The Official #7 Tennessee vs. #13 Maryland Game Thread, 4:30 PM ET, FS1

Refs weren’t missing our free throws or layups.

Agree. I don’t understand why fans blame officiating when his/her team loses or almost loses. Bad calls occur in every sport; however, calls usually go both ways. And it’s easier to second guess watching on TV rather than live action due to speed of game.

The Vols shot poorly, missed fouls shots, struggled against their pressure defense, and played poor defense in the 2nd half. That isn’t officiating.

We got the win so Go Vols!

It’s just a bad product all the way around and has been for quite some time. Just have to deal with it. Joe Lindsey was on the call, so that’s part of it. They just kill me with their inconsistency from half to half and the type of contact they call.

Maryland shot 12% in the first half. That helps.
Yes, it does. But it also helps that we play relentless defense and they had to adjust. Which, btw, they did, very well. Still, a good win on a neutral court (although, in reality, it was a pro Maryland crowd) against a very good team. I'm happy. Do we have things to improve on, very much so. Still, no JJJ, no Aidoo, in a hostile environment, once again, ecstatic

I see Maryland made 2 of 22 for 3 pointers today which is highly impressive because that’s a dreadful performance by a ranked team that is good.

I made it to the game today and Barclays was absolutely a hostile environment. Looked like 80% of the fans were Terps and very vocal. Not an easy venue for the Vols.
They've got a huge alumni base with all their government programs. On the telecast it sounded like the UT fans were making some noise too.

I can explain. In most games where teams are evenly matched, it comes down to a few plays. Referees determine the style of the game as well by what fouls are called. For instance, if a team isn’t a 3 point shooting team, allowing an offensive player to lower his shoulder and bull his way to the goal, then calling a foul on the defender, results in a very physical game. Calling touch fouls on one team and not the other makes players tentative. Players know if they are getting a consistent evenhanded refereeing. After all, it is entertainment. Teddy Valentine was one of the worst. He earned the nickname, TV Teddy for a reason. I would love to hear what Coach Barnes would actually say about officiating when he is “off the record “. Officiating is part of the game and players and coaches adjust to the way the game is being called.

I assume the other games played in this event were in the same arena. If so, the rims and the ball excuse for poor shooting is a little overblown. In the other games shooting percentages seemed to be around average. Winners in the 40s and losers in the 30s. Iona, for example, shot 50% from the field.

It’s only games sponsored by Spalding that use this ball

No team out of 8 shot above 36% from 3 playing in this event, which I think is a good indicator since half shot below 30% with Maryland shooting 8%. Iona and St Bonaventure, for example, probably had a lot of dunks where ball quality didn’t matter because each team had like 20 turnovers. If you just watched the ball, it literally bounced differently

DID NOT SEE 2nd HALF (church), but it was not the long ball draught that caught my attention but the VERY short misses that had me baffled ON BOTH ENDS early on that have me baffled. Any trained eyes out there see the same thing and can offer the answer to the obvious question, or differ with my observation?

Was more contact on shots in the paint than normal part of the deal, leading to even more contact as the teams ADJUST to the whistle as the announcers like to say? If so, did that lead to more mid-range to long range shots. ON and Phillips TO MY MEMORY seemed to miss a bunch and they are on two different ends of the experience meter. They missed a bunch too. Fewer variables at 2-4 feet.

Also 2nd half related, did we really only earn 6 FT in the second half? Seems odd.

Have a hard time checking the replay when I know the ending and the trendlines.

Yes, we shot like dogsh!t. So bad, UT is one of 5 teams out of 162 that have won shooting this bad. Kinda impressive, although unimpressive at the same time. Like Al Davis used to say, "Just win, baby"

That Sunday the Volunteers shot less bad than the Terrapins which were 2 of 22 for threes.

Blaming officials and ESPN for anything negative is a board favorite. I guess it's better than "fahr the coach." Go Vols!

I really wonder, when and why, in the storied history of Tennessee athletics, BVS took such a hold of a significant portion of this fanbase. Eeyore is alive and well -- but I don't know why.

Three main guys Vescovi 2 for 11, Phillips 1 for 10, and Oke 3 for 13 so that is 6 for 34 less than 20 percent yet we still were able to win. Some bigtime shots by Keye, Mashack, and Ziegler saved the day.

We'll have to score more than 56 against Arizona to win, but seriously doubt the three players Vescovi, Phillips, and Oke will go 6 for 34 ever again. To win with them shooting that badly is amazing.
