Atlanta Mayor Bottoms: Trump’s Rhetoric Gave ‘Permission’ in Ahmaud Arbery Shooting

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms addressed unarmed black jogger Ahmaud Arbery being chased and shot dead allegedly by two white men, Gregory and Travis McMichael in Georgia on February 23.

Host Jake Tapper said, “The shooting happened back on February 23. Authorities had possession of a now-viral video of the shooting from the beginning. But the murder charges were not filed until this past week after the video emerged online and shocked and outraged millions of Americans. Do you think that the two men were only charged because the video became public?”

Lance Bottoms said, “I think that’s absolutely the reason that they were charged. I think had we not seen that video, I don’t believe that they would be charged. And it’s heartbreaking that it’s 2020. This was a lynching of an African-American man. And I think that, you know, my heart goes out to his family. But I think, again, it’s a part of this bigger issue that we are having in this country with the rhetoric we hear coming out of the White House in so many ways, I think that many who are prone to being racist are given permission to do it in an overt way that we otherwise would not see in 2020.”

She added, “You have to remember, Jake, you know, in cities across this country, even if local leadership fails, there was always the backstop of our Justice Department to step in and make sure people are appropriately prosecuted. But we don’t have that leadership at the top right now. It’s disheartening. And I can tell you, I have four kids, three of whom are African-American boys. They are afraid. They are angry, and they are afraid. I think it speaks to the need to have leadership at the top that cares for all of our communities and not just in words but in deeds as well.”

Such BS

Grew up seeing it and doing it. Back in the day listing agents and the contractors encouraged it. These days its discouraged mostly because of injury responsibilities.

According to Ricky, it's very indicative of how you were raised.

You clearly grew up in a lawless household. Just a tiny notch above that of a feral child.

The moral of this thread wrapped in a tight neat bow is:
1) The video is disturbing
2) It shouldn't have taken two months to arrest them
3) Arbery was poking around property he should've been on.
4) Neighbors were on alert already bothered by at least a gun that had been stolen from an unlocked car.
5) Chasing someone with guns is questionable and you had been advised not to do it.
6) The 911 call indicates he was in a home under construction and he was running. Not exactly felony material here.
7) There are always two sides to every story and it's good those two perspectives exist in America.
8) As of today it don't look good for the McMichaels.
9) The media and social justice warriors are using this to expand their ideas, but even many on the other side can reasonably say this was disturbing and we could do better.
10) There are reasonable concerns on both sides if it was premeditated, because they chased him with at least one loaded gun, or an unfortunate event.
11) Fight or flight?
12) Hopefully as much of the facts will come out. One person will need it to do all his talking.
13) We're innocent until proven guilty.

I know I left something out. What is it?

We will never hear Aubreys side of the story.

#4 tells me that person maybe shouldn’t own a gun if they’re going to leave it in the car, unlocked.

I never said that. But I never would’ve went inside someone’s house or property like that. I believe in property rights and privacy

You clearly realized how judgy you sounded and are walking it back.

Probably best you just cease attempting to save face in here. Cut your losses and bounce, maybe?

"Now now, little Ricky... you know you aren't supposed to go into properties under construction or else you go to bed without your supper or an episode of The Waltons."

Man, we always went inside homes under construction in my neighborhood as kids. Loved jumping out of the windows on to the dirt mounds below. And made out with the best looking girl in the neighborhood too. New construction is da bomb!
