The more I listen to Coach Sal the more I realize

lol @ the OP. as ViD just stated, some of you guys are quick to forget what Wilcox stepped into and what he has had to work with. considering Wilcox was fielding a talent and depth depleted team, that could never get a rest because the offense sucked too, i would say he did a good job at UT. i wont even mention the gauntlet of a schedule we had last year, or playing one the most explosive offenses in the country in an OOC game, the year before, in Oregon. unbelievable to say he was in over his head or he is too laid back. sounds like a little too much man crushing over a DC that has yet to coach a game.

Wilcox was not the problem at all I don't think. The defense played good enough to win more games last year with few outstanding SEC-level players and no depth. I think he did a very good job getting what he had to work with up to 20-something best defense in the nation.

Producing a defense that was ranked in the top 30 nationally with the undersized defensive line, extremely young LB corp, and a patchwork secondary is a very good achievement.

That Justin Wilcox was way in over his head here at Tennessee. This is the first time in a long time that I've been this excited about a coach. Sal is the real deal, and I CAN'T WAIT to see the product on the field!!

Go Vols!

Each coach has his own style. Wilcox just happens to be more relaxed than your average coach. Some players respond better to a more relaxed style than someone yelling in their face 24/7. I'll admit he was out of his comfort zone but I wouldn't say he was in over his head. He didn't do a terrible job with what he was given.

I agree...and some posters on here were worried because he hasn't been a DC in the SEC before! Good grief! The guy has been coaching for a long time. I think UT is in good hands. I would be highly shocked if you don't see a better tackling team as well.

Every DC has to start somewhere and I think he will be really successful!

This may have been said already but I believe if Sirmon would have stayed nobody would have cared that Wilcox left. I could be wrong but that is just the impression I get. I feel like we have upgraded the coaching staff this offseason but only time will tell.

Boise St. Defense ranked 14th in the nation in 2009. That's not good enough to win the SEC. Georgia is ranked 5th. We have to compete with Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Lsu, etc..
I simply think Sal is a big improvement over Justin Wilcox. That is my opinion. He is well spoken, intense, preaches discipline, and the players seem to be responding to him much better.

Im also very excited about Sal. But lets not forget our defense ranked 28th nationally overall last season. Also if we had some resemblance of an offense last year our D might have been ranked higher. I think Wilcox did a fairly good job given our lack of depth on defense and our incapability on offense.

Absolutely on target, imo.

I know very little about this topic and don't claim to know much but I have always heard that Justin's defense was a gimmic defense to disquise less talented
defensive players. Boise State

We will find out in the coming years. He now has his shot with a second BCS school. I am glad he is gone, he wasn't a great recruiter, and lacks the passion that coach Sal exudes. Hinshaw, and CSS are a way better recruiting combo than SirmCox. Also I grew tired of him being in the running for a new job every year, and knowing if one left, the other was gone as well.

Yes you can and glad you're on board here - your stuff's been solid from what I can tell. Just know what you've got coming from homers if you tell it like it is. The unicorns, rainbows, and dove releaser crowd doesn't cope well with factual crticism of the program......but I think you've probably figured that out by now.

really fade Unicorns? UNICORNS ? glad I'm not the only one that sees them :)

i think he is a young ,good coach, but the learning curve is steep in the SEC,that was a problem with a lot of last years staff also,it looks like Hart and Dooley went with a more experienced group this year,no idea which one of them decided to go that way,but i think it will be a good move

I find it quite funny that I was questioning Wilcox all of last season and I was treated to pitchforks and torches for it. Now he's gone and we have coach Sal, and suddenly all of you are suddenly acting like you knew all along Wilcox was a subpar DC - homerism at its finest....................LOL. Struggle with consistency much, VN??

Lump everyone together much fade? I haven't supported Wilcox since the Texas fiasco.
