According to Ben McKee, who I’d say knows well more than me, Burns has lost a few on his velo and is missing his spots with some of his breaking balls. It’s not a major indictment because many pitchers, especially freshmen, hit a wall. Give him an extra days rest and it could help rest his arm a little. I wouldn’t mess with Beam. He’s giving you near perfect outings on Sunday.
The velocity is speculative at best, and most likely wrong. Location, location, location. Balls up in the zone can be a killer. He will get it straightened out. I wouldn’t pay any attention to the velocity reports.

He also got his one call wrong on Sunday by calling Lawson out. I'm sure they came up with a fake batter's inference call to suggest that a review wasn't needed.

I would assume that he won't be back for our games again.
The video clearly shows the batter step across the plate. The HP umpire made the correct call. The second base moron clearly missed the call but was bailed out By the call at home.

You don’t start messing with Burns. He hasn’t been that bad. Yes , his last 2 outings haven’t been great but the last thing you do is get in your Friday night guys head…. Personally I think he comes out against Florida and is lights out…. His stuff is to good… with the movement he has , your going to have an issue with location from time to time. Just watch. He’s due a lights out outing. I link the first outing to bad weather and I link the last to the home plate umpire. Sure didn’t help. All of our pitchers where squeezed IMO… Burns May move to the pen when Dollander comes back… This team has the arms and they have been needed. Not many teams could do what the Pen did this weekend … I firmly believe we have 6 guys that could be starters in the SEC…. Burns,Dollander,Beam, Tidwell, Mabry, and Sewell…. I really like Mabry. He and Sewell have logged some great innings for us in the last 2 weeks… pretty much have taken us to the mid-late innings unscathed!!!

And Sechrist, who is a starter.

Just curious where that video is...I didn't see it in the replays right after the play.

He is very hittable for some batters, if he continues to throw fastballs down the middle, he will become more so. Do you at least admit that batters are making more contact lately than earlier in the season?
i have confidence in Joyce but get your point that location is important. Good hitters will crush 102 fastballs down the middle of the plate. Pitching is a lot like real estate....location, location, location.

I wouldn’t say will crush. They are capable of crushing IF they are anticipating the pitch. It would also depend on location, but generally, the velocity of 102 will more often than not favor the pitcher over the hitter.

Agreed. By crush, I just meant that a 102 mph heater that’s barreled up will leave the park faster than a 84 mph fastball with equivalent bat speed. With that said, unless you’re sitting on it, it’s difficult to catch up with a 102mph fastball. We are fortunate to have deep pitching and CFA guiding them.

No I don't think they are making contact greater now. I think his off speed is improving which shows in his K's. Also, I don't think it's fair to compare to the first 13 games or so against the warm up teams. To gain a fair analysis to see if he is next level ready, how do you do against SEC teams. Also, take a look at Jarvis...prime example of some of the outs Joyce gets. They are flyouts to opposite field because they can't catch up to him. They're too late.

So far he has passed the test, small sample but...he's k'd 7 out of 10 SEC batters from Ole Miss, Missouri, & Alabama. But there are more series to come. Perhaps we regroup this conversation in 4 weeks.
I'm not saying he hasn't passed the test, but I don't think he is ready for long outings either. If his stuff was as good as some on here think, we would see him for longer stints than we have. We have yet to see him face the same batter twice in the same game if I recall correctly. I hope in 4 weeks, there is nothing to talk about honestly.

The LVs softball forum ... that's why I don't go there to post anymore.
They don't recognize or respond to you if your not part of their click group.
I love the Vols baseball forum .... they except you into the group w/likes & courtesy response.
It does say in Freak’s description for the baseball forum that this is the place to talk about softball as well.
I vote that you start our own dedicated Tennessee softball thread here.

From the D1 weekly chat. Vandy fan sounds salty.

‘Niels Dore: I know Tennessee is really good, but they are out of control with the antics, and it all stems from Tony Vitello at the top. The chippiness, bat flips, running their mouths, daddy hat and fur coat is just over the top and not good for the game. It all came to a head Friday when Vitello bumped the umpire and was ejected. Should Vitello be suspended for more than 4 games? Should the SEC or Tennessee’s AD make a strong statement to bring (and his team) down several notches?
Kendall Rogers: So, here is the thing about Tennessee. I actually love Vitello’s energy. Tennessee desperately needed that. I also have no issue with some of their antics, but you also can’t be mad when another team does it. For instance, when Alabama celebrated, some Vols players took offense to it and complained about it in the media. If you’re going to prance around the bases after a home run (which i’m fine with), you can’t get mad when someone else dishes it back.’
