The Official #7 Tennessee vs. #1 Kansas Game Thread, 2:30 PM ET, ESPN

We were talking about their defense of the big men.

We played well enough on defense to win both games. Our problem this tournament was knocking down open shots and rebounding. It's really that simple.
Their big men took it to us, we had no answer. Disappointing tournament appearance hopefully they improve

Dude Kansas shot 52%. That's not good defense.
Yes and no.

The fact that our defense forced 15 turnovers (while we only had 6) kept us in the game. We had 19 more shots than them despite being outrebounded by 10. We just didn’t make enough of those shots.

Having said that, when we didn’t turn them over, they were getting what they wanted on offense.

We were 28 points better when he was on the floor against Syracuse. Glad you didn’t mention rebounding and defense. I guess shooting is all you watch.

Some if you guys are just miserable- don’t know why you watch. You must have better things to do.

Everyone is aware of rebounding and defense when it comes to Barnes but at some point you have to be able to score consistently or you can’t win big games. He is called Regular Season Rick for a read

She’s been sleeping through the night for six months or so now, was an issue early on thougu
Good, man. Happy for you, enjoy it and her, they grow up so fast. But, this basketball team is growing up, right now and will be better in March, this year. No shame in losing to #1 and #2 in November, if it pays off in March

We’re about to face arguably the best 3 bigs in the nation in consecutive games. Both Edey and Dickinson are player of the year candidates, and Bacot could be as well. He’s averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds a game. After the next game, we will not see bigs that good the rest of this season, unless we meet any of these guys again in the NCAA tournament.
So they should have a good season, then get bumped early in the tournament?

Sure, that SEC tournament title and two SS’s say so.

Ironically, this is the regular season, so why are upset?

James has had a second terrible offensive game: given us nothing.
James gave us 4 points & 5 rebounds while playing solid defense.

Zeigler and Mashack who are splitting the point scored a combined ZERO and made several weak turnovers. Point was by far our weakest position group in this game.

Also, Knecht and a couple others missed close to 10 bunnies. If you’re not a good rebounding team then you have to make a high percentage of your shots to beat top competition.

Maybe something? We seem to always peak early and fade late season. Maybe we peak at the right time this year with ZZ progression and Knecht and Gainey getting more acclimated to the system.
I still think JJ will come on strong if he stays healthy. I may get blasted, but see he does a lot for this team other then score. I will admit, we need more from him offensively and think he could be a freak if he would drive or pull up. Seems to have a good touch from there.

I missed the Vols taking the L today. Clearly the same terrible offense which is code for underwhelming scorers all over the roster.

Right? For people who love to bleat that the regular season is meaningless they love nothing more to roll around on the ground and cry every time we lose a regular season game
Go to the Ignore button early and often. I do and it’s a lot more enjoyable than getting into a battle of wits with unarmed people. And there are plenty of those on here. Seems like a never ending supply though.

They did not. Quite the opposite, actually.

It was disappointing with respect to missing a lot of open shots and rebounding. If we did either the way we are capable, we win both games easily due to our defense.

I probably should relent and finally do that. I feel like a lot of posts from others won’t make sense though

There’s no way you can say that at this point. There are other reasons that we lost that have nothing to do with the big men that we faced. And we‘ll probably lose some games to teams without a dominant big man.

About the only thing I can say with any degree of certainty is that, despite the losses, Tennessee has a team that should easily make the NCAA tournament (assuming no more injuries). What happens in the tournament is a crapshoot. There are way too many other factors involved, like injuries, matchups, who’s hot and who’s not, etc.

3 games in a row...shooting 35%, 33% and 31% from FG. It really is as simple as that. We need to be able to score more efficiently. We were exposed in post which wasn't surprising given Edey and Dickinson, but both games were within grasp if we make some shots. We had 19 more shot attempts against Kansas and still lost. That is almost unheard of.

If Barnes continues to harp on our defense in the post-game than he isn't aware of the issue. He has to figure out how to get certain players in better positions to score and how to score at a higher rate. We are good and have alot of upside but he has to figure it out. Not playing our depth is a mistake in my opinion, particularly this early in the season.

At least it was good to see Vescovi come out of his funk.

Took the family to a movie so I see there’s no need to bother watching the replay. Just a repeat of last night sounds like. We are what we have been. A team of streaky shooters. One trick pony on offense.

He has said “we can’t continue to miss open looks” after every game. He knows it’s an issue, everyone does. But it’s always been an issue and has never been resolved. I think we just don’t have many good shooters, rather than it being Rick’s offense. We’re open all the time and just miss.

Here's a stat worth noting Purdue & Kansas combined outrebounded us 89 - 67. You're not going to win games getting outrebounded like that especially against Top 10 teams. Barnes has to consider running Aidoo and Awoka at certain spells on the floor together. I missed most of the game today.

Horrible shooting performance... this TN team is the same as the past 3-5yrs... Tons of talent but can't put full games together with shooting the dang ball. I still say it's a mental/self-confidence thing.

If we can figure out how to shoot somewhat consistently, players start gelling, then we can make a deep run come tourney time. Only thing missing on this team is shooting.

We are a solid #12 ranking right now with what we've done and can do...

Should be able to win in the SEC, but it will be tough with KY AU ARK and TAMU.

ZZ gotta make some big changes/improvements or he doesn't need to see near as much playing time. Sorry.

Can't believe as a 5th yr, Vescovi hasn't improved a bit with shooting consistency. Mind-blowing.

Don't let people convince you to ignore people you disagree with. If others want to live in a bubble so be it. What they don't learn is tolerance and diversity of thought. It's something that is plaguing the country in other areas of life. Just because someone complains it shouldn't hurt someone feelings. I call the good and the bad. I didn't see the game, but clearly 60 points tell me the offense or offensive players were bad again.
