The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Someone asked Rob about the Gonzaga scrimmage.

“I will ask around, wouldn't surprise me, they did it for years when he was at Texas and he and Few are close.”
I know Barnes and Few are friends, so I wasn't shocked by it from that sense. I'm just a little surprised it was mentioned so casually on air and that no one asked about it or heard it.

I love it, although, it's another small knife in the back of our fans who would have preferred a ticket to another home game, even an exhibition, as an opportunity to see our guys in person. Especially the season ticket holders who I'm sure didn't get a discount for the loss of an in-person exhibition.

Had this been pre-NIL I think the outcome would have been different. Extremely ignorant to play an individual the NCAA is telling you is ineligible too. The day that news broke I was with two Memphis donors and season ticket holders...THEY WERE IRATE that PH was playing the kid based on a judge's decision (if Kyle can be considered a legitimate judge SMH) which really had zero jurisdiction over the issue. I have a good friend who was on Tubby Smith's staff and PH staff as well as a holdover. He recently took another position with the university. When I ask his dad why, his reply "You mean you have to ask....it was a train wreck and constant chaos EVERY SINGLE DAY. He'd had enough!"

“There have been some rumblings about the Vols also scrimmaging Gonzaga. That may in fact take place sometime in October but as of now that has not been finalized. It may end up happening, at a neutral location, but as of now it’s not in the books so stay tuned. “

I know it's a highlight practice video, but I saw #44, Jefferson drill a three and dunk 2 handed, easily. Maybe all that preseason talk of DJ being a bust was a little premature. Sometimes, it takes a kid a minute to get used to a new situation, especially if they are away from home for the first time
My thoughts are to never, ever put any weight on anything anyone says about athletes’ capabilities before they’ve stepped on the court in game time situations.

I think Barnes’ reasoning is the pure value having a scrimmage with both these teams is to his team vs. a nobody exhibition matchup that really doesn’t make you better per se.

I definitely agree that a scrimmage against Gonzaga makes infinitely more sense than an exhibition vs Carson-Newman. No argument from me on that. I'm for it.

I wonder if afterwards the coaches have a session and share thoughts about each other’s rosters etc…

Interesting idea. Maybe they do, but I wouldn’t want to do too much sharing with a potential enemy down the road. However, being friends, they just might have a pow wow.

Agree. Just being a Richard. I have high expectations for DJ, in the next couple of years. #44 has the athletic ability and can be a great defender (fastest way on the court for a Barnes coached team) to make some kind of contribution in a few games, this year, imo.

I agree. #44 keeps showing up in these practice videos and I have to think twice before realizing who it is. The guy is intriguing and just might surprise us in a good way, especially since early “reports” suggested otherwise. Aidoo gonna show out this year.

The talent on this team seems like it has every opportunity to be a special group. Every scholarship player looks like they could play and contribute something if needed.

I get why they won’t do it, but it sure would be nice if our Gonzaga scrimmage was televised or put on ESPN+. I’d love to see more of these “pre-season” games available for fans. We have a scrimmage against Michigan State, too? Right? Like, that is an awesome pre-season slate. Fans should be able to watch those.

Yes, we do.

Didn’t we stream a “scrimmage” against Clemson not long ago?

I don’t believe that’s allowed, that’s the whole “secret” thing.

Like I said up front, I get why they don’t televise. I just believe they should change it. You don’t see “secret” pre-season games in professional sports. I think it would be good for fans and also good for the growth of the sport to have more pre-season college basketball games available to watch.

Maybe I’m thinking of another game, but I don’t remember any pre-season game that wasn’t an official exhibition game being televised in recent years. I would be wrong.

Very well could be wrong, but I think i remember we played an away exhibition game where there was some exception for ticket sales for covid relief donations or something. I remember that being discussed in some official capacity but not sure if it actually happened. Am I completely making this up? This is ringing a bell in my head

Or maybe it was hurricane relief or something. Idk I feel like we played an away exhibition in front of fans (untelevised) at some point for a weird reason

U know I love the 🦒 and expect this season to be his breakout one, also

I just don't want to get too close to Gonzaga.
I've heard they carry Gonzorrhea.
And penicillin won't cure it.
