The Official #12 Tennessee vs. Georgia Southern Game Thread, 7:00 PM ET, SEC Network

I didn’t catch who he was referring to, but Barnes on his radio show with Bob and Bert said that somebody didn’t deserve their minutes and he was going to keep them on the bench even if it got dicey and needed them back on the court. He said that they need to value the minutes that they are given. He also said that the starters or regulars needed to apologize to the reserves for not putting in much of a second half effort.

I don’t think he named anyone specifically, but was referring to any of the older guys. I think James was probably one of the ones he meant because he never came back in.

I’m done with this crap. WE CANNOT PLAY LIKE THIS AGAINST A GOOD TEAM. This is how a season ends in the NCAA tournament. Crap second halves. Or crap first halves. We’ve had a few of both! This team needs to figure out how to play an entire game. We did against Illinois and my hope is that we will recover from this and be better from it. I’m playing 8 guys the rest of the season unless we have a couple guys step up, but I’m not seeing it right now. Go 8 or 9 deep and don’t EVER freaking take your foot of the gas!!
It wasn’t a good team so we played lots of guys. Relax and enjoy that we are good enough to play 12 players and win by 18. I’m assuming you had money on the game, otherwise why are you so upset.

You said you are done with “this crap”. What does that mean? Are you not going to watch or support the team anymore?

Team playing lots of guys and our regulars not especially giving much effort. It was sloppy in the second half and I knew Barnes was going to be pissed. Aidoo was giving his all. Give him all the credit.

Just a perfect example of what can happen when you lose focus and intensity. Literally any team can make you look bad. At least there was no harm done, and Barnes will have their full attention. They won't play that lackluster again.

Doubt that Barnes has anything good to say about the 2nd half performance. He a Hater?
Nope hes a coach thats literally his job to critique them no matter how good they play. Its not like there was a single moment after tipoff that was a game. Could they have scored 100? Sure, bit truth is there was no meaning to anything that happened after halftime. If anything them playing like crap probably made Barnes happy so he has something to scream at them about. Get ready for 2 more of these.

I had to work late tonight so just got back and watched the tape. A very lackluster and upsetting performance. That 2nd half was more inexcusable than the performance against North Carolina, IMO.

Aidoo looked like the only player that had any energy or care tonight. I get that it’s hard to stay energized against an 0-9 team, but man we let them WHIP us in the 2nd half. Just pure domination by Georgia Southern.

That type of performance gets you handily beat on Saturday. Georgia Southern just wanted it way more. I’m also just surprised that Barnes kind of let it happen. He never called a timeout the entire 2nd half. Just watched as we slept right through the final 20 minutes.

Whatever. Just don’t let it happen again. That was ugly, ugly, ugly.

I’m guessing he made a judgment that he’d rather let it keep going and have more tape to use to motivate them later. It’s not like a win was on the line.

I guess. But I am surprised he didn’t at least call 1 timeout to settle the team down and rip into them. Very uncharacteristic of him to just let poor play go for an entire 20 minutes. He just kind of sat there.

Barnes has conditioned the regulars to push through the poor shooting without calling TOs. There wasn’t a hostile crowd to calm. It’s a teaching moment to have the younger players fight through the dry spells.

I’ve posted it many times. Calling TOs has very little effect on changing game trends. Especially at home. As long as it’s being communicated to the players on the floor what they need to be doing and there isn’t an urgent need to make a substitution, then giving up TOs that might be needed late in a close game isn’t a good strategy. TOs are often needed late when the opponent is denying inbounds passes. Using a TO at that point might prevent a turnover as an inbounds play can be drawn up by using a TO at that point.

Barnes didn't like the way Tennessee approached offense in the second half, saying the Vols were just shooting the ball and "weren't playing with a purpose." They had 12 second-half turnovers, 11 of which were steals by Georgia Southern...The Vols shot 1-for-12 on 3-pointers and were 8-for-28 shooting in the second half. "It is not about making shots," Barnes said. "It's about playing good basketball."

Barnes highlighted a concern that he deemed a major flaw for inconsistent teams. He felt the Vols didn't respect themselves and view the game as a chance to get better. Respecting your opponent is one thing, Barnes said. But having respect for yourself matters. He said that is done by how a player handles the game and takes care of it. That is part of the consistency that Barnes talked about. "We regressed in the second half," Barnes said.

The consistency was missing Tuesday, when it couldn't cost the Vols against likely the worst opponent they will face this season. Barnes didn't get it from the older players. That left him frustrated and with three nonconference games remaining to find it.

Consistency has been an issue for years.

It was a bad second half that I don’t want to see again but I think you’re being harsh.
Really? I think they’re 3rd best in Barnes’s tenure. They’re only behind a team that was #1 in the country most of the season and a team that won the conference tournament. That’s not exactly harsh. I just don’t think they stand up to those teams.

Barnes recognized what went on tonight and was rightfully mad about it.

Tennessee players were disrespectful to the game of basketball and themselves in that second half. Sloppy, playground basketball and they got outscored by 10, out worked on the glass, and outplayed in general by one of the worst teams in NCAA basketball.

I'd guess there were some butt chewings and practice will be a lot harder than normal the next few days.
