The Official #1 Tennessee vs Notre Dame Super Regional Games Thread (Fri 6/10 6PM EST ESPN 2) ( Sat. 6/11 2PM EST ESPN ) (Sun. 6/12 1PM EST ESPN)

I know we have way too many bias umps just hate to see the human element taken out of the game. Maybe we should a review just as we have to include strike zone and check swing . But only like 3 a game right or wrong, games are long enough as is . As much as I enjoy watching over 3 hours for 9 innings starts to get restless.
Well they are bringing the ABS system to AAA and will more than likely be in the majors within 5 years so I suggest everyone start preparing for it because it’s coming sooner or later. This is another reason why I don’t like umpires: the only way MLB got the umpires association to agree to use this technology is if they increased their compensation and retirement benefits. Like come on, you want to be compensated more for being bad at your job? The only reason they are trying to implement this technology is because you can’t call balls/strikes consistently.

Not sure if it has been discussed, but did it appear that ND knew Blade's pitches? When they hit the first HR, watch their reaction in the dugout. The players appeared to have found something that would signal if he was throwing a curve ball. I was discussing this with my son and he noticed it too.

Statement from the ump said Gilbert was warned already and was told direct his comments at his team, not the crew. If that’s true, he got what was coming. Not popular opinion, but that’s how the game works.
Did they ever have a conversation with Tony?

Beyond comprehension that Blade threw three waist high fastballs down the pipe with an 0-2 count. He was two balls ahead on three HR’s. Same pattern each time, FB strike, Change strike, FB in the zone. It had to be a mistake.

It didn’t say they did or didn’t. They warned the player though, so you have to control yourself if you’re warned.
No, they need to have a direct conversation with the head coach instead of a college kid that is running high on emotions. If they didn’t then that makes it even worse that they wouldn’t go over to say something to Tony.

I don’t necessarily agree with that. At some point you have to be responsible for your own actions.

Also, that was the 1st time ND has hit 4 HR's in a game. I think we saw their best, Wilkerson said he didn't believe a player on ND's team would start on the Vols, so hopefully, that game was an aberration.
That is the Lindsey Nelson effect. They had 68 homers coming into the game. If Lindsey Nelson was their home stadium they would probably have had close to a 100.

You don’t think the player is going to accept a message from his coach better than an umpire?

Certainly, yes. I just think it’s college ball not hs. At some point you have to manage yourself. And hey it’s not like Drew is a freshman. He knew the situation and should’ve known better. He let his emotions get the best of him.

To your point, I totally agree Drew wouldn’t have been ejected had they involved Tony. I just don’t think it’s necessary to involve the coach at the collegiate level for a rule you know is in place since little league

Yes, we saw ND’s best offense yesterday. After winning the Statesboro Regional, Coach Jarrett said that ND needed to have more offense in order to play our Vols. And that’s what happened last night. I’ve learned not to make any assumptions about what a team did in its season and how that may translate to postseason. In the postseason, anything can happen. ND is an old, well coached, detail oriented team and they pounced on our pitching mistakes and defensive errors. They gave us their best punch, and while we did our best to counterpunch, we ran out of time in the end.

I suspect that we’ll see their best again today. They will try to do Dolly what Campbell did to him last weekend.I think Campbell gave them the blueprint. However, I’ve a feeling that a Dolly will bounce back today. In the meantime, our lineup will have the figure out how to get to Bertrand and get to him early. Itll be tough since he’s great, but our guys have the ability to do so. They must have great plate discipline and competitive ABs. Take advantage of any ND mistakes. In essence, play better baseball than last night. Go all out and compete.

As awful as that home plate ump was last night, this has not been an isolated occurrence. There have been numerous cases of horrible umps in regionals play last weekend. Heck, one such case cost Michigan the win in its Regionals game against Louisville last weekend. Unfortunately, it happens. What Drew did crossed in the 5th inning crossed the line. He plays with his heart in his sleeve and it has a positive effect most of the time. Last night, it came back to bite him and proved very costly (Coach A’s ejection for stepping out of the dugout. I don’t fault him for wanting to calm Drew down. The coaches knew that Drew had blown his fuse.) These umps will test teams resolve and patience, but what else can the team and coaches do but work through it the best they can.
You're right. It's not an isolated occurrance. Begs the question of competency vs bias. We've been saying it all year. UT is the most hated team in college baseball. We have a reputation and it's well deserved. While we enjoy it, others do not. Constant chirping from the dugouts, on the field antics and the "in your face" attitudes can and will rub some the wrong way. Umpires are not above sending messages or teaching lessons. They're human. I don't know if the guy today was just lousy at his job or sticking it to UT. Some of his facial expressions when his mask was off lead me to think he was sticking it to UT. Like it or not, umpires have the ability to totally take a team out of the game at the plate. You go up there knowing that anything 6" off the plate will be called a strike and you frankly have no chance against a pitcher with that kind of advantage. You're forced to swing at bad pitches. You get frustrated and angry like Gilbert did. As you stated, this isn't the first time we've had this happen with the home plate ump. If it is a bias with this crew, I can't help but imagine more of the same in todays game. It will be like TTU and UK. We'll look like we have no plate discipline and look foolish swinging at balls a foot outside the strike zone. At the end of the day, UT will join the list of #1 seeds/super teams that couldn't make it to Omaha. Feel bad for Gilbert if that was his last game, but given his fire and passion, maybe that's a fitting end to his career in orange? Still a fun season but such a UT way for it to end if it does, in fact, end today.

I agree to a point but if the umps calling it the same for both teams our players have to adjust. We can't go up to the plate hoping the ump does a better job this at bat. These umps have there own strike zone and you have to adjust . Is that fair not really if he's calling strikes off the plate but if it's happening to both teams you have to adjust. GBO !

Were we really getting the low strike calls they were? I remember one that went our way, but I did not feel like it was consistent.

Also, as has been said, this is the guy who made Drew stand back in the box after wearing one on the elbow. Another questionable call, for sure. He willingly got hit by it, but I don’t think he really moved into it.

I feel it’s completely necessary to involve a coach of any team in any sport at any level. Once the competitive juices are flowing, people don’t act like they do walking down the street. If they didn’t involve Tony then the umpires are partly to blame for allowing it to escalate.

I agree that his pitch sequence was odd, but when his throwing hand separates from his glove, I think they knew if it was a curve ball. When he elevated his fastball, they were swinging late when they were unable to recognize it, but by recognizing his hand placement, different story. I could be completely wrong, but my son and I both spoke about it and we both noticed the same thing.
Just my 2 cents

Besides, no matter now. The situation only changed slightly, as we now have to win 2 consecutive games and not 2 of 3

I feel good about today. Oddly, even though it’s win or go home, it feels like less pressure than yesterday. I think the boys will just come out and play today.

Kind of agree. Definitely think if we can jump out on ND at all to start, the pressure of the series suddenly shifts to them in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without a loss in Game 1. Now they’re the team with the “80%” odds (not quite that simple when playing the 1-seed, but still).
