I beg to differ. It will IMPROVE his chances in the primary, drowning out whatever happens tonight in the the debate. AND it will HARM his chances in the general election.

That has always been true for '24. The indictments may solidify his base, but by how much, really? He was so far ahead it was never going to matter. All the indictments really do is drown out folks like Christie and Pence, who can now be dismissed simply as RINOs because they express the same point that the media (except Fox) and the Dems are making.

As you correctly note, the polling is that once you get past the base and the nomination, some portion of the GOP is so disaffected by Trump that they won't vote. The lukewarm enthusiasm past the base is even waning. And, amongst independents, Trump's support is dropping like a rock.

That's why the institutional GOP is so worried. They realize that tying the party to Trump is going to mean losing the WH yet again and reverberate in losing ground in the Congress.
