The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

TL;DR. Re-watching the basketball game against UGA and it is amazing how there are three distinct 2nd half runs where an upperclassmen dominates offensively and defensively for several minutes while lifting the play of their teammates to create separation on the scoreboard. While this was happening Igor was consistently helping with his spacing, passing and rebounding everything in or out of his zone. Felix and Cade contributing as well.

Start of 2nd Half: 26-25 UGA

Run 1 - Mashack - Starts at beginning of 2nd half: He gets the sweet behind the back pass from Igor after Shack cuts to the basket. Comes down and should have drawn a charge on Newell but gets called for a weak one against their PG. Then tips the pass immediately after for the steal that gave Lanier a wide open 3 he should have hit. Then he knocks down a 3 after annl inbound and pass from ZZ. Follows with a block from behind on their big, Godfrey which leads to transition where Lanier misses buy Okpara has the putback dunk. 32-26 UT and a timeout around the 16:30 mark. He continues to play tough defense and gets gets another layup around the 15 minute mark.

Run 2 - ZZ - Starts just under 16:00 mark: Zakai's run has too much for me to break down everything he did to affect the game but it started with his inbounds steal and pass to a streaking Gainey after a made bucket. He then was in control of every facet of running the offense to perfection, hitting 3's, penetrating for the shot, foul or dish to get easy points and drawn fouls for our bigs. He was unreal on defense and was in sync with the other defenders to combine for plays that couldn't be made alone. The steals lead to easy transition buckets and limited UGA's shot attempts on offense. ZZ continues to play well until he gets an early rest for the night but the total domination run stops at the 12:26 mark with UT up 51-30.

There is a brief period where UGA went on a 9-0 run and cut the lead to 12 by the 10 minute mark. ZZ went on another offensive run where he drives and scores, then drives and dishes to Okpara and ends it with poking the ball away from UGA right to Gainey for the run out. Back up 14 af 61-47 UT with just over 7 to play.

Run 3 - Gainey - Starts with the combined D with ZZ leading to the run out dunk around the 7 minute mark and he hits several smooth elbow jumpers in stride in the half court and slowing down in transition. He consistently gets to his spot when he wants and is putting constant pressure on ball handlers on D as the game gets later. Gainey also is very good passing or driving in transition this year and we get out and run a couple of times while he is handling the ball. Gainey finishes the game out but the main run is done around the 3:40 mark with UT up 72-52.

There are not a lot of teams that have multiple guys who can take over portions of games on both ends and it's good to see this team have a game like UGA to show our players, fans, media/selection committee and opponents that Lanier is just a piece and doesn't have to do it all. It gives us confidence and takes pressure off of Lanier while keeping defenses from keying on him as much. He should shoot his way out of the slump and did hit a better percentage during the run. The misses he did have were open shots that he should take and mostly looked good.

Just noticed both of our games against Kentucky are on Tuesday nights. Seems like a weird choice. In past seasons they’ve been on the same Saturday night as Duke-UNC.

Maybe because adding OK and TU creates a lot more SEC games to televise. Plus KY without Cal has lost some of its interest for now. And Barn is the new media darling.

With the football season over and conference play starting, I expect a big migration of people who only post in here to be negative. Please somebody do a PSA that the SEC is historically good, that we will lose some games to teams ranked lower than us, and that that doesn’t mean we suck or that Barnes should be fired or whatever
