The Official Boston Red Sox Thread

Peter Gammons said today that in his opinion Jose Iglesias needs to start out at AAA & get some more AB's & see more pitches, he did say that if Iglesias was in the Bigs he would be very close to being the best defensive SS in MLB.

Gammons also said that he thinks Doubront will be the 5th starter in the rotation.

If this prediction comes true I think that means Padilla is released and maybe Andrew Miller is long man in the pen. Don't think there is much of a chance that Padilla pitches out of the pen or at Pawtucket.

Doubront is out of options along with Miller correct? If one of Doubront or Miller isn't in the rotation then I think Miller will be cut, can't see them both in the pen unless they clear waivers and go to AAA. Bobby is going to have some decisions come cut time that's for sure

Yes Doubront & Miller are both out of options.

Jose Iglesias has a tight groin & will be held out of games until at least Thursday. So far this Spring Training he is batting 3-10 w/ a Triple.

Aviles passes the eye test for me. I really hope they let the kid start off in the minors and let him get some normal progression. I think Aviles can more than handle SS in the meantime. Can't wait to see this team healthy in the summer, a lot of runs are going to be put on the board again!

I thought Felix Doubront looked very solid through 4 innings against the Yankees tonight. Making himself a case to be the 5th starter.

3 weeks until Opening Day, figured I'd give my opinion on what the rotation & lineup would look like to start the season:

Rotation:

LP: Jon Lester
RP: Josh Beckett
RP: Clay Buchholz
RP: Daniel Bard
LP: Felix Doubront

Lineup:

CF: Jacoby Ellsbury
2B: Dustin Pedroia
1B: Adrian Gonzalez
DH: David Ortiz
3B: Kevin Youkilis
C: Jarrod Saltalamacchia
LF: Cody Ross
SS: Mike Aviles
RF: Ryan Sweeney

Bullpen:

LP: Andrew Miller
RP: Alfredo Aceves
RP: Michael Bowden
RP: Matt Albers
LP: Mark Melancon
RP: Andrew Bailey

*Crawford won't be ready for OD & could likely start out on the DL.

*Franklin Morales will def start out on the DL, he could be a option in the BP once back.

*Dice-K will start out on the DL, he could start pitching rehab games in June

*Jose Iglesias will start out in Triple-A, if he can show some life at the plate then he could be called up ASAP

*Vincente Padilla will start out in Triple-A

I really think the Sox need to put Aceves in the 4th spot & let Bard be the closer. Aceves has looked great so far during ST, he looked great last season too. He has proven he can start & he wouldn't be on a pitch count like Bard would be. Let Bard be the closer like he was suppose to be. I'd feel a lot more comfortable w/ that.

I agree jmoore but I really think that Bard is gonna open up in the rotation at the beginning and Aceves in the pen. I think the reasoning will be because with the beginning of the season schedule the way it is it allows them to bring Bard along slow. This let's Aceves stay in the pen early on to sort of stabilize it. When Dice K comes back he will bump Bard to the pen hopefully or I really think Aceves switches with Bard in the rotation at some point later on.

I'm starting to see a lot more potential with this pitching staff and I think they have some decent options. Aceves is such a bulldog I think he will have a monster year and be in the rotation by the end of it once the other guys, Bailey, Melacon, etc settle into their roles.

Both Dubrount and Aceves had a chance to seperate themselves for the 5th starter spot yesterday, neither impressed. I still think that Dubrount gets it in the end though.

Don't know if any of you guys read Pete Abraham from Boston.com, but here is some stuff he put out today. A lot of good stuff, especially concerning Aviles/Iglesies, Lavarnway and Buchholz, definitely agree with that.

A few more random thoughts from spring training:

* It's wholly unfair to Alfredo Aceves, who deserves a chance to start. But I can't picture how the Red Sox bullpen is good enough without him in it.

* Andrew Bailey will be just fine and perhaps Daniel Bard will evolve into a suitable starting pitcher. But the straight line to success in 2012 would have been to make Bard the closer, a role he had been groomed for and would be excellent at, and use the trade chips to land a No. 4 starter type.

Bard is going to have issues with his pitch count because he gives up a ton of foul balls, an issue that dogged him at times last season. Once a hitter sees him 2-3 times, it could get worse. He needs to find a pitch, probably his two-seam fastball, that can reliably create contract.

Bard is a smart guy and will figure it out. The question is how long that will take.

* That a player is out of options should not necessarily make him a better candidate for the roster. So guys like Andrew Miller, Matt Albers, Felix Doubront and Michael Bowden are so wonderful that it would be preferable to give them a spot they may not deserve rather than expose them to waivers?

The idea is to win games, not stockpile marginal talent. You want players who kick down the door, not sneak in through the back.

That said, Doubront and Bowden do look better and even the confounding Miller showed flashes of perhaps being a helpful reliever. But make them earn it.

* Marco Scutaro is 3 for 23 in Rockies camp. Spring training statistics are meaningless, but it speaks to the bigger picture that far too much was made of the Red Sox giving away a 36-year-old shortstop.

But there is the matter of the $4 million saved in that deal as yet spent. Hopefully that is earmarked for mid-season improvement, not the vault.

* By the time the season is done, bet you Mike Aviles has started 20 games in right field. If Jose Iglesias can't crack the lineup by the All-Star break, they have to start questioning the $8 million they dropped on him. Here's thinking he does and Aviles plays a lot of right.

* Is there some compelling reason Kelly Shoppach is the backup catcher instead of Ryan Lavarnway? Perhaps Lavarnway needs a little polish, but he's a serviceable catcher and a very dangerous hitter.

* Clay Buchholz is the key to the season. If he gives the Sox 180-plus solid innings, they can get away with three good starters and whatever else happens. If he can't, they could be an 85-win team. Buchholz is every bit as talented as Josh Beckett and Jon Lester, maybe more so.

* Bobby Valentine's track record suggests he finds value in players who have been previously overlooked. It'll be interesting to see who those players are. One guess is Jason Repko.

Valentine said today that he feels like Jose Iglesias is ready for the Majors.

Sean McAdams was reporting earlier today that he heard from sources w/in the organization that Bard will go back to the bullpen & be the closer while Doubront & Aceves will be in the rotation.

Pedroia was just hit by a pitch on his left wrist during a spring training game, he looked to be in pain & had to come out. Hopefully it's nothing to serious, would hate to see him miss the start of the season.

I just read that it was a forearm bruise and not the wrist. Hopefully he just needs a day or two off and thats it

Aceves was roughed up in his start today, Doubront looked good once again looks like he will def be the 5th starter.

Lavarnway has been hitting the ball very good this Spring. Valentine really likes him.

3 more knocks for Lavarnway today, he could be a stud in the next few years. Bard not very impressive again gave up 5 runs with a handful of walks but made it thru 6. Too bad they don't really have the depth to let him develop, it isn't hard to picture him being a dominant pitcher in the rotation.

They are saying Bards biggest fauilt is that he only has 2 pitches ( Fastball & Slider ). He has been working on a changeup this Spring Training. He also has some Control issues from time to time.

Lavarnway might end up being a better option at backup catcher than Shoppach.

Well he threw the changeup a lot more yesterday, stat line wasn't too pretty, but Bobby V liked the outing apparently. I think he is in the rotation along with Dubrount barring a colassal failure or injury in the next week or so.

As far as Lavarnway goes, I cannot wait till he is on the roster full time. Way better option than Shoppach IMO he just needs to show that he can handle the staff and call a good game (which I think is obvious from his performance at the end of last Sept)

Here's to hoping that the Tenn boy Bryce Brentz can hit as good as he can hunt!!

By the way, Happy BDay jmoore! Just saw in the recruiting forum, I'll be having an adult beverage in your honor tonight after work hah or better yet during the Sox - Phils game while watching at work on the computer!

Days like this get me so fired up for the season to start! I know its only spring training, but I'd much rather have my guys doing well then struggling heading into the real games

Lester - 7 ip 2 hits 0 runs 0 walks 10 k's
Pedroia - Hit a bomb
Ross the Boss - Hit a bomb
Iglesias - On base 3 times and gunned down a runner at the plate with a nice relay throw

Did you see the "mock" opening day roster on Boston.com?

They projected that Doubront would be the 4 & Bard the 5. I wouldn't mind that at all, & then if Dice-K can come back in June & pitch decent it could allow you to move Bard back to the pen & save his inning count.

They also had Lavarnway on the opening day roster since they had Crawford on the DL. They said CC might not play until late April.

Sidenote: You have no idea how good it feels to finally have someone to talk Sox baseball w/. Living here in East Tennessee I dont' know any Sox fans. It sucks. I'm surrounded by Brave fans
