The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

IF & that's a BIG IF, this team can stay within atleast 5 games of the division lead or the WC then the rest of baseball needs to watch out. When fully healthy I have no doubt in my mind that this is the best team in baseball.

Sox hang on 3-2 against the O's tonight. Wakefield was outstanding in his 201st career start at Fenway, passing Roger Clemens for most all-time ever at the Fens.

OTHER TIDBITS FROM/PRIOR TO THE GAME:

+ Injury bug strikes yet again -- Manny Delcarmen to the DL with a strained right forearm. Sox bringing up Robert Manuel, who was recently named an International League All-Star from AAA Pawtucket to replace Delcarmen.

[OOPS, jmoore beat me to the first part of that one]

+ Thought Cash looked good behind the plate tonight (although my MLB Extra Innings was out for about the 3rd-5th inning).

+ J.D. Drew with two solo homeruns and Daniel Nava with the game winning pinch hit RBI (a perfectly placed bloop down the right field line to score Scutaro) in the 8th. Glad to see Nava with the clutch hit after struggling on the recent road trip.

+ With the win, the Sox have now won 500 games against the Baltimore Orioles since their inception in 1954.

Their is something special going on with this team right now, they just keep finding ways to win. Its amazing to watch. I really really hope this team can keep it together until we can get everyone healthy.

Pawtucket did just take down the O's. Patterson, Nava (game winning hit), Hall, McDonald and Cash.

Josh Beckett: Back spasms
Clay Buchholz: Hyperextended left knee

Jeremy Hermida: Broken ribs

This is like having the worst trainers possible in franchise mode on MLB 2K10.

Thought I would pass this along. Dustin Pedroia interview on WEEI from the 30th of June talking injuries, trash and getting revenge on the clubhouse attendant who wouldn't let him into the ballpark in Colorado during the 2007 World Series:

"I was walking out to the same guy and I looked at him and said, 'you might want to get some chest protectors for the fans for the next homestand."'

One more thing. This video is posted within the link above but here is vintage Pedro from the '99 All-Star game at Fenway. Martinez struck out 5 of 6 batters faced and became the first pitcher to strike out the first three (then four) pitchers in the All-Star game:

The Red Sox came out of the AS Break losing their first game to the Rangers 7-2 last night.

Also coming out of the AS Break we had the following on the DL with updates on their status:

Josh Beckett - He'll start for Pawtucket on Saturday in Syracuse. Francona said he expects that will be the last rehab game he needs. If not, it would be no more than one more. Beckett could pitch for the Sox as early as July 22 in Seattle.

Clay Buchholz - He has thrown one inning since June 20. So the Red Sox weren't comfortable with him taking the mound against the Rangers on Friday. Buchholz will start for Pawtucket in Syracuse on Friday instead. If that goes well, he could join the Red Sox rotation as early as Wednesday in Oakland.

Jacoby Ellsbury - He has been working out in Fort Myers for the last two days and done well according to Theo Epstein, going beyond what was expected. The normal progression for a hitting program is two weeks from picking up a bat to getting in games. So in theory, Ellsbury could start a rehab assignment on or about July 27.

But given the twists and turns of his rehab, it would be foolish to hazard a guess whether that will actually be the case.

Jeremy Hermida - Had a rehab assignment with Portland last night & was 2 for 4 with a double and a single. He lined out in his first at-bat then flew to center in his second before collecting two hits. The tentative plan is to DH the first game, play left field on Friday, DH on Saturday and then report back to the team on Sunday to get checked out. Then he would probably play in a few more rehab games before being activated. It'll depend on how he feels and how he's swinging.

Manny Delcarmen - Had a rehab assingment with Portland last night, he faced three hitters in the first inning and retired them all on grounders after throwing first-pitch strikes. He threw nine pitches for Double A Portland in New Britain. One of the guys he retired was Alexi Casilla, who is rehabbing for the Twins. Delcarmen will be activated tomorrow.

Mike Lowell - He rejoined the team last night, they are coming up with a plan for him.

Victor Martinez - Martinez took batting practice today, but in a much more limited capacity. Despite the catcher's injured thumb, Martinez can swing from the left side of the plate, but batting right-handed and catching are still out of play.

"Once we can get that glove on and he can catch, they can rig up a lot of contraptions to take away some of the pressure, but he’s just not there yet," Francona said

Jason Varitek - Had a CT scan done today & was told by doctors the break is not healing fast. He about 4 weeks away from resuming baseball activities.

Dustin Pedrioa - Had a CT scan done today & the test showed alot of healing for Pedrioa and the second basemen has been allowed to shed his crutches and begin putting weight on the broken left foot. Pedroia is still in a walking boot, and probably will be for the next 1-2 weeks, but he will be able to resume several activities that were hampered by the crutches.

According to Francona, Pedroia will be evaluated again in about two weeks, and although Francona said he didn't think it would be "productive" to put an exact timetable on Pedroia's return, he did stress that it was important for Pedroia to understand the limitations of his body.

Jed Lowrie - He is with Pawtucket now & will play a few rehab games with them before being evaluated.

So their you have it, IMO the Sox should get everyone back healthy by mid August. Will it be to late? Who know's, but I think the Sox HAVE to stay within 5 games of the WC until they get everyone back if they wanna have a chance to make a run.

We get the bases loaded and have nobody out and the only reason we score is because Lewis throws a wild pitch...unreal, can't even get a fly ball...I want to see this team get healthy, this is sad.

I've seen that a MILLION times over the past few year's with this team, it's not just the player's we have right now.

Hah, i went through this phase myself this year. Cheer up Bucko, half your team is on the DL and you are still in the race. Just make sure whatever Ortiz is injecting into himself dosent get detected in the next few months and you will be right there in the end.

Well, I posted that a little too drunk last night. I think the Sox can come back, but it's going to be an uphill road. 71 games left (double check me on that). Only 3.5 out of the Wild Card. Same old story... if we be resiliant enough to hang around until we get healthy, we have a legitimate shot. Every game is important from here on out... especially this big 10 game West Coast roadtrip coming up.
