The Morning After - Sober Reflections Week 5

I don't believe Joe is subpar. He is at least above average. You got spoiled on Manning and Hooker. Joe is a Vol for Life and is getting better every week. His one Intercept was nothing but a good punt.
Joe isn't getting better every week, nor is he above average.

VOLS won in spite of Milton. It's a very good team, but Milton just isn't it at QB

PFF, FWIW, graded him at a 52…
Pretty rough. I take what they grade with a grain of salt, but if you’re that low, it’s probably not that you had a great game and they were completely wrong.

Baron was the highest grade. He did look ELITE last night.

Another guy who doesn’t get the praise and has quietly been a monster for us this year is Eason. He is so explosive and moves well. In his second year at DT, he looks like a guy who is going to keep improving and will play on Sundays. He doesn’t move like a 300lb DT.

Good grief! It depends upon what the goal is. My goal right now is a 11-1 record and whatever that entails. If you think a team that would be on a 9 game win streak that includes the teams we are up against would not be in discussion for the CFP, I don't know what to tell you.

Why branch off on some tangent? The statement said we control our own destiny and we dont! If we win all our games and are 11-1, and UF does not lose another SEC game.....guess what. WE DO NOT GO TO ATLANTA.....that is not controlling our own destiny.

This team controls the chance to have a 11-1 season, which quite honestly would more than likely land them in the CFP regardless of whether they play in the SEC game or not. That would also be one more win than last year.

Yes, but it does’t measure anything important. It is just a stat that is based on stats. Not anything about how the game is being played or managed by a quarterback.
Lol what?! What does that even mean? So how did Joe manage the USC game? He didnt! His coaches did. Joe doesnt have the same control over the offense that Hooker had. Thats why you see Joe look to the sideline on every single play. Its why we pass to the flat like we did when we had Guantanamo as QB. He is being "handled" by the coaching staff because there is no trust in his abilities.

It was a good analysis. Overall team did really good and it was an exciting win. The OP acknowledged the all the good. But also pointed out the concerns. You can’t beat the best teams on the schedule without excellent quarterback play. And we’ve all seen enough out of Milton now to kind of know what the ceiling is with him. Last night was a textbook Milton performance.
Wow thanks for actually reading my whole post and not just focussing on the one thing you dont want to hear or accept.

Well, I'll bet you a dollar that UK doesn't rush for 300 yds. against us. For whatever reason we are there cryptonite, and they are Florida's. Even when Fla. has beaten UK, it has been a struggle.
I sure hope thats true!

Were you the one that made this completely ridiculous comparison last week too?? It’s really nowhere near accurate. 239 yards on 21 completions just over 11 yards per completion, 66% completions… JG could only dream to have a night that good.

we used screens to get the ball into the hands of our speedsters (White, Wright, Sampson, Small & Thornton) quicker… however, there are also throws down the field (plenty of examples, not gonna waste time typing them up here.

My point is QBR will never show how what the QB is doing right in clutch movements impacts the game over all. It’s simply a mathematic equation that “weights” plays, giving greater value to plays i the 4th quarter (when we were well ahead and slowing things down) & least value to the first quarter… it’s a stupid stat!

The only FACTS that matter in any football game is the final score and who won and who lost.

Regardless of what some think, we still control our own destiny for the season. Games are not won on paper based on whatever stats folks want to look at. If this is only about the stats, then let's just stop the season right now and crown the team that has the best stats as the National Champ, why play anymore games?

This team can beat any team that remains on the schedule. Those road games will not be easy, that is a given. A couple of the home games will be challenging.
I dont think you understand how divisions work. We lost to Florida so we IN FACT dont control our destiny when it comes to wining the division.

Florida will probably lose to Georgia and UT probably will too. Florida will probably lose to LSU and UT will probably lose to Bama. So at that point we fall below Florida.

Beyond that I would say UT losing to UK is more probable that UF losing to Missouri.

At any rate when you lose to UF in the 3rd week of the season you lose your ability to control your destiny.

Not sold on Georgia coming here and getting a win after what I saw while they were in auburn yesterday….

Gonna sound like a POS, but if UK continues to give Davis that many carries and rely solely on him to win games like they did against UF, he won’t be the same player by the time we play them.
Their open date falls the week before we play them. Barring injury, they'll be fresh for us.

QBR does a fine job in this case. Milton was #10 in week 5 and is #10 season to date. Its very consistent. I cant think of a single time this year that I thought Milton impacted a game in a clutch moment and made me think if it werent for him we would have lost. Please bring a serious argument with examples instead of juat crapping on a stat that doesnt fit your narrative.

I think UT can beat them if the game is at night. I worry though that it will be the CBS game and UT has a horrible track record of embarrassing themselves on CBS when they could win.

Let’s see how the Vols graded out.

Elite grade = 90-100, All-Conference = 85-89, Starter = 70-84, Backup = 60-69, Replaceable = 60 >

Offensive Grades (minimum 18 plays — 25% of offensive plays)
TE Jacob Warren — 77.6 (52 plays)
RG Javontez Spraggins — 73.9 (74 plays)
RB Dylan Sampson — 72.2 (24 plays)
C Cooper Mays — 71.8 (70 plays)
RB Jaylen Wright — 71.3 (30 plays)
RT Gerald Mincey — 70.2 (74 plays)
WR Squirrel White — 69.2 (69 plays)
WR Chas Nimrod —68.1 (19 plays)
WR Bru McCoy — 65.9 (25 plays)
LT John Campbell — 63.8 (74 plays)
TE McCallan Castles — 58.3 (28 plays)
WR Ramel Keyton — 56.2 (73 plays)
QB Joe Milton III — 53.7 (74 plays)
WR Kaleb Webb — 53.6 (30 plays)
LG Ollie Lane — 51.7 (74 plays)
RB Jabari Small — 49.9 (20 plays)

Defense
DE Tyler Baron — 90.7 (37 plays)
S Wesley Walker — 82.2 (64 plays)
DT Bryson Eason — 81.0 (23 plays)
LEO James Pearce Jr. — 79.6 (37 plays)
DT Omarr Norman-Lott — 79.6 (26 plays)
S Jaylen McCollough — 74.0 (61 plays)
CB Kamal Hadden — 73.9 (57 plays)
DE Dominic Bailey — 71.8 (25 plays)
LEO Roman Harrison — 70.4 (34 plays)
CB Gabe Jeudy-Lally — 70.2 (58 plays)
DT Omari Thomas — 70.0 (27 plays)
LB Elijah Herring — 69.6 (36 plays)
STAR Tamarion McDonald — 68.6 (61 plays)
DT Kurrott Garland — 67.7 (18 plays)
LB Aaron Beasley — 57.5 (53 plays)
Don't know how these numbers are determined but I don't buy them at all. Key players are listed at backups and replaceable when they aren't.

Found this…

PFF grades each event on a -2 to +2 scale with increments of 0.5, with 0 being the expected grade. For example, an unpressured pass to an open target that is completed earns a 0 grade, while a pass that breaks through a defensive line under pressure is above expectation and likely rewarded with a positive grade.

… which to me, much like QBR, is a very flawed “grading” system.

When we play a team that can stop our backs, we're in trouble. We really struggle passing the ball, and I'm not talking about the quick hitters to the sideline. I hold my breath when he looks over the middle.

This all day long. Show me a game where our RBs dont perform well and I will show you a game we lose. Milton can't win on his abilities.
