The new Brian Williams

ya, I was coming out of Nielson (sp) Physics building Thursday and saw him. But honestly I couldn't tell any difference, I guess he may have looked a tad slimer.

Brian Williams looks like Wayne Emory in his prime:good!::good!::good!:

This is total garbage. BW played an absolute hell of a tournament; he played at a level that I didn't think he could ever play at. If he doesn't get a tip-in against OSU, we're not even playing Mich. State.

As for the freethrows, Williams shoots around 55% from the line. That's not terrible for a 5. If you want to beat up on some of the players, there are a few that you can pick out. For example, Hopson and Woolridge, but most definitely not Williams.

Oh good... let's bash other players now. :bad:

1st. The post is about Williams, not Hopson or Woolridge.
2nd: 55% is bad. I'm sure coach Pearl and Williams himself would concur. Trying to say that it is not terrible is really just shows plain ignorance of the game.
3rd: BW did play well. As I said, I really like the kid.
4th: Never said that Williams didn't work on other aspects. I sure hope he did. I said if all he has done is buff up, then it is useless. How is that not true?

I'm expecting BW to be a beast this year. I just hope Pearl finds another like him. He is not typical of the type of player Pearl likes. I can only imagine how having Harris next to him is really gonna create some big time match up problems for foes. Should be fun.

Size, weight, and muscle are some of the cornerstones of a center's defensive game.

Fair enough.

The point was there are players that legitimately deserve criticism. Williams is not one of those.
I'll bet that coach Pearl would beg to differ that 55% Ft is not a legitimate gripe.

I'm beginning to think this year could be special.

Two keys:

1) Can one of the guards/wings become a consistent scorer.

2) Will Tobias Harris step up to become the go-to player we need this year.

You don't have a clue. Good free throw shooting 5's are the exception not the rule. I would be willing to bet that 55-60% is around average for a 5.

We don't have scouts who go to every practice to tell us how each player develops. What we do have is a photo of Williams looking to be in good shape with less fat and more muscle. We can draw that he must have been training and working out really hard during the off-season. We can't really speculate how he's doing with his free throws. Having said that, it seems a little unfair to give him this rough criticism. For every flaw anyone can pick out, I'm sure Bruce knows three more with that same player, and for that reason, I'm trusting that Bruce made sure Brian worked on his free throws in addition to getting buff. GO VOLS!!

I'd say more like 60-65... Wilt the Stilt (I think he was the 3rd worst free throw shooter in NBA history) shot 52.

But hey, after last season, I think BW's free throw shooting is easily his biggest weakness. Thank god he can make a lay-up now. I'm content with his free throws being the worst facet of his game.

Dwight Howard, Shaquille O'Neal, Eric Dampier, Kendrick Perkins, and Josh Smith were all 60% or worse this past year in the NBA. The average free throw percentage is significantly different in the League as it is in the college game.

For those of you wondering about his conditioning, this article should shed a little light on what he's been working on. Really looking forward to seeing him play this year. He really picked up his role as a leader in the tournament and played well above what any of us ever expected of him. I don't think I'll ever forget him grabbing Hopson by the jersey and straightening him out. If he plays with that fire and determination for the entirety of this season, he can be an extremely dominant player for us. Looking forward to his season!

Great read. Sounds like Williams is gonna be the big man we always wanted him to be. He's gonna be a two-handed dunking, floor-running, chicken-eating machine!

No biggee on the organic peanut butter. He can take Skippy to the hole...

I'd like to see a 'before' and 'after' set of pics, with one from his high school weight beside one of him now.

I saw him at Breakfast with Pearl when he was here on a recruiting trip. I read that he hadn't played much basketball in High School and he looked like he hadn't played much of anything.......... He was just a big ol' boy.

From what I have been reading I do think that he understands that he can make something of himself and big a BIG contributor to the team this year.

Should be an interesting year.

We don't want average. If Brian Williams plays the way he did in the tournament all season, I'll be happy. But we all want him to get stronger, tougher, in better shape, and better at the line. I just don't think that saying someone's game isn't perfect is a bash or slight.

That's not what was being said. Someone said it was simply irrelevant that he's in much better shape this year if his free throw shooting wasn't better.

Also, I live in reality, and in reality, Brian Williams isn't a good free throw shooter regardless of what "we want." I think it's great he's in better shape, and I can accept the fact he's not a marksman from the line.

Alright. Misread where you were coming from in the response. I'm with you on saying his getting into shape does help, regardless of FT shooting, but I hope for FT improvement too. Apologies.
