The Garand shot very well. I can't imagine putting hundreds of rounds a day through one in battle. Those young men were cut from a different cloth.
 
A little help needed, as these are way out of my wheelhouse.

A friend is cleaning out his deceased grandfather's house and I'm trying to assist him. Any leads on what we have here?

the top does kinda look like an old musket was converted to be a bolt action. I know a lot of Civil war muskets were converted to breach loaders, but I haven't seen a bolt action version. the bands were probably added when the wood furniture was cut back to reduce weight.

looking them up you may look towards a Ward Burton or Palmer.

no markings or caliber? Is the barrel rifled?

He's bringing them back Sunday, and I'll get a better look then. They look to be in fairly rough condition, but it might be a cool restoration project, even if just for display purposes.
