The Numbers Thread

With the numbers ranging between 15-20, I'm guessing that the 2017 class will be really tight. Consequently, CBJ and staff will be really selective in who they choose to let in. If all the QBs stay, it could be that the 2017 class will not have a QB. I never thought I would say that, but the numbers may just not allow that. Off the top of my head, here is a guess at a possible class: QB 0, RB 2/3, OL 3/4, TE 1, WR 3/4, DT 2, DE 2/3, LB 2/3, CB 1/2, S 2/3, ST 0. If Young can't play, then we probably need 3 RBs. The OL mix could be 1OT, 2OGs, and 1 C. It looks like that the staff has a specific body type in mind for the OL, so we could see 1 or more of the 2016 kids end up at OG. That would change up the mix for 2017. Are the 2 OL TN recruits the same long, fast types as well? Given that we only took 1 true S in the 2016 class, I think taking 2 maybe 3 in 2017 makes sense. My spread gets to 20 fairly quickly.

With a big season (especially if we actually win the National Championship), we could also potentially lose Malone, Wolf, Kongbo, Martin, and Kelly to the NFL. I'm not going to speculate on players at the bottom of the depth chart who might transfer or graduate early, but its likely we'll lose a few by August 2017.

So, yes, this class should be large.

Figured I'd bump this since it hasn't been updated after NSD 2016.

From the list I have, here's the scholarship breakdown currently:

TOTAL: 76

QB (4)- Dobbs, Dormady, Jones, Guarantano

RB (3)- Kamara, Kelly, Fils-Aime

OL (13)- Weisman, Sanders (Grad Early/Moving On), Kendrick, Thomas, Robertson, Jones, Hall, Boulware, Richmond, R.Johnson, Tatum, Niehaus, Brooks

WR (8)- J.Smith, George, Malone (50/50 NFL Draft), Jennings, B.Johnson, Callaway, L.Williams, Byrd

TE (4)- Croom, Et.Wolf, J.Johnson, Pope

DE (9)- Vereen, L.Lewis, Barnett, Mixon, Kongbo, Phillips, A.Smith, Taylor, McDaniel(currently suspended and may move on)

DT (8)- Folger, Vickers, A.Johnson, Mosley, McKenzie, Tuttle, Picou, Butcher

LB (11)- Reeves-Maybin, Bynum, McDowell, Jumper, El.Berry, Bates, Bryant, Kirkland, Sapp, Bituli, Blakely

CB (8)- Sutton, Foreman, Martin, Moseley, Henderson, Gaulden, Osborne, Buchanan

S (5)- TKJr, Ev.Berry, Abernathy, Griffin, Warrior

S/T (3)- Medley, Daniel, Lovingood

Taking out the 10 Seniors, + Dobbs, Kamara, & Malone as potential/likely NFL Draft entrees, + Sanders graduating early/moving on, then your scholarship total without more attrition heading into 2017 is currently at 62.

Thanks.
Some posters has said the number we can sign is 27-29. What do you think?

I'll readily admit I have no clue. From what I remember from last class, we didn't have any blueshirts or anything like that counting towards this class, so no worries about the initial 25. From there, if we're able to convince a few to blueshirt, then maybe you hit that 27-29 range.

All I know is we've got 25 current known commits, and VQ apparently says we're too tight on space to take a solid player like TJ Moore, so things will definitely get interesting in the next month and a half as we approach NSD still targeting DB's, DL, & RB's. And watch the official visit lists/in-home visits to get a feel for who is a potential blueshirt candidate.

I think we can count back 1. That would allow us to take 26. The kicker may be a good BS candidate to put us at 27 if the right player wants in. Possibly BS someone like JMac if they feel he can contribute and stave off injuries.

The '18 class seems to be loaded again, so I don't think they would want to eat too much into it. Also, we'll be pushing against the overall 85-limit as is. So, I think 26 unless it's a last-minute no-brainer addition.

I'd think Jalen McKenzie is a PWO option. Pay your way the first two years and go on scholarship without counting against a class once your third year starts (like Colton Jumper). He's a huge injury concern still, and it's not like the McKenzies can't afford it (again, just like the Jumper family).

For the 85, wouldn't be too worried. I'd suspect a few guys will move on to get the returning players under 60, meaning adding 25-29 players shouldn't be too difficult. We'll see about guys like McDaniel returning, or Perry maybe going back on scholly.

Agreed, kicker is probably a BS, and I guess just wait & see who the coaches do and don't visit once the dead period is over. That's usually indicative of who they have talked to or targeted as a BS candidate.

Any insight into any current non-scholarship players begin put on scholarship?

I wouldn't say I have any insight exactly, but there may be a few to watch. It wouldn't happen until late in the summer or in fall camp most likely, when the staff would have an idea of how many empty spots they would have in the 85-man scholly limit. And that only happens if there's more attrition.

With that said, there's a few to keep an eye on-
RS FR WR Vincent Perry
He was a blueshirt from the 2014 class that was ruled academically ineligible this past season and taken off of scholarship. However, he stayed on as a walk on and still practiced with the team. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a scholarship back if the numbers allow and if he keeps his grades in order.
RS SO DT Paul Bain
Heres a rule some may not know regarding walk-ons and scholarships: if you are a walk on and receive a scholly within your first two years of being on that team, then you have to count towards a recruiting class. However, after that 2 years, if that walk-on is given a scholly, then they only count towards the 85-man limit. Perfect example is Colton Jumper, who was a preferred walk-on his first two years, then got a scholly at the start of fall camp this season (his junior year). Bain fits a need at DT, and was apparently in the rotation plans late in the year but got dinged up late this season and couldn't play.
RS FR TE Eli Wolf
Same situation as Bain having been on campus two years, plays a position that needs depth (Croom graduating, Brooks moved to OL, only 1 2017 TE commit).
RS JR OL Thomas Edwards
Just a wildcard pick, but Butch likes to reward guys that stick around til their senior years as walk-ons. He'll be a senior, so if we get under the 85 and have an open spot, there's no harm in putting a senior on scholarship for his last season. The spot opens up again once he graduates, so it's not taking away from a potential recruit.

Hope that helps, and again- all JMO. GBO!

Lets just say 27 just for discussion about who do we take with the final 2 spots without any de-commitments? Butler and Corker seem like the heavy leans to commit.

BTW is there any of our current commits looking around now?

I'd agree, Butler & Corker seem like the 2 top targets to finish this class. If another spot opens up, or they look to take 28 or so, I think the staff is really focused on getting another RB too, though. Etienne, Felix, & Timothy Jordan (WKU commit) seem to be the main targets there.

Just from what has been posted on here & 247, it sounds like Ignont is taking an OV to LSU in Jan, Gray is taking an OV to FSU, Labruzza has been recruited heavily by LSU lately, and Jaquan Henderson has taken OV's to Michigan St, Nebraska & Indiana since committing here back in June. Just a few to watch.

So, it looks like there are 4 potential blue-shirts for the class: Cimaglia, Fant, Calbert, and Bumphus. The rest of our commits have either had an official visit or a coach visit. I'm surprised they would want to use that many spots for next year's class, but it looks like they've reserved that possibilty at least.

That would put our class total possibility at 30 (or 29 depending who you talk to).

I thought you had this all figured out? :)

In terms of official visits and coaching visits (that I've seen), this is the list I've got so far:

QB - Will McBride: OV on Dec 11 (EE, no CV)
RB - Ty Chandler: OV on Jan 13, no CV
RB - Trey Coleman: OV on Jan 13, CV on Jan 18
RB - Timothy Jordan: OV on Jan 20, no CV
WR - Jacquez Jones: OV on Jan 20, CV on Dec 8
WR - Jordan Murphy: OV on Jan 13, no CV
WR - Joshua Palmer: OV on Jan 13, no CV
WR - Princeton Fant: no OV, no CV (BS candidate?)
TE - James Brown: OV on Jan 20, CV on Jan 25
TE - Latrell Bumphus: OV on Jan 27, CV on Jan 22
OL - K'Rojhn Calbert: no OV, no CV (BS candidate?)
OL - Riley Locklear: OV on Dec 10 (EE, no CV)
OL - Trey Smith: OV on Dec 3 (EE, no CV)

DL - Deandre Johnson: OV on Nov 12, CV on Dec 6 (EE)
DL - Eric Crosby: OV on Jan 13, CV on Jan 23
DL - Kivon Bennett: OV on Jan 13, CV on Dec 7
DL - Marquez Bembry: OV on Jan 20, no CV
DL - Matthew Butler: OV on Jan 20, CV on Jan 15
DL - Ryan Thaxton: OV on Jan 13, no CV
LB - Shanon Reid: OV on Nov 12, CV on Dec 6 (EE)
LB - Solon Page III: OV on Jan 20, CV on Dec 10
LB - Will Ignont: OV on Jan 20, CV on Jan 17
CB - Cheyenne Labruzza: OV on Jan 20, CV on Jan 17
CB - Shawn Shamburger: OV on Jan 20, CV on Jan 18
CB - Terrell Bailey: OV on Jan 20, CV on Jan 17
S - Maleik Gray: OV on Jan 13, CV on Jan 19
S - Theo Jackson: OV on Jan 13, no CV

K - Brent Cimaglia: no OV, no CV (BS candidate?)

The only other thing I'd add is to watch coaching visits from here on. For some of the guys that haven't gotten a coaching visit, there's a chance they paid their way on their OV (making it unofficial), which would make them eligible for a blueshirt as well.

Also, if anyone sees an error or changes needed, let me know and I can edit the list. Thanks, and GBO!

So according to my numbers, we can back count 1 and blue shirt 3, which matches what Kristy and RTiB have been saying. If we sign the full 29, then we will expect at least 6 early departures from those already on the team before the first day of classes in August. I don't want to speculate on who those might be, but it should be expected.

Just FWIW, I don't actually see how we can backcount any numbers in this class. At this point I guess we'll just see what happens on Wednesday, but I'll venture to guess that we end up with 28 (with the 3 blueshirts that have been previously discussed). If Ray wants in, I think we say farewell to Jones or Murphy since they made visits.

Gotcha. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I apologize.
