The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Red Sox have re-signed Andrew Miller.

Looks like Ortiz is going to stay in Boston, expect an announcement in the next 48 hours

The FO is likely going to try Bard as a starter in ST.

Mike Aviles has been playing in the OF in winter ball.

Red Sox have signed catcher Kelly Shoppach to a 1 year deal, likely ending Jason Variteks tenure w/ the Red Sox organization.

Sox also signed Matt Albers to a 1 year deal.

You're welcome.

There will be no thanks on the Astros end.

Looks like the former Cardinals dude is working on the inside for them. Trading a good reliever for a couple of sucky players. Good times

Weiland was actually fairly good last year. And Lowrie can hit and play every infield spot if he's healthy.

We aren't rooting for the Astros to fail, big guy. They're just bad.

That's a given. YankeeVol has given crap to the Pacers and now the Astros though. As bad as the Astros are, I assure you Lowrie will not be the best hitter on the team(if he even starts). He'll be 28 by the time the season starts and bats .250. I agree the Astros are awful but someone claiming he will be the best batter on the team is an insult. The Astros are trash but so is Lowrie. Astros aren't going to get better by trading one quality player for two bad players that are similar age. Just saying it must be nice to cheer for multiple teams that buy every player that hits free agency. Not sure it makes winning that exciting when the deck is stacked but to each their own

There isn't a guy on your roster that you can say will ABSOLUTELY be a better hitter than Lowrie. Granted, he's injury prone and seems to be crazy streaky.

I don't dislike the Astros, and Bud Norris is one of my favorite players. Ain't like my team has fared TOO much better in recent years.

I don't think he was meaning to give crap to the 'Stros. I said something in astonishment, and he just responded/agreed.

There are a number of players on the Astros that batted higher than .250.

Houston Astros 2011 Batting / Hitting Statistics - ESPN

Carlos Lee sucks and he batted .275 with 18 home runs. There were other players that batted above that. I'm not thrilled about a 28 year old that batted .250 at the age of 27 in his first real playing time. Last time I saw a guy breakout at that age on the Astros was Morgan Ensberg and Jason Lane. They ended up sucking in the end. They at least had a good season by that point though

Sorry, I just think him saying a .250 hitter in 300 at bats is "probably the best hitter on the team" is kind of an insult. He bashed Josh McRoberts/the pacers too. May not be the best teams in the world but if he's going to bash them, I'm going to point out that we can't all cheer for teams that toss money around.

Lotta guys on that statistics page have a very small sample size, so it'll be interesting to see those numbers after a full year.

I was the one saying he might be the best hitter on the team. He was agreeing. And it wasn't a definitive, end all, no other Astro can have a decent year statement... it was pointing out that he COULD be, and that's not good.

Lowrie had displaced Scutaro as the starting SS last year when he hurt his shoulder. Tried to play through it, but wasn't the same hitter. Throughout career, he's mashed LH pitching, so those boxes in LF could be a boon for him. I'm not trying to sell you that he's the second coming of Mickey Mantle or anything, but don't sell him short. He could be a good player for Houston.

Tim Bogar has been named the bench coach for Valentine.

Jerry Royster will be the 3B coach.

It's also looking like Bob McClure will be the new pitching coach.
