exactly. The cartoon is nothing but a joke. To truly tell the story of this remarkable journey in movie form that both the younger generation and adult generation can appreciate, there is no way you can tell the story of the party, trip to Rivendell, their trip through and under the Misty Mountains, including Bilbo and Gollum's famous encounter, the spiders and elves of Mirkwood, the fight with Smaug and the Battle of the Five Armies within one movie. There just wouldn't be enough time for it to make any sense. I see nothing wrong with this being split into two parts.
I'll glady let them squeeze two two movie tickets out of me to see the movie without cutting parts out or leaving gaps. If it's too much for you to pay, get ahold of me this winter Roughneck and I'll gladly foot the bill for your movie ticket. I'll do the same when the second part is released.
Are you asking me out on a date?
In all seriousness, if I was as big of a fan of the book as you sound like you are, I'd want as much of it as I can get. The problem is that I'm on the fence about it and the fact that it's a 2 parter makes me not want to watch it. If it was one movie I'd see it.
Would I get a happy ending after the movie?
and yes, I'm a nerd. I actually can't stand the Star Wars and Star Trek crap, but I love all of Tolkien's tales of Middle Earth. I'm hoping The Silmarillion comes out within, say, the decade. I don't want any of the scenes to be rushed, it would just take too much away from it.

Because it's Peter Jackson and he'll make both parts 3 hours long. I am not excited because he's directing them. He could be so awesome if he just knew how to edit. Not everything you film is screen-worthy.
Never had a problem with long movies. Would rather know the whole story than have the edited for time version.
I don't have a problem with long movies as long as it's interesting and relevant to the story. Godfather is the perfect example. King Kong and LOTR are perfect examples of movies that are ruined by length. The original King Kong was 56 minutes and Jackson made that one into a 3 hour flick.
I felt like LOTR movies got progressively worse (though I still like them all) and they got progressively longer.
