The Meltdown That Is Happening At CatsPause

The NBA and NFL should have a true minor league system like MLB. Once a player turns 18, give them the option of college or going pro. Stop this idiocy once and for all.

You realize that would kill the college game, right?

That would turn it into college baseball. All the top talent, especially the pitchers, go into the minor leagues right out of high school, to be developed. No disrespect to anyone that played it or is in love with it, but in my view other than the CWS college baseball is pretty much unwatchable.

Paid to come to college?

edit: Oh duh. So you'd rather keep the DLeague like it is b/c if it got a good option the college players would shun college? I understand.
Not really sure what you are getting at here. What I am saying is that when they are paid to play sports in college, the universities that have big endowments and deem big time sports worthy of spending money on will rule. That and the true student athletes that get scholarships and actually attend to get a degree will be shut out. There are far more kids that use those scholarships to get degrees, than make it to the pros. So the long view will be that you will see some programs disappear completely from schools as it will be far more costly to compete for 5* athletes when they are looking at the money they can earn at Vandy versus Miss State. UK's football team will cease to exist.... wait... nevermind.

If they were going straight to the NFL, yes. But if there was a minor league for them to go to it would be perfect. Let the guys who want a degree go to college. The guys who want/need money, can go semi pro.
riiiiiiiight. They'll probably clear something like $40K/year to get an early start on that Alzheimers. Great idea.

ruin college sports? I dunno, but i used to enjoy watching kids playing for their school and staying to get their degree and hope maybe for a chance at Pro levels. i used to watch all college sports, now, I rarely watch except for UT football. let em go to a 'D' league, make some money and move on, but allow and encourage them to go to school if they so desire as a student only.
If you have to pay them, those with the deepest pockets will win. Plus what will happen within the locker room. You have some 5* kid getting serious coin playing with kids that aren't making squat and doing it for the scholly. And then, what if that 5* doesn't pan out? He gets the money, and the kids doing it for the love of the game/university have to carry his sorry ass. The dynamic could tear a team apart. You have that now to a degree, but when you introduce $, it will be different. And I guarantee you that if there is a 5* that is getting paid a lot of money at UT, he had better produce or the fans will boo his ass every time he walks on the field.

I misunderstood. Gotcha.

I'd like to see the NBA adopt the same rules as MLB and the NCAA agree. Let the kids enter the draft straight out of HS but if they don't get drafted or don't sign they can go to college but have to stay for 3.

Almost as good as letting them get an early start on alzheimers for free.

Oh wait, that's different. They are getting a piece of paper. Much better.

I do realize there would be less quality players in CFB. But not as many as people here seem to believe.

A total of 224 players go through the NFL Draft each year. So let's use that number for this hypothetical minor league. I doubt there would be that many as this league would most likely max out at 16 teams or so, but just for a starting point.

So this league is going to draft anyone from High School seniors to college seniors. The majority of draft picks would be college sophomores and seniors/juniors who just missed getting picked. You'll have a few get drafted straight out of high school, but I would bet no more than 10-15 on average.

Not even everyone who is good enough would bypass college. Peyton, Eric Berry, Andrew Luck, etc all would have picked playing college. Hell, we had 3 guys good enough to get drafted who decided to come back and ball with us this year. A minor league wouldn't have effected them.

I believe a minor league would relieve 2 issues. Paying college players and getting rid of the guys who want to major in football. Most of these guys want a degree. But the football major guys end up being the trouble makers. They have to be babysat.

This is a college first and foremost. If kids aren't coming for an education, they dont need to be there.

There's an illustrious history of failed lower tier professional football in the US too. It's not as desirable a market as many in this thread are making it out to be.

This is the best case against it, IMO. I believe a semi pro league could succeed given 2 things. 1) It has to stay a spring league. If it is in the fall, it would be eaten alive by CFB and NFL. 2) It eventually has to be tied to the NFL. I believe diehard NFL fans would watch the Milwaukee Whatchamacallits if they knew these were going to be future Green Bay Packers.

At least that piece of paper can get them a better job than parking cars. It is much better. They are afforded the opportunity. If they choose not to take advantage of it that's their problem. Hard to make 6 figures with a GED and a limp.

To me, that's the argument for a minor league. Get the guys who have no desire to get a degree out of the way. Why force them through college and pretend like they are getting an education when they have no interest? If the fear is they are going to alzheimers, etc from playing ball there is just as much a chance in college vs in a semi pro league.

I agree that they are much higher better off in the long run getting a degree and using it. However, some of these guys dont want a degree. While you and I would not take the risk for 40-50K a year, they would. They just want to play ball. That's it. I don't believe these guys need to be on a college campus simply because we've turned a college sport into a semi pro league.

College is also for an opportunity. Education AND Sports both provide an opportunity to prepare yourself for the future.

Agreed. I don't believe in doing away with CFB, just letting the guys who are good enough and have no interest in education to go ball elsewhere.

Football is loved, but the off-season fosters that love. 24/7 football would be over saturation imo and never work. Football excels now because it's not played from April 1 to Oct 31 or Nov through June. It's nice and short, 5 months compared to 7 months for MLB, 8 months for the NBA.

Stick a fork in him, Calipari is done.

Kentucky needs to hire a coach that wants to win with talent instead of trying to just win the player lottery.

It always sucks when the tourney tends to dictate success in the minds of fans. Is it fair? Sure. But Cal is one year removed from probably the best team in history. Of course they fell short. But we go 40-0, and no one ever forgets. We go 38-1, and no one remembers. It's the way the game goes. As long as Cal has years like 2012, 2015, with deep runs, I'm fine.

He's literally reached his lowest point in the post season in the 7 years he's been there. Calipari has no game unless he's managed to recruit 4 to 6 NBA caliber players onto his team.

I'd say losing at home to Robert Morris in the 1st round of the NIT was the lowest.

He's been to the tournament 6 times and gone to the Final Four in 4 of them. The 2011 team had freshman Brandon Knight and freshman Terrence Jones as its headliners, started Josh Harrellson at center and still went to the Final Four. I wouldn't worry about Calipari's coaching ability. If you want someone who needs loaded teams to be successful, talk to Roy Williams.

So did he have 4-6 NBA caliber players on every UMass or Memphis team?

That feeling when your program is so bad you need to make S16 rings.

nice memes btw

That feeling when your school has to give a **** about basketball because your football program has never done anything relevant. Haha sorry, couldn't resist. But didn't a terrible UT beat UK this year? Lol

Its all good and fun =p
