The Numbers Thread

It's being discussed because some want to discuss it. You don't have to read it. You don't have to walk in pouting. By all means just ignore the thread if you need to. I can assure you that no one will mind. :hi:

I can discuss it by pointing out it meaningless. We won't sign everyone committed and the numbers are irrelevant as of now. Take your own advice and ignore the threads of players you don't want instead of posting in them 17 hours out of the day.

I don't ask anyone why are they posting in recruits threads. The fact that "numbers" are being discussed points to some feel its not meaningless.

I get you really want TG and will be crushed when we don't. Seeing CBJ take Punters, Long Snappers, and kids "you" would not take over the future 4 time national champion TG hurts. IMO it would be better if you just accepted that UT will pass so when it happens, you won't fall apart.

Seriously, it's like watching an old woman nag. Numbers always matter.

Every sane person knows we will not sign everyone we have committed right now and spots will be found for talented players. We didn't sign 8 commits that we had at this time last year.

I agree with this.

Numbers are being discussed because it's June. What else would we talk about?

Doug Mathews said on his radio show this morning that UT will likely have 3-4 current committed players that will not be in this singing class. That is a number based on past history and the fact that Tennessee is in on some very good players that we will get and are not currently committed.

Doug Mathews also said that UT will only take 2 QBs in this class and discussed the nuts and bolts of recruiting, which supports much of what LV, myself, and many others on this site post in regards to recruiting numbers, and recruiting particular positions, such as the QB position.

Doug Matthews said on his radio show, Big Orange Sunday, that UT will sign 24 players in this class. Swafford is the 25th player in this class when it is completed in February. Any extra signees would cause the staff to squeeze an additional player or recruit out of the program. Matthews says that UT will not accept any recruits with questionable character in this class and that the team is not in the position of accepting just any commitment.

Doug Matthews said that we lose on average 3 commitments every year and that this year is likely no different. He said you can usually add another to the list, so we will likely lose 3-4 current commitments from the list of 18 current commitments(6-28-14). Matthews said that the staff knows of the 3 likely prospects who will not be part of the 2015 signing class.

Tennessee’s special team commitments will not be cut loose or gray shirted. They will be part of the 2015 signing class. Doug Pointed out that these special team prospects are elite at their positions and will be an important part of the program for the next 3-4 seasons. That is important to the coaches and the program.

The bottom line is that we have 18 commitments but 3 of those commitments will look elsewhere, so we effectively have 15 commitments with a total of 24 scholarships to give out. Thus, we have 9 spots open.

Tennessee will hold 5 of those scholarships for specific players. They will hold scholarships for Kyle Phillips, Kahlil McKenzie, Van Jefferson, Drew Richmond, and Rico McGraw. Matthews believes that McKenzie, Phillips, and Jefferson will be Vols, but said we are in a good position to land Richmond and McGraw

That leaves 4 spots open. Matthews said that 2 incoming freshmen from our 2014 singing class are being moved to the offensive line and one sophomore defensive lineman is being moved to the offensive line. That eliminates the need to recruit so many additional offensive linemen. The 4 remaining spots are likely to be 2 more linebackers and 2 more cornerbacks. Matthews believes that the linebackers will be Sapp and current Auburn commitment Montaviuus Atkinson and Quarte Sapp. Matthews says that the likely cornerbacks are Cameron Ordway and Justin Martin. Matthews stated that the 2015 recruiting class will likely be finished by the end of the summer.

18 commitments.

Mentioned today by DM that 2-4 could end up elsewhere. The punter and long snapper will sign.

McKenzie
Richmond
Phillips
Jefferson
Sapp
McGraw
Martin
Ordway
Adkinson

Are the names DM said are most likely in play for the remaining spots. I'd think you would have to have at least 1 DT still in the discussion.

DM mentioned a SO DL kid who would be moving to OL. That would mean Lewis, Miller, or O'Brien. I can't see O'Brien being the guy as he's been in the DT talk alot. Both Lewis and Miller would be on the smaller side(About 250lbs) IF their UT roster weight is accurate.

Hearing the class could be done by the end of summer sounds awesome to me. Quicker the staff locks it in, sooner they can really focus on 2016.

Not much changed the last few days IMO. Still looks about the same.

McKenzie
Phillips
Richmond
Sapp
Ordway
Martin or McGraw
Adkinson
Jefferson
Tuttle or Jones

Only one I see as questionable now current commit wise is Woods.

Current Commits:

QB-Dormady
QB-Jennings
RB-Reid
RB-Kamara
WR-Williams
TE-Oliver
OL-Stewart
OL-Jones
OL-Hall
DE-Jackson
DE-Butcher
DT-Picou
LB-Cherry
LB-Smith
S-Griffin
LS-Lovingood
P-Townsend
Slot/CB-Woods
Baller-Bruce

5 spots left at most, 6 IF Woods "issues" are in play.

Probable:

OL-Richmond
DT-McKenzie
LB-Sapp
DE-Phillips
CB-Ordway
WR-Jefferson

Possible:

CB-Martin
DT-Jones
DT-Tuttle
DE-Olenga
DE-Clemons
LB-Simmons
LB-Adkinson
CB-Cole
CB-Brazil

Let The Games Begin!

We're going to withdraw Lovingood's offer if we're seriously still in it for Gibson, Jones and/or Tuttle later this year.

I don't think so. No chance the staff would have taken a LS as early as they did unless they were sure he was a take and on scholarship. If they thought for 1 second he may be let go closer to NSD, they would have waited to take him. It's not like his offer list at the time of his commitment warranted a scholarship offer to keep him from going elsewhere. They took him because they need a LS. Simple as that. Recruiting for needs more so than "*'s".

Chance Hall - let's see - nope, not in the Tux/Matthews prediction posts. Big surprise. Until Richmond commits I am sure they will claim that Hall is insurance in case Richmond doesn't commit. LOL.

They are taking 24-25 counting Swafford. They will be guys that are really good football players that fit Butch's system. End thread.

Matthews has never said Hall would or wouldn't commit. What he said was there are 5 scholarships being held for "plan A" (my words) players ...Ordway, McKenzie, Phillips, Jefferson and Richmond. He also predicted that 3 current verbally committed players would not sign. That would, in his opinion as of last Sunday, leave about 9 spots left to fill, thereby meaning that there would/could be 4 players, like Hall, who he had not mentioned one way or the other. Hall's announcement today in no way discredits what Matthews said last Sunday.

This. We were always taking 4 O-linemen anyways. In the end, we will still get the big fish we want that will give everyone the warm fuzzies.

True. It's also possible guys like Bruce and Woods could be asked to go somewhere else to make room for better players.

IMO Woods yes(he seems to have some issues), Bruce is a Vol Lock. Bruce could have very well been taken to replace Woods. Just have to see how it plays.

Doug Matthews touched on our numbers and broke down where we will likely use the remaining available slots.

Positions of Need – 6 out of 9 are on defensive side of the ball
1. Quarterback . - Doug Matthews stated that he feels even stronger this week about the Vols not signing another QB in this class because he said that he has been told that UT coaches have made the decision to not accept or sign another QB in this class, whether that players is a dual threat QB or a pro-style QB. Jennings and Dormady are their QBs in this class.
2. Cornerback - Matthews said that this is the most pressing need and that we would take 2 corners with the 9 final slots in this class.
3. Linebacker - Matthews said we would take 1-2 more linebackers with the final 9 slots.
4. Defensive Tackle – Matthews said we would take 2 more DTs with the remaining 9 slots.

The OL slots are likely Richmond, Hall, and Jefferson.

20 commitments in house and 5 remaining scholarships to give-and Deavaun Swafford owns one of those.

Where to now?

I would surmise that we are holding spots for Van Jefferson, Cameron Ordway, Phillips, and Richmond. That would take us to 25.

Then we probably add 2-3 more guys and cut ties with two current commitments. In that scenario, we have to be looking to add Quarte Sapp, DJ Jone or Shy Tuttle, and one more Cornerback.

I'm sure I have left someone off and some more names will pop up but how will the numbers work out? I tried to put some names down on who is left on our board. We are in the top 3 for almost all of these recruits. Now is the hard part of recruiting.

RB
Bryce Love

WR
Alvin Harper Jr
Van Jefferson

OL
Drew Richmond
Connor Dyer
Venzell Boulware

Yep...decisions, decisions.

So it's looking like Sapp and Jefferson in July. Ordway in August, and Richmond in September. (24)

Also toss in Ryan Johnson next week for 2016.

Then we are waiting on Phillips. (25)

Just taking those (5) mean we lose at least 1 currently committed. IF any other commitments end up elsewhere, the staff looks to have a lot of options.
