The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Vandy pretty much collapsed at the end and gave us a shot. We would of won in OT.

Two things stood out to me as why we lost.

#1 - super turnovers. I’ve made up my own word here. It’s not that we had a ton of turnovers. But So many of the turnovers we had were absolutely brutal. ZZ losing the ball on his way to a wide open layup. Bad pass leading to a dunk etc..

Was easily worth a 20 pt swing.

#2 - we let Carey bury us. Guy had an 80% fg double double. Everytime we started to make a run the guy would just get easy points. It can’t happen.

It’s not just his offense. He was just bad today. Rick had to pull him at least 3 separate times because he was careless with the basketball and made lazy turnovers. He also had his worst defensive game by far today. He’s just hurting this team so much right now.
Holy $hit, that’s a hell of a take. He has the highest grade of anyone on our roster per barttorvik, suggesting the team would be better without him is insane.

I guess. Just a frustrating loss. Few teams worse in this league than Vandy. Yeah, it’s a road game, but that’s a very average team. I have no idea how to feel about our squad right now. Zero consistency from game to game in what to expect. Feels like the 2022-2023 squad that ended up a 4-seed and finished 5th in conference in a much worse SEC.

Maybe we can figure it out, but didn’t think we’d get blasted by 30 by Florida and beat by Vandy in the first 5 games of league play. I guess we can kiss repeating as SEC champs goodbye.
That’s a currently projected NCAAT team and a Q1 game, please don’t join the group of overreactive babies that take over the BB forum after a L.

The loss is frustrating as hell and that causes overly dramatic, sometimes completely out of line takes, I get it. However try and use our brains a little bit here, as other have mentioned look around college basketball, damn near every ranked team lost this week. That was a road loss again a projected NCAAT team, a Q1 game, it’s a missed opportunity more than anything, but this isn’t some bad loss to a crap team. In the last 3 years we were 45-3 in games we scored 75+ points, now 45-4, we didn’t lose that game because of offense and anyone suggesting so is quite off base, that was a good enough performance offensively to win you the game, the defense was horrid. Kudos to the Vandy staff as they had a great plan and we couldn’t adjust, it will be a good teaching tool, but there’s no excuse to be outrebounded and out physicaled by a much smaller Vandy team, that can’t happen.

Overall I’m not nearly as down as many are, again I get losing in that fashion to them sucks, but if you can separate that emotion from it it’s different. It wasn’t a game we couldn’t score the ball and everyone shrunk up offensively which is how we’ve lost many in the last couple years, it was getting whipped defensively and on the boards and that’s 2 things that I feel good about this staff correcting. It’s a long season and we’ve maintained 12-6 or better is the goal and that’s still 100% the path they appear to be on, I said go 2-1 every 3 games is the goal and a win back at home against Mississippi State and we’ve now hit that 2-1 twice to start the year.

Sorry, I forgot that it wasn’t allowed to express frustrations with the team. I’ll make sure to get back in line.
If you want to go ahead, I’ve seen you make fun of and point out the over dramatic posters though yourself, didn’t realize you wanted to join that club. By all means go for it, you typically tend to be one of the more level headed posters though.

Well, yesterday was a particularly frustrating loss, so I shared my opinion. I know I have to be careful and use choice words here, but I expressed my frustrations anyway.

I don’t think I said anything that unrealistic though. Vanderbilt is (by metrics) one of the worst teams in the conference. Still a Q1 game, but we shouldn’t have lost it. My frustrations with Chaz aren’t with his offense. For every point he scored, he may have given up as many with his careless turnovers, lack of focus, and poor defense, which happened right after I defended his defense in the “Chaz Lanier Watch Thread” earlier this week. Vanderbilt attacked him when they had the ball anytime he was on the court.

I guess I had unrealistic expectations for the team after the 14-0 start. I knew we’d lose games, but I also didn’t think we’d start 3-2 in conference play during the “easy” portion of our schedule. The season isn’t over, and March is really all that matters, but that performance coupled with the Florida beatdown is enough to at least reset my expectations for our seed ceiling.

The turnovers are just mind boggling. ZZ is great but he is making some turnovers he simply should not be making. That's really my only criticism against him but when he's bad at them, he's bad.

My issue is I think I'm already conceding we're not winning the SEC. Maybe it's too early but I doubt it. And part of my frustration is I think we get waxed at Auburn next week and that's really going to piss me off, the least of which is this place will be a zoo even more than usual after a loss. It also pisses me off that we lose that game yesterday and Auburn has had 2 close calls on the road but have pulled it off and that's probably going to be the difference, and they don't even have their best player.

In a way I guess it's good that this disappoints me compared to 30 years ago hoping we make the NIT, so it's a good problem to have. But the 14-0 start probably also made me a bit unrealistic. We'll still be a solid seed in the NCAAT and hopefully get a good draw and make a run. Lots of basketball left.

Meaning what? We’re still on the 1/2 seed line, not sure how much higher that ceiling could be? I said pre SEC that 12-6 would be a solid record and likely have us still in the 1/2 discussion, again, we are right on track for 12-6.

IMO we won’t lose more than 1 home game.
It’s like this was all discussed preseason, people saying we’d lose games, especially on the road and not to freak out when it happens…we lose and boom, out the window goes any rationale and the freak out ensues.

Meaning how we’ve played has changed my personal opinion of this team’s ceiling. I don’t think we’re a 1/2. Probably closer to a ceiling of a 3/4 by end of the season. We still have 4 road games against Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. Not sure we win any of those at this point based on how we’re playing and our lack of consistency from game to game.

That means we’d have to be perfect at home essentially to meet that 12-6 record and beat both LSU and Oklahoma on the road.

I mean we’ve been perfect at home in multiple seasons under Barnes, and LSU and Oklahoma suck. That’s not a huge hill to climb

This is not directed at mookie, I don’t blame somebody being frustrated after it feels like we pissed a game away we could’ve had. But I do think in general this is spot on. Idk why this fanbase has to have a whole meltdown following Every. Single. Loss. Barnes has been here ten years and people still have to debate whether we should’ve move on from him after every freaking loss. It’s exhausting. And many of those same fans claim at other times they only care about the NCAA tourney!

It's amazing though how thin the line between joy and dread is....if Lanier hits that layup or hits both FTs and we win in OT, we're talking about what a great, gritty come from behind road win that was, and Lanier would be the hero who stepped up and he's "back".

But alas, we suck and Lanier is still in the doghouse (even though his numbers were much better yesterday). I'm also talking to myself here some, though I still think we get stomped next Saturday.

It’s dumb, but Auburn losing yesterday would’ve greatly softened the blow of our loss. If only UGA could have shot better than 40% from the foul line.

I agree, it pisses me off even more that we come up just short and now they've had 2 road games that easily could have been losses (3 if you count Texas' comeback).

If you wanna take us to go 9-9 say so, I think they’re tracking right as expected to a 12-6 ish record…thinking we can’t steal one or thinking that we can’t sweep TBA seems naive to me, but I also don’t see 9-9 on the horizon, if losing 2 road games to NCAAT has you feeling that way so be it.

I haven’t said anywhere we’re going 9-9. I said my opinion has shifted to 11-7 and that I think that’s likely to land us a 3/4 seed. But, I can see that as per usual if my opinion isn’t in lock step with the sunshine and rainbows crew it’s not welcome (not that I think predicting a 3/4 seed is fair to be looped in with the doom and gloom crowd) so I guess I’ll just keep my opinion to myself for now on. Have fun.
