The Irony of Obama's message tonight

If the voting public is dumb enough to believe Ayers is not a changed man, they should be neutered.

And they should be neutered if they're dumb enough to believe that Obama sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years and had no idea about Wright's extreme seperatist messages.

Changed in what way? He's not bombing anymore but as recently as 2001 did he not claim he didn't go far enough with his actions?

I really don't know much about the man.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt when he says that his words were deliberately distorted. I am not a big fan of Wikipedia, but this explains it to a point.

Three minutes of soundbites in over twenty years from the pulpit.

I feel that is all I need to say.

Yes, and it was obvious from that NPC performance that those 3 minutes were not representative of his overall views.

Goody! I still think that might have been a set up since he handled the original story so badly.

But, calling him out for the NPC performance in no way excuses him from not knowing the messages be spewed there for 20 years and him sitting there.

If he really spewed it for 20 years, then I return to my original statement, why only 3 minutes of soundbites?

have you listened to some of his more recent speeches? He may not commit the actions today but he still seems to be preaching it. The man hates this country, that is obvious in his speaking engagements.

Oprah sure thought it prudent to leave the church because of some of his messages.

And Barack Obama has already called him out on his NPC performance.

I don't believe anything a politician does is not designed to look a certain way. Sure, things pop up that are shockers but to think that BO didn't know this would be brought up is crazy IMO. I believe it could very possibly be a setup (just like the DNC speech to gauge public opinion)

Mr. Wright, who has long prided himself on criticizing the establishment, said he knew that he may not play well in Mr. Obama’s audition for the ultimate establishment job.
“If Barack gets past the primary, he might have to publicly distance himself from me,” Mr. Wright said with a shrug. “I said it to Barack personally, and he said yeah, that might have to happen.”

It seems to me he has just done a damn good job of getting the black vote out in the democratic primaries and essentially splitting the non-black vote. My numbers are loose guesses, can you offer anything more solid TennNC?

i'm definitely not the expert, but cnn.com seems to have a pretty good site for looking at state-by-state breakdowns such as the one in nc:

Election Center 2008: Primary Exit Polls - Elections & Politics news from CNN.com

And this Pew survey overview gives a good snapshot, but I didn't see when the survey was fielded (before/after Wright hit)

Section 1: General Election Patterns of Support: Obama Has The Lead, But Potential Problems Too

My take is that race is definitely a barometer, but so are age and social status. Obama does extremely well amongst blacks (around 85-90% in most primaries), younger voters (esp. those under 30), voters in urban districts, voters with an average HHI of $75K+ and college-educated voters. Clinton does much better amongst older, lower middle class, rural white voters.

Getting blacks to vote is crucial to Obama winning the Dem primary and competing in Nov., should he get the nomination. But there will be a battle over independents (like myself), many of whom are college educated, and many of whom are flocking to Obama so far.

BTW, Talk of the Nation (afternoon talk show on NPR hosted by Neil Conan) is doing an election special show right now on the elections, and the segment coming up is about race and the elections. If you'd like to hear it and miss the live broadcast, it should be available to listen to here by the end of the day:

This polling data is a bit dated (from March) but it shows McCain with a pretty solid lead among pure independents.

Exactly.

Wright basically called Obama a liar....saying that Obama isn't really distancing himself from Wright, and that it's nothing more than political posturing by Obama to make voters think that he's distancing himself from Wright.

Obama is a hack, as soon as he lets his wife talk, no matter her true intentions, it will turn women off immediately!

I don't agree with all his politics either, but doesn't seem like you have heard her speak much. She speaks better than Hillary does and I have yet to even see Cindy McCain do anything more than smile. (Let it be known, I am aware she has spoken, I just have never noticed the media covering it.)

I have heard parts of two speeches and during both she said things that made me cringe.

fuel prices that are the result of decades of inaction by Washington DC and fear tactics by the left, a housing "crisis" brought on by ignorant consumers and predatory lenders taking advantage of ignorant consumers.

those are the only two issues most people can point to and squawk about how "bad" the economy is. Inflation is low, interest rates are low, unemployment is low, the stock market is working back toward 14K. The housing market is beginning to stabilize once again as people who are actually qualified to own a home are doing so.

Obama's plan is to tax us right out of the economic recovery that is just beginning.
