The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

I had to record the game because I had to run errands with the wife all day. Just finished. Unreal. Lanier has lost it. So over him.
I get it after the missed free throw late, but I can’t be too made at the guy when he should’ve have to carry the whole offense. Jahmai is in his fourth year playing CBB. He needs to learn how not to be a black hole on offense. And Barnes has been coaching longer than those players have been alive; he needs to realize there are scenarios where it’s not appropriate to sit your most important player the rest of the first half, even with two fouls. Not really a bad loss but could’ve easily been a win

It’s not just his offense. He was just bad today. Rick had to pull him at least 3 separate times because he was careless with the basketball and made lazy turnovers. He also had his worst defensive game by far today. He’s just hurting this team so much right now.

Yeah the turnovers were really ugly. But again, he was taking on more than he should’ve bc Zakai was on the bench and Jahmai is lost on offense. If Chaz is allowed to just catch and shoot threes and slash to the rim, rather than trying to run the offense and be the top scorer, then maybe he won’t turn it over so much. And I’ve never expected him to be a great defender. The head of the snake of our defense should’ve been out there and he was needlessly on the bench bc of some archaic coaching

If he fouls one more 3 point shooter I think I'm going to break something. For someone that's so great on defense, it's just inexcusable he keeps doing that, and while you don't want to point to any specific play that 4 point play at the end of the half for Vandy ended up being huge. That's like 5-6 times he's done that this season.

I guess. Just a frustrating loss. Few teams worse in this league than Vandy. Yeah, it’s a road game, but that’s a very average team. I have no idea how to feel about our squad right now. Zero consistency from game to game in what to expect. Feels like the 2022-2023 squad that ended up a 4-seed and finished 5th in conference in a much worse SEC.

Maybe we can figure it out, but didn’t think we’d get blasted by 30 by Florida and beat by Vandy in the first 5 games of league play. I guess we can kiss repeating as SEC champs goodbye.

I agree it’s frustrating, and I don’t think a conference championship repeat is likely. But this loss doesn’t change much for me, we always play poorly in memorial and Vandy is 15-3 (the Florida blowout still worries me though). Almost every Top 25 team is going to end this week with at least one loss, most to teams ranked lower than them or unranked.

All that being said, i feel like this team is missing one true 5 that can bang with physical post players, and a wing that can fill it up from deep. Those roles could’ve been filled, theoretically, with JP Estrella and Cameron Carr. Tough break. (A backup PG would be nice but if we’d just play the great PG we have who didn’t pick up his third foul until under a minute left, that’d prob be fine 😡)

Depth is certainly an issue. That stretch in the first half where we sat Zakai for 7 minutes because of foul trouble killed us. That lineup of Boswell, Gainey, Mashack, Dubar, and Igor (if I remember right) cooked us. I wish Barnes would just trust Zakai and play him with 2 fouls.

This one stings. Feels like 11-7 is where this team is headed.

Yep, it is frustrating, but we are flawed right now and this year conference play is just unforgiving. No easy ones this year as it is a much better conference than last year. Our halfcourt offense is brutal to watch at times especially when we almost exclusively rely on perimeter shots. We only had one post pass today and Okpara scored. With no post offense and at many times an unwillingness to drive the basketball we are very easy to guard. Because we lack depth and athleticism in some spots we don't even try tempo often enough, off turnovers or defensive rebounds for easier buckets. Vandy did a great job of taking advantage of our switching defenses today both off pick and pops and low post offense. Barnes is great but he got outcoached today and I don't think I saw any adjustments coming out of the half as Vandy took that early blow and just extended the lead. When Vandy started sitting on the ball they almost handed the game to us.

I thought we had a higher upside than last year's team because we should have more scoring options and balance. But not so sure any longer as it hasn't come to fruition yet and DK was just a massive difference maker when we needed a bucket. Today we primarily played 6 guys. Philips only had 9 minutes. Dubar only 7 and Boswell got used 2x in only 2 minutes of play. That is a problem and isn't going away because that is all we have. Got to hold serve at home. We're good but we aren't SEC champion caliber good in this improved league.

I agree. 18 games in with an offense that still has a lot of question marks. This shouldn’t be an excuse but bringing in 4 transfers, 3 from mid-majors who aren’t accustomed to the physicality and depth of the league might be a contributor.

Last year, we had a rotation who knew what to expect and how to play to win games in the SEC. With the exception of ZZ, Mashack, and Gainey, the rest of the rotation has had to make the adjustment. Some have adjusted quicker than others.

Well just got to watch, nephew had basketball games today. That hurts, not a bad loss in the sense it kills the resume, but bad when you look at the upcoming schedule. I don’t see this team getting 12 sec wins, no 1 seed in the future this year. Lanier and our offense in general was helped by a weaker out of conference schedule. We’re good for sure, but we aren’t what I was hoping we would be.

Idk, three out of four of those transfers scored at least 16 points today. Mashack, Gainey, Cade Phillips produced almost no points

Thank you for telling the truth about Vandy. Every time we lose a game or play poorly against a low major fans get on here and talk about how great that team is and have them cutting down the nets at the end of the season.

CRB sitting ZZ in the 1H wasn't why we lost. We lost because of how we came out to play the 2H...that was not the same team I have watched play all year. We allowed Vandy to make us very uncomfortable in our offensive sets in general to start the 2H but especially with their on ball D - that can't happen with a perennial All-SEC pt guard and All-American nominee...especially for a prolonged period like we saw for at least the first 8 min to start the 2H. Having said that, we played pretty well offensively shooting an eFG% of 58% despite the slow 2H start and you expect this team to win every time they score in 75 or more...we needed more from our bench this game imo and Jahmai has to find ways to attack the basket more often.

The real issue is what I alluded to with my comment above about expectations to win when scoring 75 points...our D was ineffective throughout the game but was especially atrocious the first 12+ min of the 2H in all facets. It was extremely frustrating to see our backcourt unable to stay in front of the ball and keep Vandy out of the paint. Of course, it was also disappointing to see us not control the boards better on both ends of the court when Vandy didn't have anyone 6' 9" or taller playing against us.
