Playing devil’s advocate:

You have to factor in that Sark was probably drunk for a lot of those games so he might be better than his record indicates if he stays sober.

Well he also got handed a loaded USC team that Kiffin had managed to get to 10 wins twice before Sark took over. And that drunken 9 win season was the best of his career, he's only had 1 other 8 win season so far. I think Sark is overrated and him winning with all the talent bought at Texas hasn't changed my mind. We'll see how things go for him there.

Come on, now. Kiffin won 10 games once before Sark took over, and it was in 2011. Sark took over in 2014. Kiffin was 10-8 in between before he was fired on the tarmac in Tempe, AZ. Orgeron and Helton interimed and finished the 2013 season out.

Qualifying someone's accomplishments as a coach because of NIL in today's CFB landscape of paying players, isn't fair. Bama has paid for players long before it was legal, but they aren't minimizing Nick Saban's accomplishments. Now that everyone is doing it, it's leveled the playing field, at least at the P5 level. Coaching is probably as important as it's ever been.

Maybe Sark is overrated. I'm not sure I've seen anyone here banging the table to have Heupel replaced by Steve Sarkisian. We'll see what he's able to do with Texas. That job is about to get much harder when they move to the SEC, so he'll either prove himself, or prove he's much better suited as a coordinator.

It's just amazing what a crap shoot finding a great coach can be. Heupel was good but I don't think he was exactly on the top of anyone's list of hot mid major coaches. And compare that to the guy he replaced at UCF Frost, who was the hottest name in coaching in 2017 and went to Nebraska, another former power that had been through coach after coach looking for "the guy". And he just happened to be one of them.

And here we are, Heupel is the hottest name in college football, UT is back, and Nebraska....just fired Frost for never coming close to turning things around.

If you ask some impatient UCF fans, they were ready to throw in the towel on Heupel, believing he had regressed every year since Frost left. They believed he had won with Frost's players and as they left, the program suffered.

And let’s be honest.

Most of us were skeptical of the hire at first including myself.

However, he’s completely proved everyone wrong and exceeded expectations.

I know everyone wanted a big name coach but Danny White hired someone whom he was comfortable with.

Luckily, it paid off in the end.

Oh I was completely skepitcal. It was mostly due to Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt but I also was like "Man nobody was beating down UCF's door to get Josh Hepuel." The only thing I had going for it was I had accepted he needed a while to dig out what the previous 3 coaches had created so I was going to try my hardest not to get down on him for at least 3 years.

I also compare it to baseball. I'll admit I have followed college baseball a good while but I wasn't "in the know" so I had no idea what the talk was on Vitello. But I know he was a young guy who was an assistant and was inheriting a pretty bleak situation at UT, especially with SEC baseball being arguably a bigger mountain to climb than SEC football. I didn't expect much from TV, and if you had said to me Dave Serrano would be a failure but TV would have UT in the CWS in 2 seasons I would have said you're insane.

If you asked some people here they said that when he was hired. I may have even said that lol.

I agree. It was a pretty prevalent belief on here and was a logical determination if all you did was look at his win/loss record.

But I remember a lone UCF fan saying his last year, they were decimated with injury and he thought JH would be good a UT. I wish I could find it lol.

He definitely felt like the safe hire. A hire of convenience. No one could have predicted this amount of success, this early.
I did, Chris, I did. I predicted 7-6 last year and I predicted 6-0 for the first six games this year. I won’t tell anyone what I’m predicting for the rest of the year, but will reveal my prognostications later in January.

Riley Davis: The Vols could vault up the rankings much like they did in football. Santiago Vescovi, an All-SEC First Teamer, and breakout candidate Zakai Ziegler will captain the offense, while the defense should remain near the top of the country with Josiah-Jordan James back for his senior campaign. Keep an eye on big man Olivier Nkamhoua — last year, the Finnish forward was flourishing as a two-way contributor before an ankle injury derailed his season.

Does anyone know if the university has basketball clinics for high school coaches anymore? Thanks in advance.

Not surprised JJJ has the most impact on our games. ON will jump significantly this year I believe and I hope Key does the same.
JJJ’s challenge always seems to be staying healthy as it seems like all 3 seasons he’s missed games or preseason practice due to nagging injury. Worrisome that he wasn’t in the scrimmage? Hoping he puts together a fully healthy season and creates some draft interest!
