The Official Austin Peay @ Tennessee Game Thread (Tuesday 5/9 6:30PM EST) SEC NETWORK+

the first thing I ALWAYS do after EVERY game, is give him a hug!
We did have a talk on the ride home about not being satisfied and transitioning what you do in practice over into games.
He’s come a long way and this is his first year playing travel ball, do I’m not being very hard on him.
He loves his coach, he’s a really good, young guy and the boys respond and relate to him.

Good for you. Glad all went well. I miss my son and daughter (twins) as they are sophomores in college. It seems like yesterday I was coaching football and basketball. It flew by so quickly.

It is good for me as I can save it for Zander's baseball book. I am not there on Tuesdays to snap a pic.
If you would like a higher resolution photo, just let me know. I post low resolution for faster upload.

Wholesome thread. Enjoyable to read.

A couple things I noticed at the game-

As easy as it is to get on Umps, i'll give those guys credit last night. They managed the dustup well. Honestly hate the AP kid got tossed, but I get it. Game finished clean which says a lot.

Vitello handled it well too. Let the umps discuss, argued his side but seemed to do it in the appropriate way, even barked at a couple guys to knock it off when he came back to the dugout after the meeting.

Also, randomly, I've been over there for so many games the last few years...last night was the first night I realized I'm going to miss this "version' of LNS. The simplicity, the familiarity. Its a reason I appreciate TV so much- he seems like he'll fight every way possible to keep the vibe in there.

Home plate ump was very good last night. And, when he did call a borderline pitch against us, our guys didn't fuss. I'm proud of them!

Slim chance that I may vaguely know that ump. Anyone catch his name?

My thoughts on last night:
I don't think anyone was ejected. They ejected pitcher and Ensley then reinstated both after review, I believe. That is what I was told. I reckon they looked at the video and realized if they ejected anyone they would have to eject multiples on both sides and it did not warrant it. Their bullpen came running in along with every player came out of their dugout. We would have had 5 starters ejected over nothing other than a few words said.
On the pitching, I think V and A were trying to let some young guys figure some things out whether it was work out of trouble or how come I don't get to pitch more? They did what they wanted to accomplish and it did not hurt us, other than a few of you who got real excited over nothing.
On baserunning. I don't think they can make some of you happy. We were aggressive last night and ya'll were mad. We were not aggressive when some thought Ohuna should have gone to third on first play of the game. The coaches can't win. Choosing when to send someone and when to hold them is a guessing game at best. It is a numbers game, betting (don't suspend me for that) on whether the fielders will make perfect throws and catches. When they do, you are hosed. When they don't, you look like a genius.
Finally, I don't have an answer as to why Kirby gets one batter. But he is fine with it, would he want more, you answer that for yourself, but is playing an important role and is getting recognized as a left-handed stopper. And has a few appearances.
Thanks for listening.

A couple days ago, @vol66 profoundly posted that this staff is coaching for the post season. I believe that to be true and I think we saw some of that last night. They know Kirby will be there for us in the biggest moments. Games like last night are a good oportunity to see who else can work out of a jam or come through in the clutch moments.

On the other hand, when I think back to Kirby's long relief in last year's Baylor game, I don't understand why he hasn't been used in that role more often.

19 year old kids run bases like wild men. That happens on all teams including Lady Vols softball. I wasn't good enough to play past age 18 American Legion ball. But, I also ran like wild. It puts pressure on defenses, and I am ok with that. From my view, the seniors show better plate discipline and are wiser base runners. Experience pays off. If I'm the third base coach, I send them!

Thank goodness for Kirby and his rubber arm. Unsure how many appearances he has made, but has to over 30. Going to be big shoes to fill next year. We thank him and the family!

Doesn't always go exactly as planned, but T & F accomplished the big picture last night. We are set up with full availability for weekend tango with Kats.

We're in the NCAA as a road team. We're probably a middle seed in Hoover. So, hope the team can get out there this weekend and just have some fun!

As much as Kirby gives the team physically with his 'sniper'/fireman/etc role right now, i have to think the example he sets pays off even more with some of the new/younger guys.

Every successful sports team, organization, etc i've ever seen had a "just do your job" mentality. Whatever that job is, regardless of size or perceived importance...just do your job and do it well. And that's exactly what he does.

He does it without complaint and is always ready. He and a couple other guys are great with that.

Reminds me of the guys at work you never have to go looking for when you need something. Those dudes are priceless.

Because good coaches play the long game most of the time. When it comes tournament ... You go with the best you got ... No time left to develop players at that time.
