The infamous UT Rocky Top/Lee Corso Commercial...

I don't get this. To this dirt poor middle Tennesse Hillbilly that grew up amongst chickens, swine, good moonshine :p etc., I think the commercial is funny. There is a law in southern middle TN..."if you can't laugh at yourself you must not laugh at anyone else." So what our region of the country is regarded as poor and uneducated? Look what we've done with that. We have a great state these days. Smile and learn to take a poke every once in a while. We have nothing to be ashamed of. These poor people down here in AL however.....

About the only sensible post thus far (especially the last line).

It's a joke, people!

It's healthy to laugh at yourself.

It's publicity.

And, if you think that ESPN devised this commercial as a way to get back at the Manning supporters, undermine our socioeconomic status, or rekindle painful flames of a difficult past. . . . uh, OK. Right. I think we might be just a LITTLE on the egocentric side? Let's not sound like Bama conspiracy-theorists.

My guess is that they made the ad because they thought it would be FUNNY. What a far-fetched concept, I know. And, you know what? It worked. I laughed out loud. It gets attention and people remember it. Just EXACTLY what a commercial is designed to do.

Look, don't take this as me "dissing" my state. Everyone around here knows that I'm as Orange as they come. But criminy. . . .

Nobody from Tennessee ends their sentence with "But criminy...".. :shakehead:

Nice point. Didn't mean to confuse anybody.

How's this:

But haaayullll. . . . .

I've seen the commercial, and I can see the funny side of it. But I wonder if ESPN has come to the realization that people from Tennessee ARE thin skinned and just goin in deeper on the same wound because they DO see the fan base of the Vols as trailer park trash. Im proud of being southern...a Tennessean, but I don't know of anyone who appriciates being laughed at as oppossed to laughed with. If its simply a humorous commecial that we're supposed to be mature adults and laugh at ourselves for our glorious absense of sophistication....where are the ''laugh it up at em'' ESPN commercials on Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, Penn State, Florida,Ohio State, and Texas? There may be some I haven't seen em.

Guys (and gals), you're missing the point. They could have used Mississippi, or Arkansas, or Kentucky, . . . . . but NOBODY WOULD HAVE CARED. Fact is, people know that Tennessee is a football state. We won a championship not long ago, and have contended for the SEC title many other years in recent history. And, we'll be back again soon.

THAT'S WHY IT'S FUNNY. It's the greatest kind of joke: a joke on a joke. The whole commercial is a parody of commercials. Do you REALLY think that yuppie schmoes in California think we sleep with pigs? If so, then kick that swine out of your bedroom and grow some hair on your chest (well, only the guys, thanks).

A good example: the Hardee's ad with the NY taxicab drivers talking in hardly-comprehensible up-nahth jibberish. Funny stuff. I wonder if they're protesting.

Grandpa Jones, Kenny Price, Roy Clark, and Buck Owens. My mama used to make us all sit down and listen when they sang.

Which part? The "we're not ones to go around spreading rumors" girls, Jr. Samples and his car lot or the "doom, despair, and agony on me" boys? :birgits_giggle:

She also used to make us listen to the Chuckwagon Gang and some guy called Martin Mull (?) on the radio every night. I did not care for the Chuckwagon Gang.

For some reason, those girls compel me to use this smiley for the first time. :run:

It weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Since we're on the topic (somewhat) of Hee Haw, does anybody remember the couple who were married on the show and the wife was always ironing? WHAT was their names on the show?? Ronnie Stoneman was the "wife" and Gordy Howe was the "husband".

Are you sure a hockey reference didn't just accidentally sneak into Hee Haw? :D
