He'll ruin Davis like he did Chievous, trying to make him a 4. Kid's clearly a 3.
If Richardson scores in double figures, this team is tough to beat. Having that fourth option makes this team damn near impossible to stop
1. Who decided a 9PM start time? Anyways, a great, great Tennessee performance tonight. This was a pure blowout and you know what's better than a big road blowout in your favor in conference? Pouring it on the ****ing Red team.
2. Tennessee's defensive game plan was absolutely excellent. Cuonzo Martin throwing a 1-3-1 zone against Alabama? Great call. Poor Anthony Grant looked as if he saw a ghost he was so perplexed. Tennessee's length really affected Alabama and they rebounded much better off the zone than I originally thought they would.
3. Tennessee shot 30% in the first half. They finished right around 48% overall and went 9-20 from three point range. That's mental toughness we have not seen from Coach Martin coached teams at Tennessee. That's a good sign. They looked for the three point shot tonight and it was the right call. It worked perfectly.
4. On the offense: I thought it flowed really well all night despite the spotty first half shooting. Good looks and Tennessee attacked the middle of the zone. The off ball movement was the key. Tennessee cut hard and reset their rotation on the three point line to make Alabama scatter against their zone. I liked Maymon in the high post and it gave Tennessee some counters they could play off, especially ball reversal three's that Alabama could not contain.
5. The box score does not show how impressive Darius Thompson was. He had one turnover while being pressed most of the night and really got the offense where it needed to go. He played solid D for most of the night. He is an SEC caliber PG and I thought it was a big game for him to show he can lead this. He didn't disappoint.
6. I liked A.J. Davis' energy and defense tonight. He also did a decent job helping on the press and didn't panic. Good to see him back in the rotation.
7. The Bernard King Player of the Game: We are going with Jarnell Stokes. He controlled the middle of the paint in the 1-3-1 zone and even the 2-3 zone. He was 8-10 from the free throw line on the road!!! 16 rebounds was complete domination and that dunk sealed the game. Just phenomenal from Jarnell tonight. It might have been his most complete game as a Vol.
8. Tennessee was 21-26 from the free throw line on the road. More mental toughness this team hasn't shown previously. That kind of performance will win you plenty of road games.
9. My only two complaints: The first half offense was a little too passive on driving to the basket and looked too much for the three point. The offense flowed well to get inside looks, but too much looking for a jump shot on the perimeter. That got corrected in the second half. Eleven offensive rebounds is nit picking against a lenghty team like Bama, but not a big deal.
10. Getting victories over the Red team is ****ing enjoyable. Hell, I might pull out a victory cigar tonight. But this should just be the beginning. February is usually where Coach Martin shines and this is the right way to start off. I don't have two feet in the water yet, but there was a mental toughness tonight that I haven't seen all year from this team. That's a big step in the right direction. This was a very nice victory. No SEC road win is easy. They are all important. Now get our boys out of Tuscaloosa and let them enjoy the victory!
Go Vols!!! :hi:
Having watched both play, SR and JR. I'd say he'd have a much better JP Prince type career. Not sure I agree with this. Chievous and Davis are two different types of players. Chievous is a tweener in every sense of the word, and it was a terrible decision to take him as a recruit. He was very underdeveloped and raw, and didn't have a position. If his last name wasn't Chievous, and his father wasn't Derrick Chievous, he would be playing*in the OVC somewhere.
Davis, also of famous pedigree, definitely has the frame to be an effective PF. However, he need not fall victim to his own body size, a la Renaldo Woolridge. Unlike RW before him, if Davis accepts the idea of becoming a PF and develops his game to reflect that position, gains weight, and gets stronger, then he could become a force in the post. His dad was a beast down low defensively and on the boards. AJ already has a better offensive mindset. He just needs to realize and accept that his future is in the paint, and that is most direct line towards increased playing time.
With about 25-30 more lbs, he could have a Wayne Chism-lite type career.
JMO
It's why I've contended on several occasions how important he is to this team. His defense can keep us in games, but his offense can win us games. It also seems like he is more effective offensively woth Thompson in at PG. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not.
Having watched both play, SR and JR. I'd say he'd have a much better JP Prince type career.
Dad already had the mind set. Hope it isn't one of those do it or bust things with Martin. JMO
Admittedly, I haven't seen enough of AJ to make a definitive decision (frankly no one has), but he just doesn't seem to have the ball-handling skills or guard mentality of JP, but that is based on a very limited sample size. He's also a couple inches taller than JP. His team needs him at PF moving forward, and he was recruited to play there, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to him. JP played PG in high school, and was recruited as a PG, so their skill sets don't seem, to me, to mesh quite as much as you believe.
Difference of opinion though. No big deal. He has a ways to go regardless of where he ends up playing. I just see more of a inside/outside game being his future (with added weight and strength) similar to Chism or Ron Slay. Without the weight gain and a propensity for the perimeter, I see a better defensive version of Renaldo Woolridge. A JP Prince-type game would be his ceiling in my opinion.
Again, JMO.
Just throwing my 2 cents in here but I am not so sure AJ isn't a JP Prince/Wayne Chism hybrid. I agree with the folks saying he should be a 4, that has been my preferred position for him since day 1. However, if he gained some lbs and starting to embrace the physical aspect to playing the 4, then his slashing JP type game would start to show more. IMO He would have more success driving against a 6'7-6'9 4 man rather than a quicker 6'3-6'5 3 man.
He definitely would have more success driving against taller, slower 4s than against prototypical SFs and SGs 6-8, 6-9 players with guard-like handles are few and far between.
Great win in a venue that has been hard to get a win over the years. Bama isn't that good of a team, but they play teams tough at home like most teams. We beat them worse than Fla did which is surprising.
On to the next one. Vandy is a tough team at home too. They are playing better and won't go quietly. They only have 7 scholarship players. If we play our game, we should win. Can't leave their perimeter shooters open. That is their strength. They're talented but young in the front court. We need these next 2 games.
