The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

this was not the best shot we've ever had at a FF. this roster overachieved. last year we had a better shot, just ran into the Purdue buzzsaw. the Grant/Admiral team that lost to Purdue in the sweet 16 was the best roster Barnes has had. the team that lost to Loyola on the miracle shot was better than this one. the Pearl team that went 31-5 and got waxed by Louisville in the Sweet 16 was a better team, overall, than this one. and the best roster we've ever had, top to bottom, was in 2000 under Jerry Green when we choked away that Sweet 16 game to North Carolina after having them on the ropes late. and that's before we even get to the Ernie and Bernie years, which are before my time.
2000 was our best shot imo, when we lost to that Inferior UNC team, than, as you said, that 2019 team. Then, that 2007 team that blew the lead to OSU, those were the 3 I really thought had the teams and path. Of course, 2010 was maybe a free throw away.I agree that this wasn't our best shot, but whenever you get this far, it's rough

We keep knocking and knocking at the final 4 door.

As long as Barnes is here, we will get there sooner rather than later

Barnes is the type of coach who may not have the best players but he develops them into great team players that fit his system

I agree with a smidge of pedantic difference.

This team performed well together. The sum of the parts was greater than the individual pieces in a way that’s only rivaled by our team a couple years ago IMO (the team that lost to FAU. That was also a huge overachiever)

I’d argue that this roster isn’t even definitively better than Cuonzo’s final team. I’m inclined to say it isn’t. (Again, the roster talent. Not necessary how the team played )
I like a lot of your statements that you write on here and I tend to agree with a lot of them

Look at this roster. Ziegler, they list him at 5'9 and I doubt he's that tall... 5'7ish?

Lanier, very streaky shooter
Mashack, defensive player
Igor, supposed to be a stretch but was more of a draymond Green type player
Okpara, raw but very good at lobs

This team, when you look at it from paper, is in my opinion a middle of the pack SEC team. Cuonzo's team is a good comparison

This says a lot about Barnes and his ability to coach

Zeigler is definitely 5’9”.

that's fair. I guess a more succinct way of saying what I'm trying to say is that this was not the best roster, or even in the top 5 best rosters, that UT hoops has had. and I think this is one of Barnes' best coaching jobs, especially considering we were expecting to have Estrella and another scorer with Carr. put a different way: even if we'd shot the ball at a good clip and pulled this one out today, we would get absolutely boatraced by Duke in the FF anyway, although I would think that would be easier to swallow than what happened today.

and yeah, I kinda forgot about that last Cuonzo team. J-Rich, Jordy McRae, Stokes, Maymon (albeit not what he once was), that roster is hands down better than this one.
On the surface, I agree. But looking at KP/analytics/efficiency ratings would tell you this is our best of all time (since they’ve been tracking in early 2000s). I personally can’t remember a team with this much scoring ability and length across the board, that could also defend all 5 positions.

I agree. If they’d come out and laid down in the 2H, I’d have a sour taste. They fought their assess off, just couldn’t overcome a horrible shooting start. I love these guys more than any team before them, just hate it so much for them how it ended.

100%, except I don't for a second believe they laid down or played with no effort in the first half like some are saying. They came out absolutely flat, which was my greatest fear after such an emotional win and a short turnaround. None of them used it as an excuse, to their credit, but it was clearly there, and just made worse by the horrific shooting start. They got blitzed by a really good team.

I was going to wait a day before coming on to miss all the butthurt "I'm embarrassed" crap, like it's about anyone but the team and coaches. I couldn't be more proud of this group, and honestly this also might be my favorite team ever. They were shorthanded up front from the start, but brilliant scheming, the leadership of ZZ and Shack, the emergence of Jordan, and the growth of Chaz, Igor, Felix, and D-Stone took this team further than any of us really thought they could get 3-4 months ago.

Just kills me to never be able to see guys like Zakai, Jahmai, and Jordan in UT orange again, but the three of them are among the greatest to ever do it here, and hopefully will be part of the program in the future.

What I said doesn’t mean they weren’t ready to play in the 1H. They got tons of good looks and they just didn’t fall. We looked terrified to play this game, which is doubly disappointing with the senior leadership we have, who have been there before.

Lmao yeah 5’9” ain’t the lie about it height. They’re getting every bit out of that they can to list it 🤣
I’ve stood next to him outside the dressing room after games. Had my picture taken with him, too. I’m a solid 5’11” and he is as close to 2 inches shorter than me as you can get.

Guess it's one of those things with shoes he's 5'9. He's a great player regardless of height and used his height to his advantage. His very fast and big guys had a hard time defending him

I’ve stood next to him and I’m 5’9 and easier have an inch on him. I’ll find the picture if I can. I’d bet my house that if he was measured without shoes in, he’s not 5’9. Most of those guys are an inch or 2shorter than listed height.

Your post got me curious so I looked it up.

The KP gap between us and Houston was greater than the gap between us and Purdue last year or Michigan State in 2010.

And KP isn’t transitive. So you can’t compare absolute totals to judge our teams.

What an absolute loser to tweet this about your former program immediately after they lose a heartbreaker. Would expect nothing less from a Bruce Pearl era player.

It’s sad for him really. Best player from your high school football team who now works at jiffy lube kinda vibes. Still hanging on to past glory.

I still think 2018-19 was the best shot, can't believe that team didn't make an Elite 8...

Weird year, didn't win the SEC regular season, got hammered in SECT title game and then have a rather disappointing NCAA tournament.

I mean they were a 2 seed and only beat Colgate by 7, then blew a 21 point halftime lead to Iowa and had to beat them in OT to advance. Then Ryan Cline absolutely torched them...and that game had to come back to even get it to OT where they ended up losing anyway.

Last year's squad was more talent than this year and that's not a knock on this year's group. And even with Edey and foulfest that game still came down to other players just no showing...DK played his ass off and if anyone else had played to their averages wouldn't have lost by 6.

This year I still feel like the team played above their roster...not just from a talent standpoint but also depth.

9 man roster and 2 of them weren't giving you much off the bench...
