The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Seeing stuff like this makes me more angry than it really should be. Tennessee has been one of the elite programs in college basketball for a decade. We also generally speaking have some good history in this sport. NC State goes on a YOLO run in the ACC Tournament last year, makes the NCAA, gets to the final four. Then they go back to being dog water the next year and the coach is fired.

Unreal that we have been unable to put it all together while this stuff happens.

This must be the new NIL/freedom to transfer era normal. Proven coaches are now able to avoid the occasional setback since they can recruit and pay experienced players to add annually. I hate seeing this stuff as it’s going to drive Barnes into retirement and it will be really hard to find an Xs and Os coach that has the ability to pull high level players here that aren’t of the same outstanding character we’ve gotten used to.

I doubt that Barnes is interested in compromising and adding great players that are deeply flawed people. Let’s just hope we don’t return to the days of frequent player arrests.

It’s the same thing with Frank Martin.

He led South Carolina to their first Final Four ever but was eventually dismissed in 2022 for failing to make the tournament during his final years.

Would the same posters who continue to bash Barnes tournament resume trade Barnes for Martin or Keatts right now?

Martin I think was more valid. His "final years" was the next 5 years after the FF run and none of thoese teams were particularly close to making the NCAAT and even giving him the Covid year, that team definitely wasn't making it. Yeah it's SC but I Think 5 seasons after a FF of no NCAAT is fair if the expectation is you make the NCAAT at least 1 time in that span.

Keatts to me was surprising. He's made the NCAAT 3 times at NCSU and I'd figure the FF run would buy him at least 2 seasons.

I think it also goes to show a bit, what does it really mean to make a F4? Cool we’ve never done it and can say we now have, but what’s different from never having made an E8 and finally you make it past the S16 to E8 and lose? It’s 1 more round and neither is a championship or even championship game?

My viewpoint is, it depends on your status as a school.

The "blue bloods"/traditionally good basketball schools I think FF is a status and in some cases it's even not that big of a deal if you make one because they've been so much.

Then the small time/mid-major/Cinderella I think is a cool flash in the pan story but otherwise it is nothing more than that. All the random FF teams over the years; George Washington, VCU, Loyola, FAU, nice stories but not a lot of long lasting success.

Then a program like us, where we are closer to the first group than the second. We have been succesful and sustained success but we haven't broken thorugh to that final rung. Auburn did it, Alabama did it, so to me it's actually more important for us to get one because I think it's a final stamp. Obviously an NC is the goal but for me at least making a FF would kind of be the final thing to say we've arrived in the "basketball school" conversation even though obviously we're not one of those in the traditional meaning.

I think at this point most of the casual fans just want a Final Four so they don’t have to listen to all our rivals constantly say “No Final Fours?” anytime you engage with them.

But you are right, it does feel like the meaning of a F4 shouldn’t carry as much weight as it does.

Kinda where I am. I think it carries weight only in the negative sense i.e. "You don't have one". Once you get one I think it's kinda a shrug type thing.

It's kind of like growing up I wanted to be able to dunk on a regulation goal so badly and getting into HS I could grab and hang on the rim but I couldn't palm a ball very well and I couldn't get high enough with 2 hands. By my senior year I could dunk and not easily but pretty consistently. And after I could it was kinda like......ok....hmmm...well that was cool but now what?

Gainey has earned an opportunity somewhere, and with his son graduating, I wouldn’t be shocked if he left this off-season. Just doubt it will be for NC State unless they miss on all their top options. He needs a chance to prove himself anyway.

Just restated a different way

I was wondering how a 28-4 Tennessee team only gets a 2 seed, but the SEC was dire that year. 6 SEC teams made the tournament, Vandy the only other seed better than 8 and they got smoked in the first round by Siena (living in Albany they’re still excited about that one). Torvik had us at #15, considering us overseeded, in spite of reaching #1 ranking that year.

They were going to fire him last year but the FF run triggered a clause in his contract that gave him an automatic one year extension, so the AD’s hands were tied. This year it was back to reality.

A Final Four puts a program in select company and warrants its own banner hanging in the rafters. It’s like making a Super Bowl. Win or lose, you finally made it to the promised land and put your program in select company. If it wasn’t such a big deal people would never talk about it.

Not this year he’s not I don’t think, they just extended him

I think I remember reading Keatts got an automatic extension last year due to a performance clause in his contract.

And they still canned him.

I won’t be surprised either way at this point. I thought UNC was gonna limp into the tourney and he’d survive the season. But now I’m not so sure since that’s very unliekly to happen at this point.

With today's fans it's all about bragging rights, trash talk with friends and co-workers, and on social media. Oh, and the butthurt of losing bets.
