The Official #8 Tennessee vs. #5 Florida Game Thread, 12:00 PM ET, ESPN

Oof meant Okbara not Dubar.

Yeah if Milicic keeps shooting like that sure, but I think he can be a liability on defense and he doesn't set very good screens. He's a good rebounder but no better than our other bigs.
Only thing holding Okpara’s minutes back is foul trouble. If he stays out of foul trouble, he will probably play 30 a game.

I think this game shows that Gainey is the guy, not Lanier. We have wasted too much time trying to get Lanier a shot, which reduces the clock to 10 sec., and why ZZ is taking so many shots. Spend that time on Gainey because he can shoot the 3, drive and shoot, drive and finish, drive and get fouled. The defense will adjust and Lanier will get his shot. They were forced into it today. What a great game for those guys who played, no one gave them a chance.
Even with Gainey playing well, he shot 5-13 today. Lanier had one of his best SEC games. If this game did anything, it showed that maybe we will function a little better in a more structured offense rather than letting Ziegler run everything on the fly. I do not think this game showed Lanier needs fewer looks in favor of Gainey.

But where were the orange glasses fans when i made these posts?

Easy to call someone out after the game.

Well they were not making unnecessary predictions the other direction. If you choose to pass on utilizing discretion, it is on you PLAIN AND SIMPLE. I was hoping for the best and fearing the worst (any loss) and waiting for the facts to roll in.

This team for sure seems to be one that can beat anybody and lose to a high percentage of D1 teams ON A GIVEN NIGHT. Playing KRESKIN is just stupid with teams like this. STUPID deserves being called out. Those are fan points you can never get back no matter how many games you attend or how many hats you buy.

Kind of like cheating on your wife! Roses and apologies don’t override the facts, even if allowed to stick around.

I commented that we might have won against UK if Ziggler had sat the second half, especially after the 11-0 run at the end of the first half without him. I was assured by some of our "experts" Gainey couldn't have handled PG duty
Gainey handled it fine against Illinois too. I think you may have been onto something. Not saying that we’re better without ZZ but Gainey is a gamer who shows up when the pressure is on.

I'm pretty sure almost every UT fan believed UT would lose today. No ZZ, no Igor, how we played last game, how we played the last time against UF.

It was a reasonable line of thinking b4 the game. Of course, I'm glad I was wrong
Sure it was reasonable to think we might lose. No less reasonable to think we could pull off a close win either. Thinking we would kick there asses being a little less reasonable, but not totally unreasonable. We have some gamers and a great coach

It's a situational thing with Gainey running the point. He's going to have the ball exponentially more than Lanier. He can create shots around the FT extension and high lane that ZZ can't because of his size difference. That also can create more open looks for Lanier in the perimeter when the defense is helping. There's a lot of variations and nuanced differences between Gainey running the offense and Gainey playing wing

Lanier doesn't need fewer looks, its just that we shouldn't primarily be looking for him to be our initial option over and over again in halfcourt. Opposing teams have figured that out and can take it away easily. His handle is poor and hasn't shown much ability to get to the rim. Today, Gainey was often our primary scorer, got into paint often and also facilitated offense. In 2nd half our flow was much better when Lanier was a complementary scorer. Meaning, that at times when Zeigler returns, we can alternate he and Gainey being primary ball handler. Zeigler is still our best PG but can play off the ball more often.

When you need a bucket, Gainey is able to get into the paint and hit a short mid-range and also has some ability to get to the rim, Zeigler's great but his size hurts him when you need a bucket despite his ability to get into the paint because he isn't an efficient scorer from anywhere and teams are taking the lob pass away forcing him to finish. Doesn't mean you hand the keys to Gainey all the time, but when situation merits a bucket, I may look to run offense through him vs Lanier or Zeigler. Whether he shoots or drives and passes out. He's just more versatile than Lanier offensively. Doesn't mean he is the answer to our offensive woes because athletes can bother him, but we look more organized, get into the paint more often and take better shots filtering through him in the halfcourt in my opinion. Lanier is best with clean catch and shoot, shoots off secondary break or in transition when he has space. He isn't going to beat anyone off the dribble 1x1 much and rarely delivers an assist off bounce. When crowded he is not effective. Force teams to worry about other actions, and Lanier may get better looks on opposite side of the floor.

I apologize to Gainey as I have never been that impressed with his overall play. However, today he was excellent.

5/13 (1/5 from 3) for 16 pts with 4 RB, 4 assists, 3 steals, and only 1 TO.

If Gainey continues to improve, Lanier stays on track, and everyone gets healthy, we can cause some noise in March.

We finally saw Lanier get going in the flow of the offense, why choose one or the other? The difference today was something Barnes clearly emphasized, getting into the paint to pressure the interior of the defense, which along with the great defense and transition opportunities created better looks from the perimeter.

You weren't impressed when he won the game for us at Illinois?

Having Gainey as a penetrating, mid range jump shot threat, had everything to do with Lanier getting open looks off of screens

Nationally, it's sort of a "statement" game for our program AND Barnes. We hammered a top 5 team without 2 of our 3 best players. I'm as pumped as I was last year when we destroyed both Bama and UK on their homecourts in Saturday prime time games
Yep. 3 of the 4 losses were to Top 10 teams by a total of 8 points, was it?
Came in here today short-handed against another Top 10 team and avenged the worst loss of the season.
Very, very helpful for the resume and going forward in this season.
