd round, Leaf was taken second overall...

having watced quite a few ut qbs, manning is tops, bar none...now personally i loved con holloway and shuler, but i remember all the thrills, as well as a few agonizing moments, peyton gave us...and i knew no one hurt like he did when he fell short, no one passed on credit to others when he won, still doing same here in indiana. i take a lot of crap up here about peyton and "winning the big one," but so did elway backers for years. ask yourself one question, your life is on the line tomorrow who do you want, of all the ut qbs, playing for you...no offense to anyone but it aint ainge, give me peyton. one of my favorite ut moments is his leading the band, and tee martin could sure be my back up in "life game" over ainge and most others. opinions are like rear ends, most folks dont care for others and thinks theirs smells best...this is just mine.

Why do we have to forget a player when a newer player plays well? Why can't we embrace ALL of our great players of all time? If Ainge breaks Manning's records (which he won't), why can't we love them both?

Joe Montana is regarded by quite a few people as the best QB ever. Montana's draft status means absolutely nothing. The game was different back then. Quarterbacks are put at a much higher premium nowadays. Thus, QBs that don't have near the talent as most second round picks go in the first round. Recently, you can look at Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers. Peyton Manning was drafted first, the same position as Alex Smith. Are you to tell me that they are equally talented? I suppose it's just a matter of time before Alex Smith throws 49 TDs. They should go ahead and unretire Montana's #16 and retire Smith's number.
