I hope ABC gets their sh#t together this year and broadcasts the race in HD!

I was so pissed last year when it wasn't in HD that I emailed them - I never do that.

Indy is the greatest spectacle in racing -- you'd think they'd go HD for that :eek:hmy:

i find it kind of humerous that Andretti's name is on there, considering he's the guy who has led the most laps ever at Indy without a winning a race.

perhaps my 16th reason to love the month of May is hearing "and Michael is slowing down" over the PA with a few laps to go.

Michael's had his share of disappointment at Indy.

One year he had the field smoked but his car gave out around lap 186.

One year he made an awesome pass on Mears on the outside going into Turn 1. Mears paid him back with an identical pass (both passes were rare and virtually insane).

In his last official race, he was leading when it started to rain - the race was over 1/2 way down so it would be official. He was almost screaming on the radio for them to go yellow. The race stayed green, the rain never really came and he faded back.

Likewise, Mario dominated one year in his "Hanna" sponsored car but I think he broke before the race ended. He had a great car the year of the "spin and win" but Sullivan had fate on his side.

Mario and Michael were outstanding drivers and both dominated Indy during the race only to come away with one collective win. Add Marco and Michael's younger brother and they still only have one win.

Al Jr. and Sr. were outstanding drivers and they have 6 Indy wins between them. Add uncle Bobby and the Unser's have 9 Indy wins!

ESPN on ABC's live telecast of the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 will be in high definition via Sony high-definition broadcast technology, a first for "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Coverage of both weekends of qualifying on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN on ABC also will be presented in HD.

1992 was the year he (Michael) had the field smoked that set up the Al Jr/Goodyear finish. he went on 186 and they went green on 191. amazing race. i remember it was like 50 degrees that day, if that. Mario and Jeff both went to Methodist in seperate incidents. heck, there were 5-6 drivers who got beat up pretty bad that day. if i recall correct there were 4 Andrettis in that race- Michael, Mario, John (Michael's cousin-Aldo's son) and Jeff.

1991 was the year he got Mears on the outside only for Rick to get it right back. that was my first 500, i was 11. that will remain until the the day i die the single greatest racing moment in my life. my 1st race was Rick Mears's 4th win. amazing. i remember the last 10 laps or so like it was yesterday.

the Andrettis have even been close more times than those you've brought up.

only 11 get in on Saturday.

only 11 get in on Sunday.

then they fill the field the following weekend.

so basically, only the top 11 speeds on Saturday will be in the show, and when the track closes on Saturday afternoon, those 11 are in the show. so qualifying on Sunday will be the same, but for spots 11-22. the following weekend fills 23-33.

Oh, cool. They're still using the best four lap average to determine 1st, 2nd, and so on, right?

yup, best four lap average.

there will be bumping everyday of qualifying and things will get real interesting late in the day around Happy Hour.

these changes actually went into effect last year, but it rained on Pole Day (no suprise there).

Yep. I've been there 18 times or so. Started in 83 (Tom Sneva won; Teo Fabi on the pole). Most of the races I attended were during the time that both Mario and Michael were in their prime - well Mario was finishing up but he was still strong through the 80's. When they were together in the KMart cars, they were strong. Penski was also dominant with Sullivan and Mears - picking up Al Unser at the last minute for his fourth win was a classic Penski move as well. From 83 through mid 90's, I only missed 84, 86 (I was there but it was rained out; Rahal won when they finally ran the race) and 90 (I think - whenever Arie won in the Domino's car). Over the last 10 years, I've been hit or miss.

I started in the infield and worked my way to the stands. I've watched from the front straight, short shute between 3 and 4 from the back stretch right before Turn 3.

I've been to Talledega, Mid-Ohio, Texas Motor Speedway, and the Milwaukee Mile. Nothing comes close to race day at Indy. Nothing.

i'd say tommorow (aka Fast Friday) afternoon is when we'll see who has what for Pole Day. or, they may not even really trim them out until Saturday afternoon.

qualifying is going to INSANE on Saturday. and it's going to be the best during Happy Hour as the track cools. lots of guys will be making runs.

my prediction:

there will be a few guys who go out when the track opens Saturday around 12. they'll run practice laps in the heat of the afternoon and the around 4 things will get NUTS!!!

i am flipping pumped!!
