The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

See my edit, but what does the SECT from 2 years ago have to do with this year's March Madness tournament?

We played horrible today, we're 0-2 right now to end the season...people being concerned about the regular season title being all this team accomplishes are totally valid as of right now.
Yes because sec tournament performance means an early exit in the big tournament…very valid points 😂😂😂

I have always been frustrated by minutes of younger players...

We have 5 Freshmen (RS and True) total minutes played for each:

DJ - 3 (2nd full year on campus)
Cade - 76
Carr - 55
Freddie - 87
JP - 89
310 total combined

Gainey is a first year guy and he played 578 by himself...I just don't get why we don't play the younger and higher rated guys more throughout the season.

Your comment made me think of this quote from Barnes today.

If we’ve done everything we can to try and get JJJ/SV going, but they are still providing nothing, then why play them as much as we do? The simple answer is none of the other freshmen are prepared because we don’t give them minutes.

I seriously hope Barnes doesn’t think “we’ve done all we can” to fix things, because just hoping those two flip a switch that has been off for weeks feels like a tenuous strategy for winning in March.

Seems like that’s the strategy. As much as I love Barnes, he’s had some absolute stinkers coaching in march, maybe just as much as we’ve had bad luck. I hate to say it, but if we go out in whimper because of JJJ and SV’s struggles, the season lies at the feet of the staff for not getting the young guys ready.

Starting to make me wonder if the Junior year bump is just because that's when they finally earn the trust to get on the court, they could be producing more immediately and we just don't see them on the court.

What’s Tenn’s history in march?

I don’t think it’s crazy to think if this team cannot break through under Barnes, what team will?

It’s an issue of probability.

The natural probability of making a final four given our KenPom and seed?

It’s still likely sub 20% and that’s without me crunching the numbers. And that takes into account how good we’ve been all year.

And relatively speaking, those are good odds compared to the vast majority of the field.

But still, 4 out of 5 times you don’t get there.

Well, for better or worse, Barnes is going to be kind of forced to play Sophomores next year. We have 5 of them on the bench.

I want to wait and see if any of the young guys (and we’re really just talking about dillione and Carr positionally) turn into good players next year before I judge it. If neither of those two is a high level contributor early next year, it’s hard to say they would have been much help this year had they gotten more minutes.

I don’t disagree with you. Freddie not being healthy is the “what if” with the guards, imo. If he had developed a little faster and with no injuries, hard to see him not getting some key minutes when Santi is off (every game, at this point).

Carr and Jp will both be great. Freddie may be also

I honestly don't know what point this person is trying to make.
They’re saying that we shouldn’t complain about March losses because we haven’t done anything as a program in March. While I agree that we shouldn’t be canning Barnes over March when we are successful in so many other facets, acting like we can’t discuss it as a deficiency of his career is just ridiculous. I love Barnes and want this team to succeed in the coming weeks - voicing concerns over this team that have been there all year doesn’t mean anything to the contrary.

100%.

As exciting as Carrs flashes have been in his minutes, he was basically just out there chucking. Freddie seemed like he might give us something before the injury but it’s so hard to know what effect that had. ZZ coming back so quickly and Gainey shooting so well early probably also stunted his development a little. Lots of “what ifs”

I also think it's dumb to just act like today is just "oh well". It was a piss poor performance. Sure it might not end up meaning anything but to be like we're overreacting to an absolute turd of a performance is just stupid.

It’s rough out there fellas. We are now going to get upset by a 15 seed next week.

I’m not a regular but respect the forum and the team enough not to overreact and to comment. This was a bad matchup for UT We have struggled all season with physical teams that have a reliable big or two. But we faired well against the number 1 offense in the country who likes to let it rip, ironically the same type of teams that have put us out in the past. Just a theory but I think Barnes has built this team to do just that. Run them off the 3 point line and score points in bunches. We won’t face many if any teams like MS St in the dance. Live to fight another day

At this point, I just feel bad for Barnes. At both Texas and Tennessee, he has had numerous exceptional teams in the regular season. The fact that those teams seem to always flame out in March almost defies probability. Maybe this year will be that season. But this performance just crushed my confidence in this team.

This team seemingly just reads their own press too much - they laid a turd after clinching SEC regular season and then came out here and laid another. They all but said they came out expecting to win and Miss State just lay down. They’ve said it multiple times this year after losses. Maybe them getting torn to shreds by local and national press for the next few days will light a fire and do them some good.
