Defensive coaches have always been able to figure out Heupel’s offense. It works b/c running tempo forces all 11 defensive players to also have it figured out. There is normally a player that gets confused which creates an opening. When Vols aren’t running tempo it gives the DCs time to get everyone on the same page with their assignments.

The question is why isn’t Nico running tempo.

While I agree that tempo is helpful however this year many of the defenses the Vols are facing are using a two high safety look and we don’t have the caliber of receivers that can regularly beat man coverage. When the receivers have managed to beat the coverage, the pass is overthrown or dropped.
