The Official 2010 MLB trade rumor thread

The day Mauer moves from behind the plate, his value to the Twins plummets.

How so?

Sure he is a good catcher and calls a good game but a player who has the ability to hit .350 with 20-25 HR's, that is the type of value that doesn't plummet, especially being the hometown hero that he is.

He could move to 1st base and extend his career as an elite hitter, no doubt in my mind that the move will be made at some point.

A catcher that does that is immensely more valuable than a first basemen that does that.

Also, Mauer has gotten close to those stats exactly one time. He is a great catcher. Move him to first base and he is slightly above average offensively.

As a first baseman, he's just one of a bunch of great hitters at his position. As a catcher, he's better than the next guy by a factor of 10. It's one of the advantages that allows Minnesota to stay competitive against the financially flush teams.

I know that his value is higher as a catcher, where right now, he is probably the best catcher in baseball, whereas if he was playing 1st base he is top ten, maybe.

I don't think it really devalues him, if he is able to play at the highest level for another 4 years by moving positions then he may actually add value.

Just a thought.

Couldn't disagree more. If Mauer is moved to first base he immediately becomes one of the most overpaid players in baseball.

Exactly. He goes from being in a class by himself to being just another guy. The Twins already have a guy who, when healthy, is a solid first baseman. Who thinks replacing Morneau with Mauer and Mauer with Catcher X make them better?

makes perfect sense hat, that would be rather dumb for the twins to make a move like that. morneau and mauer are about the only thing making that team go. no team takes a catcher like mauer from behind the plate until he can't effectively play back there anymore.

Why not move him before he can't play the position anymore...let him and Justin switch between 1st and DH.

I understand what is being said by Hat about his value as a catcher vs his value as a 1st baseman.

He is looking at it from a stats and a salary standpoint, I'm looking at it from a longevity standpoint.

I think Mauer would hit even better playing 1st and DH, same for Justin.

Of course to do this, the Twins would have to have a solid option at catcher.

I see where they are coming from, I was just offering a different view.

I'm wondering how the Dodgers have deluded themselves into thinking they are in the race.

It's one thing to have the Yankees ahead of you by 7-1/2 games but when it's the Padres and you have 58 games left to play than I can understand their thinking.

I'm not confident they will win the west but I'm glad they're trying.

Didn't Farnsworth leave a game with arm problems the other day?

I was thinking the same thing. I assume it wasn't a huge issue or worth taking a gamble on. The braves front office dosent seem to be that stupid.

i see what your saying and can understand that. but, what i am getting at is it should be a while if mauer remains healthy, before the twins need to look for another catcher. it is not like the guy has been behind the plate in the majors all that long. this is what his 6th season in the bigs? he is still young and the twins need to get their investment out of him behind the plate as much as they can. first baseman can come and go, but a great catcher is a little tougher to come by. now when he faulters than sure they could look at shopping him or putting him at first. but that should be a ways away from now in terms of time. who knows they may both end up being yankees at some point in the future anyhow.

If we are going to look at the Twins FO, lets look at the Garza/Bartlett for Young trade. Honestly i think it was a great trade for both teams seeing Young is finally getting his sheet together this year. The key to some of these trades between small market teams is finding talented players that you have control over for 4+ years, well done by both organizations..

The Padres aren't the reason they have no shot.
