Well, just because no one suffered a particular damage does not mean a crime was not committed. For example, you randomly shoot at someone and miss, but just because you missed does not mean you did not commit a crime. Here, Trump and his team tried to hide the payment to Daniels, first with an NDA (which is legal) but second by cooking the books to hide the fact of the payment (which is illegal).
Having said that, for purposes of sentencing I agree that the fact that no one was injured materially matters and will help Trump. I don't think this should result in jail time. I also agree that in terms of politics its not going to be meaningful to Trump voters because its not like the first time Trump's very poor and weak character has been exposed. This is just one more in a long line of examples of that and won't change anything.
Character used to matter to Republicans. Used to.
DWIGHT EISENHOWER (1890-1969)
The qualities of a great man are "vision, integrity, courage, understanding, the power of articulation, and profundity of character."
RICHARD NIXON (1913-1994)
"With all the power that a President has, the most important thing to bear in mind is this: You must not give power to a man unless, above everything else, he has character. Character is the most important qualification the President of the United States can have."
