The Liberal Argument for a Higher Minimum Wage

When I started working minimum wage earners were first job workers and students. Pay increases came with experience and job performance. So who are the 1.3 million mw earners today? From some statistics I have see ,in the neighborhood of 700,000 today are between 16-24. Another interesting thing is in the restaurant industry here waiters an waitresses earn minimum wage houry, when tips are incuded, some ,if not many earn considerably more than inimum wage. Another interesting question is how minimum wage earners spend their money. Does it result increases in factory production for a longer period of time or one time purchases that affect the economy only for the short term? Any thoughts and referece data?
Will I still have to tip if my waiter is making $15/hour

Some places add 20% for tip to prices. Additional tipping is optional. But I dont think they still get the wage + standard tip= minimum wage allowances for tax purposes

And if they do add it, I don't add any more unless the service is exceptional. Not too long ago I was on a layover in Bogota, and we had one staff member attending to about 10 of us at the hotel bar/restaurant. She needed roller skates. My part of the bill was something like $15. I left her a $40 tip. I can go the other way too. And I have.

Our servers have told us that they want their pay schedule to remain in place even IF the $15 hour passes. They know people will stop tipping.
I would never have wanted a min wage to apply when I was waiting tables. A couple of football weekends could cover rent for the entire year

Had a girlfriend in college that worked most weekends as a server. Man, she made some serious bank. She would walk out with several hundred bucks on Friday and Saturday both nights. She could extract so much money out of a table, it was ridiculous.

Situation:
Min wage goes to $15
$8 an hour "rookie" gets the $15 immediately
$11 an hour "experienced" worker goes to $15 immediately
$15 an hour "veteran" worker stays at $15 an hour because the employer had to raise the other workers
Veteran is now at the BOTTOM of the pay scale again
Fair?

Spot on. When you ask liberals who support the minimum wage hike about how to scale the wages, they don’t have answers.

Looks like a good time to misquote and misuse Matthew 20 & the Parable of the vineyard owner...

@volfanhill
Looks the the $15 fed min wage is DOA. I am curious about your servers. When I waited tables, we make just a bit over $2 per hour from the restaurant.

If $15 min passed, would your servers make the minimum plus tips?

No. They would be paid the $2.13 an hour. When they declared their tips, any wage "shortage", would have to be made up by the company. Now many ask why would the servers declare their tips. Most large outfits have been sued by the IRS enough times that controls are in place. I get a report once a month of every servers declared tips on cash checks vs credit cards. Any major discrepancy results in discipline.

Our employee rule of thumb back in day was report enough tips to get you to at least minimum wage per hour. I suspect our GM knew that was the worker's approach but they never said anything.
