The LSU Postgame Report

A lot of our main problems would be solved with a true ball handler and passer at PG. A line up with a true PG, Golden, McRae, Maymon, and Stokes is nasty. That's not counting Hubbs, Richardson, Moore, Reese, Yemi, and Davis off bench. That's nasty, I mean really, really nasty.

Disgusting.

Why didn't Reese play any at all tonight? He's got to be more useful than McBee. I also think he is better than Cheivous, who did get some playing time. Edwards also should get some time.

1. If not for the abomination by the officials, that game would have been 15+ tonight. Either way, the Vols got a nice win against a team that has been on a hot streak and now are officially on a roll with four straight wins. Good night.

2. It's incredible how much better this basketball team when they RUN (not jog) the offense. Their cuts are crisper and they are making movements with purpose (something they had not been doing).

3. However, I'm disappointed in the turnovers. It was a fast pace game, so 13 isn't too bad, but when LSU pressed, it took UT out of its rhythm. UT has got to stop picking up it's dribble. I also don't understand why Coach Martin doesn't put Jarnell in the middle and let him facilitate on the full court press. We know he can.

4. Bernard King Player of the Game: Jordan McRae. What a performance! The best scoring performance by a UT player since Chris Lofton was roaming the sidelines as a student. Not once did I think "that's not a good shot" by Jordan tonight. Every shot was in rhythm. Ever since Trae took back the starting job, McRae has gone back to what he's done best: scoring the ball. He did in all ways. Off the dribble, left handed layups, fastbreak buckets, three points shots off screens.......just a wonderful performance tonight. Enjoy it.

5. Richardson deserves some immense praise tonight for his defense on Anthony Hickey tonight. Hickey went 5-15 and Hickey just didn't get in the paint. Cuonzo Martin's decision to put Richardson on opposing point guards (especially ones that thrive at getting in the lane) has been a big reason why UT has won four straight.

6. I thought the refs not calling over the back was the reason for LSU's 13 offensive rebounds. However, the Tennessee guards got a little too excited to get out and run. I didn't see the same crashing of the boards that I usually do from the guards. UT has to make sure that in order to run, they have to get the ball back first.

7. We needed another point for Jordan McRae, but too show he's becoming a complete basketball player, he had three steals and six rebounds, including three offensive, and I thought played a good defensive game. That's the evolution of a player. He's not a one-dimensional player.

8. What I love most about the recent explosion from three? They keep taking the right three pointers. Too many times, a team that is feeling it from deep ruins its offensive flow by shooting too many three's. UT was 10-15 tonight. They almost all were good shots. I can only think of one or two that weren't within the offense. It also helps when Jordan McRae goes NBA Jam, but the point remains.

9. UT finally capitalized on turnovers. Earlier in the year, I harped that UT doesn't create turnovers and doesn't score off them, creating a mismatch, especially because UT turns it over at a bad rate. UT had 13 turnovers tonight, but LSU had 13 also. UT got 18 points off turnovers. When you do that, great things happen.

10. A very nice win tonight. UT seems to have created a good offensive gameplan. Had UT been able to pull down rebounds, UT would have won easily. UT shot 18-21 from the line to close it out, Golden is playing well, McRae has found his game again, and another double-double from Stokes. This postgame report could have been 15 points. I thought UT played extremely well. UT has a big game on Saturday. You get five days to better your press beater, get your rebounding down, and continue the offensive flow. I was happy with the performance (especially the strong first half) after the Kentucky massacre. They didn't show any let up. They looked like a team on a mission. Maybe that mission holds bigger and better things.

Go Vols!!! :hi:

Good report. Just some other thoughts:

3. That is where Maymon is sorely missed. To alleviate our lack of a true PG, Maymon was great at handling the ball in the middle of the court last year.

5. Good observation. Because of this, I don't know why Richardson wasn't guarding Joe Jackson against Memphis. I know it would have created a mismatch somewhere else, but Jackson was the hottest player at that time for Memphis. There is an old thread before that game where several of us thought Richardson would play Jackson.

Good win. Just wish we could have the Georgia and one other close game back. I am guessing Richardson will be on Turner on Saturday. Lets not let him go off.

Mcbee is 6'3 and guards the 2 guard or pg. Reese is a small forward and probably close to 6'8

As always, great stuff, ZJC. Here's what I have to add (the Section 326 postgame report, sponsored by Maker's Mark)

1. The decision to sacrifice some defense for some offense by starting four guards plus Stokes has paid off big-time for Cuonzo. I think it will definitely help versus Florida. Not sure about A&M. We just didn't have the size inside to stop O'Bryant, who pretty much had his way with us before fortunately fouling out. Yet the offensive flow is soooo much better with the four guard lineup.

2. That being said, LSU is a solid squad, and I do NOT want to see them again in the SEC tournament. Can't count on McRae going ballistic every game. Right now, on a neutral floor, they beat the Noel-less Cats 7 times out of 10.

3. Armani Moore is going to be very good. Unfortunately, he's not there yet. If he can step up his game one more notch down the stretch, and McRae, Golden, and Stokes continue to play at this level, we're going to be tough for anyone to handle. Moore reminds me of McRae as a freshman - the potential is there, but he's a little out of control, struggles to finish around the rim, loose with the ball.

4. Yemi, on the other hand, has regressed offensively. He's just completely helpless with the ball in his hands. Or, as is often the case, off his hands.

5. All THAT being said, the officiating was terrible and the game shouldn'tve been that close without some ridiculous calls against us. I'm not usually one to whine about the officiating, but that was as bad as the Rupp Arena game.

6. I sensed that CCM wanted to get Edwards and Reese a few minutes so Golden and McRae could get some rest, but every time it looked like we were going to pull away, LSU kept sneaking back in it, cutting it to 7 or 6. The fact that Golden and McRae are basically playing the entire game concerns me down the stretch as fatigue sets in.

7. If I told you at the beginning of the season that, knowing Maymon would be out for the year, we'd be sitting at 15-10, 7-6 in the conference, how many of you would be unhappy with that?

8. Thought so.

and has been playing some pretty good d lately.

I assume he will have more 3's than any UT walkon in basketball history and will probably rank in top 20 all-time . Those are just guesses of course, but a career that many highly rated kids never have. So what he makes mistakes. Everybody does. His are just glaring for various reasons. If he is shaky, you sit him. If he's steady, he doesn't suck.

This team is hitting on all cylinders. Mcbee playing good d and knocking down his shots could be key down the stretch. He won the USCjr game with his buckets. Need him to keep it up.

Good report ZJC.

I only saw the final 12 minutes, so I won't add much. We are getting better and gaining confidence at the right time. I think we can only afford one loss the rest of the way however.

I really doubt a guy like Richardson, who does everything well, is your best defender, and has two+ years in the system takes a seat to Hubbs, a freshman. We will see.

i do agree with you.. but if hubbs is as good as advertised then i wouldnt mind see him in the starting five... thats a hell of a starting lineup. regardless with hubbs and maymon next year... we should be a top threat for sure

I thought Richardson had Thomas during the Memphis game.

The only way Hubbs will start over Josh is if he is an amazing super stud, an injury occurs or Stokes leaves imo
