The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

This seems to take away from the only thing we were good at last season - hard nosed, physical defense. We absolutely abused them that game and would not have won with a tight whistle.
I see it exactly the opposite. It was a disservice to that team to say we only beat Duke because the officials swallowed the whistle. Duke was flopping and didn't get rewarded for it while we played sound defense. You'd have thought we mugged Mother Teresa from how the Duke grads reacted post game.

How many games have we lost this year that he has called versus won that he has called? It feels like 50-50 for him and that he reffed 75% of our losses. There might be something to us not playing well when he is the ref even though I think the last few losses he reffed have been pretty fairly called.

I feel like Aidoo especially struggles with tough teams
I'm honestly not sure. But when the whistle does a 180 in games, it's usually him. I believe he reffed at least three of our losses.

Pat is maddening because he's inconsistent. Our first lost to South Carolina was a punch out first half with no calls. We went ahead in the first couple minutes of the second half and we got 5 fouls called on us in under two minutes and 4 were him. South Carolina went back and front and the slugfest resumed.

Pat sucks, but he wasn’t the problem today (not saying that’s what you were suggesting. Just a statement.) With that being said, its baffling how he has lasted this long in the officiating business.

As much as I hate to say it, and I’m usually an optimist 95 percent of the time, I think this team is cooked. We’re so reliant on 2 guys and if they no show then we can’t do anything on Offense. Our depth was thought to be our strong suit early in the year but we literally only have 2-3 guys that we can count on each game. We are very similar to Kansas and it has become glaringly obvious. Again, if I’m wrong then bump this and make me eat it, I pray that I am wrong. If not now, then idk when we will be in a better position on paper.

I'm in the same boat. I want to be positive but felt this too many times before and I am not confident at all our problems get magically fixed in a week. Our only hope is said 2 guys go on a run of a lifetime and the other guys somehow get their **** together.

I know Rucker is a polarizing figure but I agree with him, this team only makes it to the Sweet 16 and for damn sure if they bow out earlier then no one will ever have any reason to take UT seriously based on the regular season again.

And we can talk about how fair it isn't and yada yada yada but the fact is what you do in March defines your success and if we ever want to be taken seriously as a basketball school, we got to start making some deep NCAAT runs consistently. And if this Barnes team can't do it, then we might as well just all accept Barnes will never make it past the S16 here. This team needs to get it together and find a way to play like they've shown they can.

No postgame report, tried to watch it while at work and honestly have no interest in rewatching it lol. We looked like $h!t all the way around, my quick takes are this…

-people are already on edge about March and tourney time, 2 losses in a row isn’t easing any of those concerns heading into the NCAAT.

- make an E8 and nobody cares about that game, winning the SECT would’ve been nice but everyone has been looking towards NCAAT, that’s what counts.

- you aren’t going far if Santi & JJJ continue to give you nothing, they’ve become a liability to the offense. Teams are leaving them alone, doubling Knecht, collapsing on Zeigler and Aidoo and daring those 2 guys to beat them and they look absolutely terrified when the ball hits their hands, it’s hard to watch, not sure the answer and I don’t think you can bench them and reach your ceiling either, but they have to snap out of it. This is it for those guys, go see a shrink or something, but you can’t keep playing like this, would hate to see their careers end this way.

- we struggle against physicality, nothing new to the story, will be something to watch with matchups in the tourney. Aidoo wasn’t great by any stretch, but not to beat a dead horse he wasn’t getting help, same for Knecht and Zeigler. You can’t have 2 guys on the court as a non threat, it makes life hell on the others and just increases the pressure on them as well.

Good analysis and it really does boil down to Santi and JJJ. Without them performing, it makes it tough on everyone. Not sure what’s up with 5th year seniors who have been very productive in the past but if they don’t snap out of it, we probably aren’t going past the Sweet Sixteen. Just the simple facts.

My fear is Santi and JJJ might show up for a game but that's about it, and worst case scenario said game is the first one where we likely need them least. They show up like at UK and we think they light bulb came on and next game, nothing.

JJJ at the 4 is part of the struggle with teams that play physical. He’s not Grant, Admiral, or Pons…all three of them were strong as hell and didn’t backdown from physical play that’s why they were capable of being undersized forwards.

Pons was an elite defender, and the lack of offense was fine.

Grant was a great defender & interior offensive player so he was going to win his matchup on one side of the court almost every game.

Admiral is what you WISH JJJ was doing, when he played a bigger body he would take advantage and attack them on drives. Smaller defenders he could punish shooting over them.

We need JJJ to turn the same switch he did 2 years ago for the SECT.

Auburn did what we should have, they forced the issue and protected the drive.

Only took 19 3s for the game and 5 guys scoring double digits. MSU definitely gonna be a tough out I think, especially if they’re rested.

I can't find the +/- stats on yesterday's game (nor do I really want to see them), but I would guess, based on nothing but a hunch, that Mashack had the best +/- of anyone on the team yesterday. 21 minutes, 10 points on 4-6 shooting including a made 3, 1-1 from the line, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, no turnovers. One small positive in a sea of awful.

Well, at least in 2019 we made a S16. That feels questionable now, sadly.

Yeah, but I mean also Auburn is about to possibly win the SECT and will go into the NCAAT hot. I swear to God if we have another year where the whole season we are the best team in the conference only to exit early while Auburn gets hot and makes the FF, I may just finally give up on us ever getting a break.

Bruce Pearl has made it past the 2nd round once at Auburn. If you didn’t know.

Really gonna check on defensive KenPom ratings after we figure out our bracket. Top 30 defenses with big guards can put us out so definitely hope we don’t face any of those in the first 3 rounds.

Just make it to the 2nd weekend and I think we forget about the loss in the SEC tournament. This group has ability to make a run but we aren’t consistent enough to win a championship.

Knecht has given us so many OMG moments this year it would be a shame to fizzle out in the 1st weekend.
